Stokes and McCullum have got to think about what they want to get out of this game.

They will push for the win but they are against a high class team and they have still got to show some fight and determination to not get beaten if they do find themselves up against it with a few wickets going down.

It will say a lot about the mentality of the team because they are trying to be attacking and win but they also want to prove they are resilient and hard to beat and sometimes you do have to fight for a draw.

England batter Jonny Bairstow, speaking to TMS: "I'm pretty pleased. Obviously they bowled really well last night and credit to them, they applied a lot of pressure and we had to soak it up then try and reverse that and put it back on them this morning.

"Again they bowled well, we'd have liked to have a scored a few more but that's part and parcel of the way we want to play our cricket. We want to play a positive brand of cricket, move the game forward.

"Look if we can nip a few out early tomorrow then, as Ben [Stokes] said at the toss, we'll be looking for a chase, and that's exactly what it'll be.

"Absolutely [we'll chase anything], that's the mentality that we're going in with, we want to win games of cricket. I think if you're just trying to survive on pitches like that then you can get yourself into negative positions, negative mindsets so we'll be looking to chase anything down."

On Virat Kohli chat: "We've played against each other for 10 years now and we've had plenty of battles on the field. That's exactly how it should be. We're fiercely competitive on the field and we'll catch up off it."

Tomorrow will be very different apart from the first hour. India will be a lot more aggressive. They would want to get roughly 200 more runs. For that to happen, its important not to loose a wicket in the first hour and half.

Of course you get some noise from the fielding side. Jonny is an emotional man and he can feed off that, so it definitely got him going.

He mistimed a few but all of a sudden he found his rhythm and he was in the zone.

You have got to be careful with Jonny Bairstow because if you do get him fired up, it's like you wake him up and he gets up and running. It can be his downfall but it can also be the making of him.

It is a high-calibre bowling attack and that was his best hundred so far of the summer.

It was a very well measured innings from Jonny Bairstow.

Yes, we've been talking about how aggressive he's been this summer but I think this innings was very special because of how he paced it.

It was a really really nice innings, best I've seen him bat.

Jonny Bairstow had another good day.

He started patiently before exploding after an altercation with Virat Kohli, where the umpires had to step in and calm it down.

Jonathan Agnew has just suggested that Bairstow started the chuntering with Kohli, rather than the other way round as we all thought at the time.

Regardless it fired Bairstow up and he dragged England past the follow-on mark.

I don't know how Matthew Potts didn't get a wicket today. He will bowl much worse than that and pick up a five-for.

When you look back at when Stokes has played well, he can pull, drive and cut brilliantly but he also has a very good defence.

He doesn't need to play as high-risk as he is because he can be aggressive without doing that and by playing proper shots.

His team needs runs from him. He is a vital part of the batting line-up at six.

It seems like Ben Stokes feels that he has to walk the talk as well and show the rest of the team how to go about this new approach. Maybe he feels that extra pressure to show the team that "this is how I want you to bat". He has to find that balance.

Ben Stokes' innings was again full of action today.

There were fours. There was charging. There were drops. Then, what felt like, the inevitable wicket.

There will be further questions for him about finding a balance between aggression and going too far.

If you look back on Stokes' career he has had a very dramatic time with the bat. He scored bludgeoning hundreds in Perth, at Lord's and in South Africa.

He was very conservative in Australia in the Ashes. I sensed he wanted to play a few more shots and counter-attack.

But he's clearly been given a licence now, but it has bordered on being reckless and he is so much better than that.

He is good enough as a batsman to give himself time to get in and then accelerate. Today he should've thought to himself 'What does my team need from me?'.

Bairstow was playing so well, and he could have played the role that Jadeja played for Pant. He was dropped twice and he did throw his wicket away.

It's a fine line between being aggressive and having intent, and being reckless. He has got so many runs behind him, we have seen him be successful in a more discerning way.

We know he's got the shots but at the moment he just looks to be trying too hard to walk the walk about his new attacking brand of cricket.

Here are the three second-innings wickets that England have picked up so far.

They needed more today realistically. They are behind in this game.

We are supposedly in this new era of Test cricket being exciting but that last hour or so was the worst advert for Test cricket we could possibly have.

The over rate was terrible, the ball-changing was getting in the way, batters not being ready. That was tedious.

It is tricky for the umpires. All the onus can't be on the umpires to keep telling them to get a move on but it is their job.

Pujara had a very long break there for just putting a plaster on his finger. I don't get why that takes so long. The umpires could easily step in there.

Obviously we know the batsmen don't want to face that many balls at the end of the day but a little bit of gamesmanship is required.

Ideally speaking, you should be at around 14 overs an hour. Today, they were nearly two overs short every hour.

It is looking very good for India because the odd ball has done a bit out there, so the England batters will know it's going to get tougher, especially against India's magnificent seamers.

There is so much time left. There is no point in India giving England a sniff. They will want to grind them into the dirt.
