Target 378
Close. So close.
Root gets an inside edge that whizzes past his stumps and runs away for four.
Not convincing, but Root gives the bowler a cheeky grin.

Samuel: As the boss of my team I hereby give myself permission to have TMS on today.

Mohammed Shami looks disappointed. He's just turned, stalked and walked to his fielding position.
Target 378
Oooh, Shami beats Bairstow with a beauty with the last ball.
Still, England are up and running.
Here's the moment - Jasprit Bumrah to bowl his first over.
Somewhere to be, Jonny?
Guided down to third for four more!

That's probably put this ball out of shape! He's absolutely trashed it!
Change of ball? Who cares!
Crunched through the covers for four from Jonny Bairstow.
That was dismissive.
This is what the change of ball produced yesterday ...
Nine deliveries in to the day and we're having a change of ball.
This is just so exhausting.

Piemontemio: There will be some twists yet this morning. England are in a strong position, but 10.30am at an overcast Edgbaston is a different proposition to late afternoon sun and a frazzled bowling attack. India will be on it and a quick wicket will make 378 seem a long way off.

Not a good start from India...
England rattled them yesterday, it was as simple as that.
Bairstow drives into the off-side and is able to come back for a second run after a misfield from Cheteshwar Pujara.
Signs of the pressure already?
Root clips off his pads for the first run of the day and murmurs of "Roooooot" echo around Edgbaston.
118 to go.

I'm surprised by these tactics by India.
It is not the attacking cricket that Deep wanted.
It is not what we expected and I'm sure it's not what England expected. It is a bit surprising.
Mohammed Siraj is going to bowl the first over. His first ball is short, fast and left alone by Joe Root outside off.
No Bumrah? Interesting.
Anyway. We're off!

India will just want to attack today regardless of the approach from the England batters. If they win it in 15 overs then so be.
There will be quite a few sweaty palms in the England changing room this morning.
England's James Anderson on BBC Test Match Special: "It is just a day that is really set up for some entertaining cricket. We are delighted with the position we're in after some tricky days at the start of the game. Getting ourselves back in the game yesterday with the ball and then the way we started with the bat was incredible. We're in a really exciting position. It won't be plain sailing today - it's going to be a challenge against a tough bowling attack.
"We've tried to be aggressive and show intent. At times you have to soak up pressure - India will come hard at us this morning and then find a time to try and put more pressure back on them.
"The journey we've been on so far this has been incredible. We've set quite a few records already. The chases we've had so far has built so much belief in the group. We weren't conscious of the runs we were giving away yesterday because there was so much time left in the game and Brendon and Ben said we'll chase anything on this wicket. Whether we get the chase or not the journey is an amazing thing - we've tried to entertain and that will continue. Regardless of the result there is so many positives we can take forward."
Edgbaston officials are investigating allegations of racist behaviour by members of the crowd during the ongoing Test between England and India.
One account on social media said there was racist abuse directed at India fans in the Eric Hollies stand.
Another stated the "disgusting racism" faced was "some of the worst abuse we've ever experienced at a match".
Edgbaston officials apologised and said they would investigate the matter as soon as possible.
Jonny Bairstow is in the form of his life.
His most recent Test scores: 136, 162, 71* and 66*.
Can bat.
