Lancashire are a further nine points adrift in third place, ahead of Yorkshire and Essex, who shook hands on a draw earlier.

  3. 'That's why he's an international bowler'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Ollie Robinson, consistently in this match, when the chips have been down, has delivered.

That's why he an international bowler and this match takes yet another twist.

Robinson did that the previous time Tom Haines brought him back when he removed the skipper Peter Handscomb.

It's the end of a wonderful innings from Sam Robson. He's given his side a platform - can they go on and complete the victory?

  4. wicket

    Robson lbw b Robinson 149 (Sussex 392 & 335-4 dec v Middlesex 358 & 271-3)

    Big wicket for Sussex.

And it's Ollie Robinson with it, trapping Sam Robson lbw to end a superb innings from the Middlesex opener, just one run short of his 150.

Middlesex need 99 runs to win off 101 balls. Sussex need seven more wickets to win with the visitors a man short due to Robbie White's injury.

  5. MATCH DRAWN AT NEW ROADpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Worcestershire (309 & 262-3, 12 pts) drew with Durham (580-6 dec & 170-1, 16 pts)

Not for the first time in recent seasons, a County Championship game at New Road ended in a drab draw on a dead pitch.

But it was still a great effort by Worcestershire's third-wicket pair Azhar Ali and Jack Haynes who shared a stand of 195 to help see their side home.

Azhar went for 92, the only wicket of the day to fall. But, despite some hostile bowling from Ben Stokes, Haynes went on to reach his maiden century.

In a game of five tons, two of them for Durham's Sean Dickson, the only one of them which will be remembered is Stokes' record-breaking 161 off 88 balls - and his 17 sixes.

  6. Postpublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

Max Holden has joined Sam Robson at the crease and he's already up to 27 off 29 deliveries, with four boundaries.

    Robson unbeaten on 143 - it's 107 runs needed off 18 overs.

  7. In the balance at Hovepublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Sussex 392 & 335-4 dec v Middlesex 358 & 249-2

So, Hove is the only place we might get some late drama.

Middlesex need 121 runs from 21 overs with nine wickets in hand.

It's actually eight wickets as Robbie White is out of the batting line-up injured. Shaheen Afridi was unwell earlier and did not field but we believe he will return to bat if needed.

  8. MATCH DRAWN IN MANCHESTERpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Lancashire (361, 14 pts) drew with Warwickshire (315 & 184-6, 13 pts)

Hands are shaken in Manchester as Lancashire's game with champions Warwickshire ends in a draw.

There was mild concern in the visitors' dressing room when Lancy took three quick wickets before tea - especially as legspinner Matt Parkinson was amongst them.

But Chris Benjamin and Danny Briggs have safely batted it out since tea, with an unbroken stand of 46.

  9. Even Stokes can't find a breakthroughpublished at 17:01 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

Worcestershire 255-1 (chasing 442 to beat Durham)

Ben Stokes is back in the attack at New Road - but even he cannot find a breakthrough.

In fact, he is almost carted for six by Jack Haynes, who carves him for a one-bounce four to move on to 118.

This game is all but over.

  10. ESSEX DRAW WITH YORKSHIREpublished at 16:56 British Summer Time 8 May 2022
    Breaking

    Essex 403 & 167-0 dec drew with Yorkshire 465

It's over in Chelmsford as the two sides shake hands on a draw in a Division One game dominated by the batters.

A memorable day for Sir Alastair Cook as he adds another accolade to his long list by recording two centuries in a first-class game for the first time.

He ends unbeaten on 102, after a first-innings 107, while Nick Browne finishes on 50 not out.

Yorkshire began the day with hopes of perhaps building a big first-innings lead to put the pressure on their hosts but lost their final five wickets for 39 runs and that made a draw virtually inevitable.

  11. wicket

HAMPSHIRE BEAT GLOUCESTERSHIRE BY 87 RUNSpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Hampshire (342 & 204) beat Gloucestershire (179 & 280) by 87 runs

Gloucestershire last man Ajeet Singh-Dale is caught behind off James Fuller - and it's all over in Southampton.

Hampshire have completed their third County Championship win in five games this season to move back within eight points of leaders Surrey at the top of Division One.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Brownepublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Essex 403 & 166-0 v Yorkshire 465

Just moments after Sir Alastair Cook's historic century, Nick Browne moves past the 50 mark for Essex.

He's batted relatively serenely for that half-century, coming from 176 balls.

These sides will shortly be shaking hands on a draw.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Handscomb lbw b Robinson 79 (Sussex 392 & 335-4 dec v Middlesex 358 & 210-2)

Middlesex's mammoth 209 second-wicket stand is ended as Ollie Robinson traps Peter Handscomb lbw for 79.

The visitors need 153 runs to win off 25 overs. Go for it or take the draw?

  14. 100 runs

100 up for Cookpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Essex 403 & 158-0 v Yorkshire 465

    And there it is.

The first time Sir Alastair Cook has registered two centuries in the same first-class match.

He follows up his 107 in Essex's first innings by making 100 from 178 balls - and did so in style with a boundary off the bowling of fellow former England captain Joe Root. Cook will have a wry smile about that.

  15. 'Pretty sure Cook will be aware'published at 16:41 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Paul Newton
    BBC Essex sport

Sir Alastair is pretty good at stage managing these things and if he is to reach his hundred, he's got a quarter of an hour to get the remaining seven runs he needs.

Knowing him, he's pretty good at counting, he's pretty good at knowing what the situation is and he does value his hundreds.

He's batted thoroughly professionally and I'm pretty sure he would be aware he hasn't scored 100 in each innings in the same match before. It's probably the only record box he hasn't ticked.

  16. Postpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Essex 403 & 151-0 v Yorkshire 465

Our always incredibly well-informed BBC radio commentators have corroborated the fact that Sir Alastair Cook has never notched two separate centuries in the same first-class game.

Apparently, he has been removed in the 90s on four occasions when he has registered a century in his other innings.

Cook is on 93 as I type...

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

Mohammad Amir c Donald b Fuller 18 (Gloucestershire 262-9, chasing 368 to win)

Aneurin Donald holds onto a skier to dismiss Mohammad Amir.

James Fuller's introduction into the attack reaps its reward as Amir's patience cracks, he goes after him with an agricultural carve and holes out on the cover boundary.

Nor the ideal shot for the circumstances.

One more wicket. 30 overs to take it as Ajeet Singh-Dale strides out to join Jared Warner.

The pair did put on 55 in the first innings. A repeat of that would make it interesting.

A repeat of Hampshire's second-innings last-wicket stand of 101 from Fuller and Donald would make it even more interesting.

  18. Hampshire being held uppublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

Gloucestershire (260-8) need a further 108 to beat Hampshire

Hampshire had 38 overs to play with as they began the final session of this match.

Six of them have gone now - and still no breakthrough.

Surely just a matter of keeping their patience.

But Gloucestershire's ninth-wicket pair Jared Warner and Mohammad Amir are so far doing a solid job.

Seven bowlers used so far, but, after nine wickets in the match, they're persisting with Mohammad Abbas for now.

  19. GLAMORGAN BEAT LEICS BY SIX WICKETSpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 8 May 2022
    Breaking

    Glamorgan 437 & 153-4 beat Leicestershire 320 & 266

Game over at Sophia Gardens, where Glamorgan have won by six wickets to go top of Division Two by a point from Nottinghamshire.

Victory had appeared a formality when Leicestershire resumed on 158-7 this morning, leading by just 41 runs with three wickets remaining.

However, Ben Mike's excellent 64 kept the hosts honest and frustrated them for much of the morning session.

Eventually set 150 to win, Glamorgan lost four wickets as Callum Parkinson took 3-38, but Sam Northeast's unbeaten 40 guided them comfortably over the winning line.

  20. 100 runs

100 for Robsonpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 8 May 2022

    Sussex 392 & 335-4 dec v Middlesex 358 & 177-1

Are Middlesex thinking of trying to chase this down, then?

Sam Robson brings up his century and is quickly on to 108. His ton came up off 131 balls. Pretty quickfire.

Peter Handscomb alongside him on 58no.

It's 193 more runs to win...
