It's been quite a day of County Championship action - 26 wickets at Chelmsford and 23 at the Ageas Bowl.

The latter could be crucial in the title race as even if Hampshire manage to shrug off being bowled out for 57 and somehow beat Kent, they will only take 19 points from the game.

That plays into the hands of Division One leaders Surrey, who began against Yorkshire with an eight-point lead over their nearest rivals.

Ollie Pope made 136 for Surrey and there were also centuries for Dom Sibley and Tom Abell, plus a magnificent 203 not out in Division Two by Glamorgan's David Lloyd.

We'll be back with you from about 10:00 tomorrow for the second day's play. In one or two games, it might even be the last!

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 20-3

And with that wicket, the players head off.

Kent, batting first, were indebted to the stubborn batting of Ben Compton, who scored 63 off 161 deliveries. Only Joey Evison offered any support as the visitors limped to 165 all-out.

However, a stunning bowling performance then turned things on its head. Matt Quinn starred, taking 6-23 from 6.5 overs as Hampshire were blown away, skittled for 57.

Kent then desperately tried to get to the close unscathed, but after Ben Compton nicked off, two nightwatchmen, Conor McKerr and Harry Podmore, followed him back to the pavilion.

Kent lead by 128 runs heading into day two.

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 20-3

Kent's second nightwatchman follows the first back to the pavilion.

Kyle Abbott nips one back through the gate of Harry Podmore. This game is very much alive.

  5. wicket

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 19-2

Nightwatchman Conor McKerr doesn't last long, and Mohammad Abbas has a second.

Hampshire couldn't win from here could they?

  6. wicket

WICKET Compton c Vince b Abbaspublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 19-1

Ben Compton falls with just 11 deliveries left in the day.

It's classic Mohammad Abbas, working away in that fourth stump channel, and he finds the outside edge.

James Vince makes no mistake at first slip.

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 12-0

    Keith BarkerImage source, Rex Features

Keith Barker beats Tawanda Muyeye's outside edge, which prompts Ben Compton to go have a word with his opening partner.

The rest of the over goes by without incident. Kent lead by 120.

  8. Lloyd leads run feast in Cardiffpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Glamorgan 380-3 v Derbys

Today has been dominated by the blade of Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd, who leaves the middle on 203 not out, his highest score in First Class cricket.

Billy Root plays out the last over, bowled by Alex Thomson with a forward defensive block. He survives unbeaten on 77. Thomson has toiled for 28 overs for 1-97.

Maximum batting points are in sight. How long will they bat on tomorrow?

  9. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex 107 v Lancs 131 & 25-6

That is that at Chelmsford - just the 26 wickets in the day...

Lancashire were bundled out for 131 in their first innings, with Simon Harmer superb, taking 5-41.

In reply, only Alastair Cook showed any resistance for Essex on a pitch that took significant turn and went increasingly up and down.

Lancashire then collapsed to 7-6 in a crazy half hour during which Shane Snater took three wickets in four balls.

George Bell finishes with 18 off 17 balls - he's dealt well with the chaos on his first-class debut.

  10. Close of play at Grace Roadpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Leics v Middx 293-8

Middlesex are perhaps slightly the happier of the two sides as Ethan Bamber defends against Leicester skipper Callum Parkinson with fielders crowded around the bat.

A huge appeal for LBW is turned down off the fourth ball. Just outside the line. Just.

A hard-fought day for both teams at Grace Road, where the momentum has shifted several times.

Earlier, John Simpson fell just short of an 11th First Class century, caught by off a miscued pull by Sol Budinger off Mike Finan for 92.

Finan finishes with 3-54 in 17 overs.

  11. Postpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Hampshire 57 v Kent 165 & 1-0

Two tidy overs from Keith Barker and then Kyle Abbott, but the Kent openers come through them unscathed.

  12. Close of play at Tauntonpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Somerset 271-4 v Northamptonshire

A single to James Rew off Tom Taylor ends a competitive first day's play at Taunton.

Scoring was slow in the morning, thanks to some tight Northants bowling, but a stand of 134 between Tom Abell and George Bartlett put the home side in a good position.

Abell made 111 - his fourth Championship century of the campaign - before being run out, while Bartlett made 62.

  13. Postpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex 107 v Lancs 131 & 12-6

Seam had gone for six runs since the last wicket fell, so it's clearly time for a bit of spin at Chelmsford.

    Simon Harmer into the attack...

  14. Close of play at the Riversidepublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Durham 54-1 v Sussex 162

No resumption after the umpires took the players off because of the light.

Durham are on top against a youthful Sussex side, who lost Henry Crocombe with a suspected dislocated shoulder after diving to try and prevent a boundary.

Ali Orr's 36 was the highest score in Sussex's first innings, while Matthew Potts' 3-53 took him past 50 Championship wickets for the season.

  15. wicket

WICKET Balderson b Snater 3published at 17:43 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Essex 107 v Lancs 131 & 7-6

Shane Snater knocks back George Balderson's off stump - Balderson had raced to the high score of three in this innings.

Snater has 4-6 in three overs.

  16. 200 runs

for David Lloydpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Glamorgan 371-3 v Derbyshire

Fantastic knock by David Lloyd, who carves a ball from Sam Conners square for two to reach 200 off 265 balls.

His innings has included a six and 30 fours and he has so far put on 188 with Billy Root, who has 70.

  17. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Surrey 292-6 v Yorkshire

No resumption possible since they went off for bad light at about 16:45 at the Micky Stewart Oval.

Yorkshire made a decent start, reducing the Division One leaders to 136-5 in the 42nd but a brilliant innings by Ollie Pope has given Surrey the edge.

He hit 136 off 131 balls before being bowled by Steve Patterson (4-52) and shared a 142-run partnership with Jordan Clark, who will resume on 55 not out.

  18. Close of play at New Roadpublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 September 2022

    Worcs 297-7 v Notts

This has been a vital knock from Roderick, who will hope for a chance to get to his century early tomorrow morning.

He picks up a single from the fourth ball of Paterson's over with a drive into the off side to move to 91.

He came into the middle with the Pears on 99-5!

Tongue is beaten driving outside off stump but survives the over and even takes the strike first up tomorrow with a single off the last ball.

A fine recovery for the Pears after being comprehensively outplayed this morning.

Matt Quinn finishes with the ridiculous figures of 6-23.
