He returns plays out the rest of the over defensively.
Roderick moves to 42 with a back foot cut for one off Patterson-White - and D'Oliveira goes down the track and launches the bowler straight down the ground for four.
Cut away for four more to bring up the century partnership.
Essex 64-4 v Lancashire 131 - tea

It is fair to say that this Chelmsford surface is one that goes firmly into the result wicket category. But, like the Essex v Hampshire classic in June, the game itself is shaping into a riveting contest.
On that occasion the key was for the batting side to get through to the older ball. It will be interesting to see if things get easier for Essex should they manage to bat into tomorrow.
That will be a challenge against a Lancashire’s seam attack that has dominated as Essex’s did earlier, Will Williams looking particularly impressive. Then there’s Matt Parkinson who has just come on and will be hoping to benefit from the turn and bounce that brought Simon Harmer 5-41 earlier.
Maybe Alastair Cook, who has fought his way to 24 at tea, might prove the difference.
Surrey 246-5 v Yorkshire
Ollie Pope strokes a single off Dom Bess to end a dominant afternoon session by Surrey.
They have added 164 for the loss of Ben Foakes and Cameron Steel, with Pope and Jordan Clark sharing an unbroken stand of 110.
The Division One leaders are nearing a second batting point and they need every one, with title rivals Hampshire having achieved all three with the ball against Kent.

Hampshire v Kent 156-9
Conor McKerr and Nathan Gilchrist have made Hampshire work for their ninth wicket, but Mohammad Abbas makes the breakthrough.
McKerr can count himself a little bit unlucky there. It looks like it could be sliding past leg stump.
Gloucs v Warwks 169-6
Two singles and a no ball come from David Payne's over.
Ajeet Singh Dale will bowl from the Ashley Down Road End.
Worryingly, he's taking a bit of time to get through this over as he pauses to stretch out a hamstring.
Just the one run from the over.
Essex 64-4 v Lancs 131
Alastair Cook and Feroze Khushi make it through to tea, seeing off Tom Hartley with relative ease.
Essex trail by 67 - Cook has 24, Khushi 17.

Surrey 233-5 v Yorks
Yorkshire summon Steve Patterson, their most successful bowler in this innings, for a pre-tea burst.
A magnificent cover drive by Ollie Pope brings him another boundary and he flicks the final delivery to leg and comes back for a third run to move to 116 not out.
Essex 58-4 v Lancs 131
First sight of spin in this second innings as Matt Parkinson comes on to bowl.
Feroze Khushi greets him with a flashing drive that races to the cover boundary.
Gloucs v Warwks 164-6
A good day overall for Gloucestershire, who have six wickets to date and will be confident of restricting Warwickshire to under 250 if they can dislodge Dom Sibley.
The over rate has been very good. 66 bowled so far.
David Payne will bowl the 67th from the Pavilion End.
Surrey 226-5 v Yorks
If Yorkshire were hoping that Dom Bess could slow the Surrey scoring rate, it isn't working at the moment.
Ollie Pope late cuts for four at the start of his latest over, which ends with a low full toss, which Jordan Clark puts away through the covers for another boundary.
Worcestershire 187-5 v Nottinghamshire - tea
Dave Bracegirdle
BBC Radio Nottingham commentator
Worcestershire enjoyed the better of the afternoon session at New Road, with Brett D’Oliveira and Gareth Roderick batting throughout the two-hour period.
Resuming on 99-5, the home pair resisted everything that Nottinghamshire threw at them with captain D’Oliveira reaching his 50 from 141 deliveries, with seven fours.
The in-from Roderick has stroked five boundaries in his unbeaten 41, with the partnership now worth 88.
Somerset 163-2 v Northants
They've had to work very hard but Somerset now have the platform for a substantial first-innings total against Northants.
Tom Abell punches Rob Keogh away square for four in the final over before tea and is 59 not out, with George Bartlett on 37.
Together they have added 91 since the downfall of Tom Lammonby.
Surrey 214-5 v Yorkshire
Dom Bess gives one a bit more air and Jordan Clark is able to clout it away through the covers for four. He is 21 not out and Ollie Pope has 102.
Quote MessageLooking ominous from Yorkshire's point of view at the moment - they would have anted to bowl better than this on winning the toss."

Essex 48-4 v Lancs 131
Alastair Cook plays and misses at Tom Bailey outside off. The Lancashire slips oo and ah, but the great man is still there.
He has 17, whilst Feroze Khushi has moved to 12 with a textbook cover drive.
Somerset 157-2 v Northants
A single off Rob Keogh takes Somerset skipper Tom Abell to 50 from 100 deliveries.
He is fortunate at the start of the next over, bowled by Ben Sanderson, as he edges between first and second slip for four.
Being fair to them, it's possible that might not have carried.
