One of the most famous wins in Lancashire’s history. The turning point today was undoubtedly George Balderson’s hat-trick that included both Alastair Cook and Dan Lawrence.

Even with only 70 runs left to get it was a shattering blow on a pitch that continued to provide plenty of assistance to an impressive Lancashire attack.

Balderson finished with 5-14 and Will Williams finished the job with four wickets including Essex captain Tom Westley, ninth out for 13.

The biggest priority for Essex next season will be producing home pitches that offer a consistent balance between bat and ball. They managed that in 2019 when they last won the Championship.

Two wins from seven home games will never be enough to sustain a Championship challenge in such a competitive division.

Here's the latest from Cardiff and Chester-le-Street...

Glamorgan have declared on a mammoth 550-5 at Cardiff, where David Lloyd scored a magnificent career-best 313 not out.

Only Sam Northeast has ever scored more in an innings for the county.

    Derbyshire are 22-1 in reply.

Billy Godleman was caught by Ajaz Patel off the bowling of Michael Hogan for no score.

Durham are 119 ahead of Sussex at Chester-le-Street on 281-3.

Michael Jones fell just short of a century, caught behind off the bowling of James Coles for 96.

    Somerset 389 v Northants 29-3

Josh Cobb doesn't fancy a lifting a rising ball from Craig Overton, turning his head away as he jabs a catch to George Bartlett, who is stationed at short leg. Bowling to a plan - looks like it.

Two more boundaries for Mullaney as he drives Josh Tongue through the covers off the back foot and pulls a short one over mid wicket.

He's scored 24 out of the 29 in this partnership with Hameed.

WICKET Procter c Overton b Davey 0published at 14:27 British Summer Time 21 September 2022

    Somerset 389 v Northants 28-2

Luke Procter is Northamptonshire's leading run scorer in the Championship this season but he's not going to be adding to his tally in this innings.

Like Emilio Gay before him, he plays a tentative defensive stroke and the ball flies off the edge of Craig Overton at second slip.

More misery for Danny Briggs, who is mowed over mid wicket for another six by Jack Taylor.

The timing is so sweet and he's making this look easy. It isn't.

There's a lot of swing for Kemar Roach but Tonm Kohler-Cadmore is undaunted and takes a couple of steps forward before the depositing the West Indian over long-on for six.

The final ball produces a similar stroke but he doesn't strike this one quiet as cleanly and has to settle for four. TKC is 29 not out.

In the other Division Two games, Glamorgan are still well on top at Cardiff.

David Lloyd made a majestic unbeaten 313, eventually declaring with his side on 550-5. Derbyshire's innings has just got under way, and they have lost an early wicket - Billy Godleman falling without scoring.

At Chester-le-Street, Durham have stretched their lead over Sussex to 89 - they are 251-3. Michael Jones fell agonisingly short of a hundred for 96, but Nic Maddison has continued the host's progress.

Four sixes and four fours for a player that does not regularly play red ball cricket. How Gloucester needed him today.

"Gay has been in excellent form", we said.

That is true but he is gone at Taunton, dangling his bat to a Josh Davey delivery and edging to the keeper.

Perhaps the only consolation is that he has passed 800 runs for the season.
