Hampshire needed to win their home game against Kent to take the title battle into the final week of the season but a 77-run defeat gave Surrey the chance to become champions - and they did not waste the opportunity.

"There's massive disappointment in the dressing room," Hampshire skipper James Vince told BBC Radio Solent.

"That session at the end of day one when we were bowled out in 18 overs was the difference in the end.

"We still believed coming into today that we had a chance. Whenever we've been tested throughout the season, we've always had answers. Unfortunately today we couldn't get over the line."

How long will it take? Five or six overs?

Chris Dent (57 not out) and Graeme van Buuren (46 not out) have steadied the ship after the hosts lost four in 15.3 overs.

At that stage they were 118 adrift and 30-4.

Danny Briggs will bowl to Van Buuren.

for Tom Lammonbypublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

That's uppish but Tom Lammonby finds a gap at mid-wicket off Tom Taylor and a boundary takes him to 50 off 116 balls - his third of the season.

There's another four in the next as Tom Abell cuts away a long hop by Rob Keogh.

    Somerset now lead by 237.

    Gloucs 255 &119-4 v Warwks 274 & 128 - target 148

Gloucester march to tea in complete control - just 29 short of victory.

They've come close to their first win of the season and fallen just short, notably away to Northants back in April.

They're all but certain to get over the line today.

Well batted, Dent and Van Buuren.

Well bowled Tom Price and Zafar Gohar.

  19. Postpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

With the title won by Surrey, and the high performance review's proposals not destined to take effect until 2024, the focus now switches to the issues of relegation and promotion.

It may be too late for Gloucestershire, but if they score the 29 they need to win after tea against Warwickshire, the 2021 champions will be favourites to join them in Division Two next year.

Middlesex, meanwhile, must consider the timing of a declaration carefully at Leicester, with Division Two promotion rivals Glamorgan having enforced the follow-on against Derbyshire.
