    Leicestershire 294 v Middlesex 297 & 234-6

Ryan Higgins is dismissed as a ball from leg spinner Rehan Ahmed keeps horribly low and knocks the leg stump out of the ground.

Higgins won't like it, but with a near 250-run lead, Middlesex won't mind too much seeing balls like that one.

Gloucestershire are nearly over the line.

A full ball drifting past leg stump is clipped away for four more.

Middlesex's lead nears 250, but their progress has been stalled by the loss of Max Holden for 91 and then Mark Stoneman for 81.

The opener went, three shy of 1000 runs for the season. He will have another chance to reach that landmark at Worcestershire next week.

  8. Consistency the key for Surreypublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Surrey 333 & 55-0 v Yorkshire 179 & 208

Most of the Surrey squad are out on the field, some with beers in hand, to take the applause of the crowd gathered at the Oval.

Several players have made 1,000 runs this summer, but Rory Burns is Surrey's highest scorer with 763. Whenever they have needed runs, though, someone has stepped up to provide them.

Dan Worrall, Jamie Overton and Jordan Clark have each contributed 30+ wickets and Kemar Roach has 25 from only six games.

They have barely needed spin at all but Cameron Steel's googly to bowl the dangerous Tom Kohler-Cadmore was a vital moment on the final day of their 10-wicket win over Yorkshire.

  9. Postpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Gloucs 255 & 100-4 v Warwks 274 & 128

The deficit is now under 50.

I thought it would be one of Hampshire or Lancashire for the title this season.

I didn't know whether Surrey would be able to make that leap back up but they have shown formidable form.

  12. 'Championship is heartbeat of English game'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Dean Wilson
Mirror journalist on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Some terrific scenes here at The Oval and it reminds me that the County Championship really is the heartbeat of the English game, no matter your view on all the varieties that are out there.

It is the bedrock on which everything is built and where players learn their trade. All the players now playing for England have come through the County Championship.

It is the test of the skills you have as a cricketer before you can then move onwards and upwards in your career.

This is the foundation of your talent and there are some terrific players out there taking the applause of the Surrey members.

Because of events at The Oval and Ageas Bowl, it's been a while since we told you what is going on at Taunton.

The Somerset openers are still together and Somerset's lead is 209.

A couple of twos by Tom Lammonby in Tom Taylor's latest over take him to 38 not out and Imam ul-Haq has 43.

  16. Surrey provide perfect Stewart tributepublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

Surrey beat Yorkshire by 10 wickets

Very fitting indeed that Surrey should win the title in a week when their ground was re-named in honour of one of their own, the Micky Stewart Oval.

They have won eight of their 15 games, with the other five ending in draws, and consistency with the bat and ball has been the hallmark of their triumph.

Hampshire have actually won one more game than the champions, but when the pressure was on they were bowled out for 57 on their own ground.

Some will question why Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes were allowed to play for Surrey this week, when Joe Root didn't turn out for Yorkshire and other England Test players were given a rest, but that shouldn't take anything away from their title success.

  17. 'Ruthless with bat and relentless with ball'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London cricket commentator

This has been a real squad performance from Surrey. Look at the results - eight wins, five draws and no defeats - that is Championship winning stuff.

The success has been built on being ruthless with the bat and relentless with the ball.

  18. 'Surrey thoroughly deserve the title'published at 14:45 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Jonathan Doidge
    BBC Radio Leeds cricket commentator

    Congratulations Surrey.

Hampshire are a very good side, but there is that X-Factor about this side. They come at you from both ends with the ball, and then they had Ollie Pope back in for this game with the bat and what a difference he made.

    They thoroughly deserve the title.

WICKET Aitchison b Patel 6published at 14:45 British Summer Time 22 September 2022

    Glamorgan 550-5 dec v Derbys 253

    That's his fifth!

Ben Aitchison plays a devil of a shot and is bowled round his legs trying to work the ball around the corner. He's gone for 6 off 66 balls.

297 behind. The follow on will almost certainly be enforced.
