Credit to the Edgbaston groundstaff for getting play started on time after heavy overnight rain.

Mohammad Abbas has the ball bowling to Alex Davies. Abbas, with no more than a light jog to the crease, and a ball which Davies runs down to third.

Nottinghamshire secured promotion yesterday by bowling Durham out to claim enough bonus points.

If they can take another seven wickets today - with David Bedingham injured for Durham - they will seal the title.

The visitors come back 14-2 chasing a nominal 577.

Middlesex are also effectively up after taking maximum batting points with an over to spare at New Road.

It means even with a draw against Worcestershire they cannot be overtaken and they lead by 284 on first innings.

Which leaves Glamorgan facing a solemn day of what might have been as they try to finish with victory at Hove.

They took a 275-run first-innings lead at Sussex but the home side then wiped out the deficit without losing a wicket following on.

Sussex resume 312-0 leading by 37.

Derbyshire will also hope to finish the season with victory, they need to take eight more Leicestershire wickets at the Racecourse Ground with the Foxes 131-2, 188 behind.

Rewind 12 months to the last day of the County Championship season and all eyes were on Edgbaston again.

The task that day was simple, too - they had to beat Somerset.

But the objective was different as victory would see them leapfrog Lancashire and be crowned county champions.

Last year, they resumed their second innings on 179-1, blasted 115 in 15 overs to set up a target of 273 in 79 overs.

52 overs later, Somerset had been bundled out for 154 and the Bears were County Champions for an eighth time.

So Warwickshire go into day four knowing that they must force a win to ensure Division One survival.

Yorkshire's loss to Gloucestershire yesterday has given them a glimmer, but the problem is how far behind the state of the game is after just 73 full overs were completed on the first two days.

Warwickshire begin the day just 23 runs ahead with eight wickets remaining. The magic number is on Bears captain Will Rhodes to find a target that is tempting for Hampshire to chase and gives his bowlers enough time to pull off an unlikely victory.

If the Bears bat for 30 overs and score at five an over, the extra 150 would take any target to around 175 and would give them a ballpark 60 overs to try to take ten wickets. If they can score more quickly, so much the better

We are nearly in October, so expecting to go beyond 5.30pm is asking a lot as we have seen a host of bad light calls in the last couple of rounds of matches, so that is something else to factor in.

There is no point in erring on the side of caution - a loss does not matter.

It feels like a tough one for Warwickshire to win from here. Tough, but not impossible.

  9. Postpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 29 September 2022

Morning and welcome to the final day of the 2022 County Championship season.

Plenty of eyes will be on Edgbaston where Warwickshire need to force an unlikely win to secure their survival in Division One and send Yorkshire down.

In Division Two, it only seems a matter of time before Middlesex seal promotion to join Nottinghamshire in the top tier in 2023.
