  1. Pollard and Thompson star as Spirit beat woeful Originals

Kieron Pollard starred with the bat and Jordan Thompson with the ball as London Spirit dominated a woeful Manchester Originals in the men’s Hundred at Lord’s.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Spirit posted 160-6 from their 100 balls.

West Indies veteran Pollard, 35, smashed an unbeaten 34 from just 11 deliveries, with one four and four sixes, and Spirits captain Eoin Morgan scored a significant 37 from 26 balls.

Originals – led by England white-ball captain Jos Buttler – never really got going and were bowled out for 108 in 98 balls as Thompson finished with outstanding figures of 4-21, the best of the competition so far.

Spirit have won both their opening games in this year’s competition, while Originals have suffered two defeats.

    Here’s what also happened:

    • Spirit opener Zak Crawley scored a 34-ball 41, including three fours and two sixes.
    • Seamer Paul Walter was the pick of the Originals bowlers with figures of 2-18.
    • Buttler scored just six off 11 balls, with Mason Crane taking a terrific catch off the bowling of Thompson.
    • Andre Russell was run-out for six after an outstanding direct hit from Liam Dawson.
    • Spirit spinners Crane and Dawson took two wickets each.
    • England and Tottenham football captain Harry Kane was in attendance, wearing a London Spirit jersey, as he handed the captains the coin at the toss.

    What’s next?

London Spirit will travel to Southampton on Friday evening and face defending champions Southern Brave. That game starts at 18:30 BST and will follow the same women’s fixture, which begins at 15:00.

Manchester Originals will host Trent Rockets at Old Trafford on Saturday at 14:30, with the women’s sides playing each other at 11:00.

  2. 'A great start'

London Spirit captain Eoin Morgan to Sky Sports: "It was clinical. It was tough, Manchester Originals bowled brilliantly in the powerplay and set a template and our guys came back in and said it was moving a little bit and hard to get away so we tried to hit them off it as much as we could and then try and replicate it with the ball and the guys were excellent. We went with the seamers from one end because they predominantly had right handers and we bowled spin at the other end.

"When everyone is struggling to hit over the boundary on the bigger side of the ground - the likes of Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard are the guys you pay the big bucks for because no long boundary is long enough for them, particularly when you're taking pace off the ball they just seem to muscle it. Kieron just continues to get better and better but his value as a leader within the group is brilliant as well.

"I bowled more sets of 10 than any other captain last year and it didn't work - I learnt the hard way - but a bowler like Mason Crane, who can beat both edges, and certainly try and control his length and take wickets, he might get hit for a couple of sixes but they are taking on the deepest men in the ground. He was outstanding today.

"We've won twice as many games as we did last year. We are very real about how long the competition and how you have to play to get to the latter stages of the competition but it is a great start."

    Batting, bowling, fielding.

The complete performance from London Spirit tonight.

  4. Post update

Match Hero Jordan Thompson: "It was a great night for us. The lads batted really well for us to get us to that score. We bowled well the other night too and we just carried that on here, so it's a good win.

"With the short boundary on one side, I knew I had to try and keep it away from there. They probably focused on that more than we did so I think that got us the wickets. It's just about mixing up your pace and lengths and using it well.

"The boys came off and said the pitch was quite tricky so we were happy with 160. Our variations with the ball became more effective then.

"To have someone of Kieron Pollard's class to get us some quick runs at the end is brilliant to have. Hopefully we can continue on this winning run."

Originals were completely outplayed. Spirit were far above them tonight - they batted well with Kieron Pollard and Eoin Morgan being destructive. The bowlers thens et the tone and there was some brilliant fielding.

It was the complete performance by Spirit and it will be something that is spoken about and that sets their bar high. It will give them a lot of confidence after a nail-baiting derby win in their first game.

  6. Post update

Manchester Originals managed to avoid the competition's lowest-ever score but they were bowled out for 108, after London Spirit had made 160.

How good are Spirit's bowlers looking?

Jordan Thompson was the star with four wickets but Nathan Ellis, Chris Wood, Mason Crane and Liam Dawson were all brilliant. It's unlikely any of them will miss much of the tournament for international call-ups, and they look like the best bowling attack of all the teams at the moment.

The Spirits' fielding today has been high class. That Mason Crane catch, the run-out of Andre Russell, some of the stops on the boundary to stop two; they've just outplayed them.

That was an impressive performance from London Spirit, they've won it quite comfortably.

  9. LONDON SPIRIT WIN

Mason Crane gets his revenge on Parkinson as he is out caught and that is a completely dominant win for the London Spirit.

Eoin Morgan's men go two from two and what a remarkable turnaround from their last-place finish in 2021. Are they one of the teams to beat now?

Matt Parkinson didn't look like he wanted to head to bat but he manages to hit his first ball for six.

  11. Originals 108-9

Go on, son! Matt Parkinson smashes his fellow leg-spinner into the stands!

That was brilliantly taken. High fives all round. A good piece of bowling and a good piece of fielding.

  13. WICKET

    Klaassen c Rossington b Wood 2 (Originals 102-9)

Feel for him no more, Chris Wood has his wicket!

Klaassen edges it behind to the keeper Rossington, who takes a smart one-handed grab, and if you forget that drop from Thompson then London Spirit have been flawless in the field.

I feel for Chris Wood. He's been very good tonight and deserves a wicket.

He's had a great night but just couldn't get his hands underneath it. The crowd rather unkindly boo.

  16. Hartley dropped on 14

    Originals 100-8

Tom Hartley skies one up in the air and Jordan Thompson, who's bowled so well, drops a simple chance.

It won't cost them much but he will be disappointed as Eoin Morgan will want his men to keep their standards up.

  17. Post update

    10 balls to go graphic
  18. Originals 98-8

    Target 161

The impressive Nathan Ellis finishes wicketless but has only conceded 16 runs from his 20 balls, which is quality.

63 from 10 balls. I don't think we're in for a tight finish here, sadly.

It's a little bit like a Nick Kyrgios underarm serve as he looks to trick his opponent.

An extraordinary shot. What on earth has happened there?
