That's all from us for today. The perfect start for England in Australia with impressive performances from both batters and bowlers, a close game ahead of the World Cup and - of course - a win.

You can read all about it in Timothy Abraham's excellent report, right here.

As Clint mentions, it is over to Canberra next and the prospect of that fearsome Aussie bowling line-up returning. It should make for another great contest.

Join us on Wednesday morning from 08:45 BST for that one. See you then!

In Canberra, for the next T20, Australia will bring back Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa. That is a substantial improvement to their bowling stocks.

Player of the match Alex Hales, speaking to Fox: "Really proud of an all-round performance. We set a good total with the bat and then defended the total. It looked like it was getting away from us with Warner and Stoinis but we dragged it back.

"For myself, this is an opportunity I didn't think I would get again. I am keen to make the most of it and I am hoping this is just the start. I wasn't my most fluent for my first 12 balls but then it got easier.

"Playing in Australia (in the Big Bash) gives you confidence that I can take it to the next level in England."

England captain Jos Buttler, speaking to Fox: "It was a great game of cricket and we are delighted to get over the line. Australia played really well, put us under pressure. We were favourties for large parts of the chase. We needed to take wickets and that's what we did.

"I have lots of experience but any time you have a period where you don't play for a while you are not sure how you will go. It was nice to get that boundary early which made me feel settled.

"Alex has a fantastic record in Australia. It was a really difficult decision as Alex and Phil Salt have been batting really well but we just felt Alex's experience here just got ahead. He's a destructive player and I really enjoyed that partnership."

We are talking about this game as a warm-up for the World Cup but there's no such thing as a warm-up between England and Australia. We saw from the first few overs how good the pitch was that this was going to be a good game.

It could have gone either way. Australia will feel they should have won, and England will feel they could have probably bowled a touch better.

Australia captain Aaron Finch, speaking to Fox: "Nathan Ellis was outstanding and bowled two difficult overs in the powerplay. He's a fantastic bowler. He has done it at domestic level and every time he plays for Australia. He trains the house down and is a good man to have about the team.

"Against great players like Jos Buttler and Alex Hales sometimes there isn't much you could do. When they get in front of the game they can be hard to stop. They are great players for a reason. We got ourselves into a position to win the game but couldn't quite finish it off."

Alex Hales was the chief example of England's fearless approach. Given the nod over Phil Salt, the pressure was on to perform and he did just that.

His brilliant 84 from 51 balls saw him named played of the match at the Optus Stadium.

England's batters showed again they have no fear. It was something which was brought in under Eoin Morgan, that tenacity and ferocious approach, which has seem them be so successful and they want to continue.

It might have been four wickets for Mark Wood but for Matthew Wade's intervention.

England opted not to appeal in the end, though, and will be glad that didn't cost them. We've got Jos Buttler's reasoning for that coming up shortly...

Kevin Ticehurst: Get in there England, I really thought we wouldn’t pull that off. But those last five overs, we really did pull it back. Wade should have been out for obstruction. Thankfully it didn’t come down to that!

Australia opener David Warner: "We've seen in the Big Bash high totals and the wicket got better and better as the game went on. Credit to the way England bowled, especially Mark Wood's spell at the end, but we should have got home there.

"Wood is sharp and a great competitor. He brings spark and energy and is a great bowler for England. England got off to a great start and they came at us hard with the bat, that's the way they play. If you can get a wicket it gives you a sniff. It's about us executing our skills.

"I think we're ready now. I think the fans will see high scoring and that's what you want."

On his own innings: "It's about playing back-to-back games. When you play 10 or 15 in a row you get momentum. I've never doubted my form. Who will open with me? I don't know. Aaron Finch at this stage as Cameron Green is not in the World Cup squad."

It was good death bowling by England in what was a tremendous game of cricket. It's been an entertaining night. Well done to England for holding their nerve when it mattered.

  15. 'Those are the moments you want to be involved in'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 9 October 2022

England all-rounder Sam Curran, speaking on BT Sport: "What a game - 200 each on the board!

"We batted really well as a group, Jos and Hales played beautifully and laid a platform. It's great to have Jos in the side after an injury.

"We knew Australia would come really hard. They've got such a powerful batting line-up so we're really pleased with the way we bowled. What a great start to the series."

On the last over: "The over before, I executed a few yorkers then missed one and it goes for six. It shows how hard it is at the end but those are the moments you want to be involved in.

"Some days you might win the game, some days you lose. We've got great senior players helping me through - Jos, Mo, there were a few discussions.

"They backed me in that situation and I'm really glad we could start with a win."

Mark Wood was excellent again for England. This is the third game in a row that he has claimed three wickets.

What made this performance so impressive was the way he came back after being put under real pressure early on by David Warner.
