It certainly was a day to remember for Abrar Ahmed and it has left this Test intriguingly poised.

  2. 'No mystery, Abrar just bowled beautifully'published at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

More from Ben Duckett on Abrar Ahmed:"I can only talk individually and I had my plans for him. He was basically a leg-spinner who had a good googly. There was no real mystery to it but he bowled beautifully today. I'm sure we'll have our plans second innings but I'm pretty sure it won't be blocking it.

"I think I swept about 90% and when you're sweeping you don't necessarily look for it but his googly was a lot slower. Most of the guys said they did pick him, he just bowled some nice deliveries and unfortunately for us, it was his day today.

"There was limited footage of him, mainly of him bowling in the nets and not much to left-handers but to me personally, I'd rather not know all of his tricks because I'll be worrying about what he can do. I'd rather focus on what I can do to him. When you're sweeping, he generally bowls quite slow, it doesn't matter too much which way it is turning."

  3. 'Game is going to move forward quickly'published at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

England opener Ben Duckett, speaking on Sky Sports: "I'd say it's level at the minute. We were a couple of quick wickets away from it being our day. We'll have to see how it goes in the morning but we're pretty happy overall.

"Today was about assessing those conditions early and as soon as the seamer bowled that slower ball, it was clear it was going to spin. I think the game is going to move forward pretty quickly.

"If we can keep them to around our score, anything less is a bonus, then I think it should be very hard work in the fourth innings.

"We prepared for this pitch, we knew they wanted it to spin, we just didn't know how early it would happen. My approach is pretty obvious, I said to myself that I'm going to sweep both ways and I'd much rather getting out playing that shot than a forward defence."

On message from Stokes and McCullum: "Very happy. You're know what they're like, they're very positive. We were actually really happy at lunch with the rate we scored. A lot of teams might have been quite tentative and you could easily have been 100-6 at lunch. The rate we scored at, they're pretty happy.

"I think it'll be an exciting game, I hope it keeps spinning."

Duckett got a lot of runs from the sweep shot. He's such an exciting player to watch. If you want to watch England now, you turn up on time because you want to watch the openers bat.

It's a great experience for all of the batters. Probably more beneficial here than in Rawalpindi because there were more questions asked of them.

The batsman that annoyed me the most today was Jack Leach playing that reverse-sweep first ball. I think he's trying to get into the feel of this new England setup and I reckon that doesn't really suit him.

England shouldn't have played as many funky shots. Yes you score quicker if you play all those reverse-sweeps but you also lose wickets quicker. On a pitch that's turning like this one, England should have shown some more restraint.

Pakistan are still behind. With the rate that England scored, Pakistan still have a long way to go. Any lead they get here will be crucial.

  6. 'I will not forget today'published at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed, speaking on Sky Sports, via an interpreter: "I will not forget today, I want to win this match for Pakistan and also do well in the coming matches.

"I could definitely name a lot of people (who helped in getting to this point). I had two years layoff with a hairline fracture and now I'm back in the side.

"I read the wicket when I started to bowl. I bowled cross-seam to start to see what was required. Variations were the key on this pitch.

"Ben Stokes was my favourite wicket. My favourite player!

"I definitely thought about getting five wickets on debut but not so quickly. We had a chat before the match and I said I would take five or six wickets."

England seem to be more interested in the rate they score at rather than their total. Likewise, when they're in the field, they're more interested in their strike-rate than the runs they're conceding.

Pakistan raced along in that last session. I'd rather be in their shoes, I think they've just edged this day.

Abrar is in good form. He picked up 43 wickets in seven games before coming into the Test match. You want to play when you're in form, that's when you should be thrown in the deep end. I was surprised when he wasn't given an opportunity in the first Test. He offers something unique.

England would have seen a lot of footage of him but seeing footage and actually playing are two different things. He's proven that he's something very unique and that he can survive in Test cricket. What a dream start, you really couldn't have asked for a better start.

Of course, the day really belongs to Abrar Ahmed.

He ripped through the England line-up on his way to taking 7-114 on his Test debut. At one stage it looked like he was going to take all 10.

Ben Stokes' stunned reaction to being bowled perhaps summed it up.

England bamboozled by a 'mystery' spinner. Again.

The batsmen haven't even waited for the reading, they've walked off.

We still had 10 overs remaining.

  13. Close of play - Pak 107-2published at 28 overs

Indeed it is. Saud Shakeel and Babar Azam waste no time in striding off the field. They will be more than happy to survive the day with their wickets in tact.

England will have been desperate to have taken at least one more wicket. But as it stands I think Pakistan edge the day, especially after losing the toss.

  14. Pak 107-2published at 28 overs

Ooh, good delivery from Joe Root as he gets one to skid through and beat the outside edge of Babar Azam.

The umpires have got the light meter out for the first time. The sun has yet to fully go down but it is gloomy out there.

This could be it for the day...

  15. Pak 104-2published at 27 overs

Great footwork from Saud Shakeel as he dances down the track to Jack Leach and carts the ball over mid-wicket for four.

The next ball he takes a giant step forward before heaving the ball in exactly the same place.

The camera focuses on Ben Stokes, he looks deep in thought.

I've noticed that the sun sets ever so slightly slower here in Multan than in Rawalpindi.

  17. Pak 95-2published at 26 overs

Just one slip and a short leg in for Babar Azam in contrast to Saud Shakeel, who has a lot more company.

Will Jacks is not really threatening at the moment. The ones and twos are easy to come by, and poor balls are being sent to the fence.

Phillip Bryant: Pakistan 5-1, then 51-2...does that mean next wicket will be at 512-3?

  19. Pak 91-2published at 25 overs

A rare missed opportunity by Babar Azam, as he cracks a short ball from Jack Leach straight to point.

He makes no mistake the next delivery, though. It is poor delivery from Leach and is promptly dispatched to the boundary.

You don't want to give Babar one chance let alone two.

The run-rate is 3.07 and I think Pakistan will be happy with that pace but it's hard to pick who's ahead at this stage.

We haven't seen any real grip or bite off the surface once the ball has gotten softer.
