It's great to be here, there are some kites flying around but it is still very misty and I'm not sure that will improve a huge amount looking at the forecast.

The team flew and they were stuck in Islamabad because it was not safe to land in Multan. They were stuck waiting for the mist to clear.

There are two Pakistan players playing catch with a red ball at the far end of the ground and I can't see the ball. Visibility is going to be quite tough.

If you're fielding on the boundary, you are going to lose sight of the ball momentarily and be relying on a team-mate to shout your name to let you know it's coming your way.

The restricted visibility that some thought would threaten the mornings of this match has not materialised, even if a haze will probably stick around until lunchtime.

That's not say the air quality is perfect - it isn't, and forms part of the unique challenge of playing in Multan.

Security is tighter than the first Test in Rawalpindi, when players and media stayed in nearby capital Islamabad. Here even the press are given an armed escort. There was gunfire heard down the road from the England team hotel yesterday, which was attributed to a dispute between rival businesses.

  4. Misty Multanpublished at 04:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

There were some concerns the lingering mist in Multan could delay the start of play, but we should be fine for an on time start. There is still some mist but it is lifting all the time with blue skies up ahead.

There are also hopes the pitch will not quite be the flat, lifeless road we saw in Rawalpindi

It is dry with some cracks that could open up, with the expectation that it could start to spin pretty quickly.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: “I definitely would have batted first. We’ll try to put a little bit of pressure on them.

"The pitch looks a bit drier but we need to bowl in good areas and try to take wickets.

"We have three changes: Abrar Ahmed debuts, Faheem is back, Naseem is not playing because his shoulder is not good. Nawaz is in for Azhar Ali."

England captain Ben Stokes: "I don't think we can read into the surface too much, we'll have to wait and see what it offers in the first hour of cricket. Hopefully we can go out and set the same sort of benchmark we did in the last Test match.

"Obviously, going out and playing some exciting, positive cricket is what we're all about. Carrying on the momentum from last week, we've taken a lot of confidence from the win so we're looking forward to getting going."

    How significant could that be?

Welcome to our coverage of the second Test between England and Pakistan from Multan.

England secured one of their all-time great overseas victories in the first Test in Rawalpindi. Another win here would secure their first series win in Pakistan since 2000.

    Time for the toss...
