Wood falls over and Babar plays that as comfortably as one could. Wood then goes on towards the ball on all fours. He's got a smile on his face as he normally does.

The crowd is not as big as we were led to believe but there's a good splattering of spectators round the ground.

  2. Pak 28-1published at 8 overs

Mark Wood is steaming in, even ending up on the deck after one delivery before crawling along to pick up the ball.

He bangs in the final ball of the over but it sits up for Babar Azam, who expertly cuts away through point for four.

Katherine: I am forever conflicted about England's new approach. Today I feel we have scored recklessly under par and handed the opposition control of the match on day one. But with seven spectacular wins out of eight, no doubt I will be proved wrong. Again.

Moose: Nothing against Ollie Pope but I think we might regret not having Foakes keeping in this Test.

  4. Pak 24-1published at 8 overs

There's a brief flurry of excitement from the England slips as Babar Azam plays an uppish cut shot that goes fine and away for four.

That wasn't a bad length from Leach, but Babar, playing it late, timed the shot perfectly.

Some of our more fickle fans (Paul 10:09) don’t deserve Stokes/ McCullum. It’s the way we are playing. Enjoy it. As someone said better 281 like that than 131 all out like last year.

    Neil, Oxfordshire

Easy to forget that 281 runs is a competitive total. The old England, when having a less than stellar day, would have been skittled for 150.

  6. Pak 20-1published at 7 overs

Mark Wood is warming up nicely, his last delivery was clocked at 97.3mph.

England are changing plans. Leg slip has come out and now there's a fly slip.

He's there right behind first slip and almost exclusively for the upper-cut.

A top edge that goes very fine. Shafique was definitely not in control of that.

I think that last one came up at 155 kmph. That's 96 mph.

  9. Pak 20-1published at 6.3 overs

    Top-edged and safe!

It is short from Mark Wood, who is certainly cranking it up. Abdullah Shafique goes for the pull but has no idea where the ball is going as it hits the top edge and flies over the slips for four.

The next delivery Shafique leans back and attempts to glance the ball over the wicketkeeper, but it is too quick for him and it fizzes through to Ollie Pope.

Still two slips and a short leg in for Jack Leach, who is starting to find his length and get a bit of turn as a result.

A maiden over will make him feel a bit better.

Tommy L Yeah: Bazball won’t always work and it’ll be frustrating when it doesn’t. I’ll take the aggressive intent and burning desire to produce a positive result every time, though…

  12. Pak 16-1published at 5 overs

Babar Azam was dismissed via the short ball in the first Test and it looks like England will employ a similar tactic here. He does well to push a single off the back foot into the off side.

Abdullah Shafique, who was also dismissed by a short ball in Rawalpindi, gets some similar treatment too, but he safely ducks well out of the way of three bouncers.

He took a wicket last over but James Anderson is out of the attack. Here comes Mark Wood.

You can't bowl there to Babar I'm afraid. It's been cut ruthlessly past Duckett.

  15. Pak 15-1published at 3.3 overs

An up and down over to say the least from Jack Leach.

His second delivery is a beauty that jags sharply away from Babar Azam and Ollie Pope takes it at chest height behind the stumps.

But next ball he is too short again and Babar helps himself to another three runs.

  16. Pak 12-1published at 3.1 overs

Too short from Jack Leach. He isn't having a good day so far.

Babar Azam almost casually rocks back and cuts away for four.

Listen to the crowd, it's the most animated they've been. Babar is off the mark. The beloved Babar.

  18. Pak 8-1published at 3 overs

The noise gets louder as Babar Azam pushes through the covers and Pakistan run three.

Still, a fine start from James Anderson and England. This match continues to race along.

There is a huge cheer from the crowd. You know what that means...here's Babar.
