There's an appeal but umpire Dar says no. He's unmoved there. Abrar is trying to convince his captain to review.

I want to see if there was a ruffle of dust there when it pitched, I think there was. It's a very dry pitch.

  2. Pakistan reviewpublished at 06:54 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2022

Is Joe Root in trouble here? Abrar Ahmed gets one to grip in the surface and Root is caught in front on the back foot.

The umpire turns down the appeals - but Pakistan review.

There wasn't a single cone, a single bollard or a single 'variable speed limit' sign in the 330 mile drive up to here. The roads were gorgeous.

  5. Eng 145-2published at 24 overs

Ollie Pope goes for a reverse sweep that Zahid Mahmood fumbles at backward point and England run two to move Pope to 48.

Pope then attempts another reverse that escapes past the wicketkeeper and away for four.

Was there bat on that? No. Marais Erasmus gives it as leg byes. Pope has to wait for his half-century.

Small crowd but enthusiastic. It's not an easy place to get to out here.

It's an extended morning session because of morning prayers on a Friday that last for an hour.

  8. Eng 138-2published at 23 overs

This outfield looks quick. Ollie Pope only seems to nudge the ball into a yawning gap through mid-wicket and it races towards the boundary before being clawed back before the rope.

Time for another change as slow left-armer Mohammad Nawaz comes into the attack.

Simon Mahon: Loving watching Abrar Ahmed this morning. Few more exciting things in cricket than a new mystery spinner arriving on the scene.

Slightly concerned England have picked the wrong side and need an extra spinner themselves.

  11. Eng 126-2published at 21 overs

Joe Root gets off the mark with a drive to cover for a single.

This match now feels brilliantly poised. England have raced along as expected, but if another wicket or two falls Pakistan will feel that represents a decent morning's work.

Lovely shot form Ollie Pope. The ball is just starting to misbehave as well, so early in this Test match.

  13. Eng 122-2published at 20 overs

Joe Root is the new batter to join Ollie Pope, who drives Zahid Mahmood through the covers for four. Brilliant shot.

England determined not to let the wicket check their momentum.

You don't know what a good score is. It is spinning but we don't know what a finger spinner will do.

Well, Abrar Ahmed, on debut, has a second wicket. This time it is the prized wicket of Ben Duckett. He was on a bit of a tear.

Duckett lbw Abrar 63 (Eng 117-2)

Out! Babar Azam's late decision to review is vindicated as the replay shows the ball was pitching in line and going on to hit the stumps.

Ben Duckett's spritely innings is at an end. Abrar Ahmed now has two wickets on debut.

The run map shows Ben Duckett scored 63 with 1 six, 9 fours, 2 threes, 3 twos, and 9 singles for EnglandImage source, BBC Sport

The strange thing is, it doesn't look like it's hit the glove this time.

Who'd be an umpire in this match?

With two seconds to go on the clock, Babar Azam has chosen to go for the review. It's been review city this morning.

  19. Pakistan reviewpublished at 19 overs

Now it is Pakistan's turn to review after an lbw shout is turned down.

Will Ben Duckett survive this time?
