I’m holding a very restless baby who won’t sleep. Hoping England’s bowlers can lull him to sleep with the sound of ball on stumps. In his short lifetime he’s heard England win a world cup and beat Pakistan. If it carries on I’ll read him England scorecards from the 90s to give him a more realistic view of life following the cricket.

Every run is being applauded by the Pakistani fans.

Wood tries to test Shakeel with a bit of short stuff but the challenge facing him is shown by the fact his first bumper barely gets up high enough to clear a ducking Shakeel, who is not a tall man, and only just carries to Pope.

Just two singles from the over, Pakistan need another 133 to win.

Root has bowled really well this morning. He's doing a lot of work for his captain.

There has definitely been a 'do it in singles' feel to Pakistan's approach so far and they take four of them from Root's latest over.

Some good positive running for a couple of them, putting pressure on the fielders in the ring.

  6. Pak 216-5published at 73 overs

    Target 355

Just a single from Wood's over but rather impressively given the surface, he goes manage to get a bouncer to go over Shakeel's head. That must have taken some effort!

Seven overs to the new ball now.

Nawaz hasn't played a lot of red-ball cricket of late, just six matches in the last two years. He's not been in great touch.

First bowling change of the morning, Mark Wood comes on to replace Anderson.

Really good over from Joe Root. A maiden.

There is a big appeal when Shakeel goes back to cut but the ball stays very low and goes close to the under-edge of the bat.

In the end they decide against a review. Good call, UltraEdge shows there was no bat on it. The noise was likely Shakeel's bat hitting the ground a moment later.

It's a thick edge and there's no slip at home. It's a big gap between the wicket keeper and backward point. It probably wouldn't have carried to slip though.

  11. Pak 215-5published at 71 overs

    Target 355

A fairly eventful over as Anderson's first ball stays low and nearly gets through Shakeel, who just gets his bat to it in time.

The next ball flicks off hip and they go through for the leg bye, Pope collects the ball and is not far off with his shy at the stumps - that would have been tight.

Nawaz is off the mark with a boundary but it shows why England don't have a slip in. Outside edge but the ball dropped well short of where a slip would be and trickles to the fence.

I woke up at 3.30 and couldn't risk going back to sleep in case I missed the start of play. I'm now hiding my phone under the duvet to avoid waking my husband up. The things we do for the love of cricket!!

Where is Salman? That is a puzzle. He is a batsman more than a bowler so there must be something wrong with him.

Root had got a leading edge with the first ball of the over as Faheem tried to work to leg, the first moment of concern for Pakistan, and four balls later he got his man.

Pakistan still with the left-handers, holding back Agha Salman and sending in Mohammad Nawaz.

England's first wicket of the day and it's Joe Root's 50th Test wicket.

    It's a lovely wicket, a classic off spinner's wicket to a left-hander.

Breakthrough! Well flighted from Joe Root, Faheem Ashraf pushes at it with hard hands and there is just enough turn to find the edge.

It goes relatively gently to Zak Crawley at slip and he makes no mistake. That's 50 wickets in Tests for Joe Root.

It's a cagey start by both sides. I think Pakistan will be happier, about 20 minutes gone and the batsmen haven't really been troubled.

Faheem clips another single to the left of mid-on. No scares so far this morning for Pakistan. Fair to say this old ball is doing absolutely zip.
