  2. 'I was thinking about the five-fer'published at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2022

More from Rehan Ahmed, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "I was thinking about the five-fer. I'd be lying if I said I didn't. But at the same time I was trying to forget it. The more you try and chase the wicket, it just won't happen. It was nice to get a leg spin wicket."

On being promoted up the order to number three: "Stokes just said to get your pads on. He just said to try and finish it tonight if we had more time. Over here everything happens really quick. I had a deep sleep after my first day and was fully recovered."

  3. 'A dream come true'published at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2022

Rehan Ahmed speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "Probably the best day of my life again. To get five on my debut is a dream come true. It's great.

"Because it was reversing a bit I didn't get used. Stokes just said 'stay ready' like you always have to be but I was enjoying it regardless out there.

"I've bowled better balls and got wickets so just to get Babar Azam out is a dream come true. He's a very good player. Pope has got good hands so it's good the ball went to him. I liked Rizwan's wicket because I've been working on my leg spin for the last two years. To get one to spin on the other side was great.

"My googly is quite natural. When I started bowling leg spin I could only bowl googly so my leg spin has been a work on, and obviously my googly is as well. Hopefully I get that leg spin spinning more."

On comparisons with Shane Warne: "I'm working on a few things but i can't say I'm as good as him just yet."

Ben Duckett is another one whose status has gone from practicality zero to irreplaceable. He's had a great tour. He looks like a fixture for the moment.

England's run chase was incredibly positive. It took so much tension out of this target. We know wisdes have lost smaller than 167 but because they attacked right from the start, they got 50 in four or five overs and suddenly that target had diminished.

A four-ball duck is not the way Azhar Ali will have wanted to finish, but he ends his Test career having scored 7,142 runs in 97 appearances at a very respectable average of 42.26.

Retiring Pakistan batter Azhar Ali, speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously I wanted to finish on a high. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. It was a mixed feeling. I am thankful to England and Pakistan, who both gave me a send off.

"I was more emotional in first innings than second. I was quite calm but I am a human being and was feeling some emotions. I played the wrong line and Leachy, my old [Somerset] team-mate got me out. I have faced him a lot in the nets. It was my time to say goodbye."

On his career highlights: "There have been a lot of ups and downs. 300 is a special thing for me because not many have done it and scoring a double hundred in Australia. If I had to say one day in my whole career it was winning the Champions Trophy."

Rehan Ahmed has the best figures by an England leg-spinner since 1959. He's already the youngest player in men's Test cricket. He has become the seventh youngest from any country to take a Test five wicket haul and the youngest leg-spinner to take a Test five wicket haul.

He broke England's record of the youngest to take five Test wickets by two years and that had stood since 1930, when a 20-year-old Bill Voce took five on debut in the West Indies. The previous youngest English spinner with five wickets was Pat Pocock in 1968. Ahmed has the best match figures on debut since Peter Such in 1993.

Stuart Broad, speaking to Sky Sports about what's next for Rehan Ahmed: "You want him playing cricket. You would like some exposure in county cricket in April and May. He is obviously naturally talented and will grow his knowledge and experience by playing. He looks like he has so much skill in the locker already. He turns his leg-spinner a little bit and googly a lot. He is confident. He has a lot of attributes going his way."

After Ahmed picked up those wickets he looked over the moon! We say Stuart Broad is the nighthawk but he's never done it.

There's only one true nighthawk and it's Rehan Ahmed. It's fantastic to see him play and this is the future.

England spinner Rehan Ahmed, speaking to Sky Sports: "From not bowling in the first session to five wickets, it is a dream come true."

On his wait to bowl: "I was just enjoying it anyway. I was loving it out there. It was nice to get the ball. I was warming up for three hours."

On his long hop to dismiss Babar Azam: "I'll take them wickets. You bowl better balls and don't get wickets. It is great."

Asked what was said before he went out to bat at number three, Ahmed said: "Try to finish it tonight! If we faced another seven overs it would have been quite easy. I should have played it straight."

It's beyond our expectations. I thought it would be much harder for them but they got the wickets in batches. There were moments this morning where it looked really quiet but then they got the three wickets.

It was mysterious why Rehan Ahmed didn't come on until later. I think Stokes wanted to keep that innings under control and there was always the possibility that Babar and Shakeel would race away. But he started to run out of options.

Rizwan, we know he's dangerous, his dismissal was the one that excites you.

England bowler Stuart Broad on Sky Sports: "It is just wonderful. We have played in teams that would have prodded and poked and gone nowhere. Duckett and Crawley calmed all nerves. As soon as your opening pair do that it is sort of game won.

"I have no doubt at the innings break there would have been a conversation about winning tonight."

Ben Stokes looks resigned to coming back tomorrow as it gets even gloomier, though he still manages to sweep the final ball of Nauman Ali's over for four.

In fact, that was the final ball of the day as the umpires call stumps.

England close on 112-2 needing just 55 more runs to win and complete an unprecedented series clean sweep.
