  1. 'All about tomorrow and putting them under pressure'published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

New Zealand centurion Tom Blundell: "I came out in a difficult situation. To build couple partnerships along the way, I am pretty pleased. It was probably the easiest to bat during the day. I thought they still bowled well.

"After that hundred it felt like we could put it [the pressure] back on them. We come out tomorrow and hopefully can pick up a couple of wickets early.

"The style they play, they come quite hard. We managed to get a couple which was great but it is now all about coming out tomorrow and putting them under pressure."

On the 'drop' of Stuart Broad: "It could have been three - a bit of a mix-up. It doesn't look good on TV."

England might be on top but they could be out of sight already if it wasn't for Tom Blundell.

The New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter scored a brilliant 138 to take his side to within touching distance of the tourists first-innings total.

He does seem to enjoy batting against England.

  3. 'Lead of 300 and we're right in the game'published at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

More from Ollie Robinson on BT Sport: "For us now, it is just pile the runs on and bat for as long as possible.

"If we score well tomorrow, maybe bat under lights tomorrow night but I think if we can get a lead of 300 then we're right in the game.

"Hopefully the boys can go and bang it around again."

I don't think New Zealand bowled very well there. They allowed England to get away. Whether it is because they know what is going to happen it puts pressure on.

Crawley and Duckett did the hard work and got out to soft dismissals.

  5. 'Pitch was slower than day one'published at 08:46 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

England bowler Ollie Robinson, who took 4-54, speaking to BT Sport: "It was a weird one, last night we felt like it nipped around quite a lot and then this afternoon it didn't do as much.

"The wicket felt a little bit slower as well so it was just biding our time really, being patient. We felt like if we put the ball in an area for long enough, the odd one was doing it so that was the plan.

"We got in a great position but Tom [Blundell] obviously batted really well.

"It was tough, the ball got really soft and just didn't do anything. We tried everything and credit to him, he played really well. There just wasn't that pace in the wicket get the edge."

On a purely tactical thing, if Broad gets going tomorrow he could get a very dangerous 40 or 50 which could be a crucial.

With a lead of 98 going into day three and the chance to bat in the far more favourable daylight conditions, England can be happy enough with their day.

It started well and they quickly reduced New Zealand to 83-5.

However, a fabulous century from Tom Blundell and 77 from Devon Conway helped the Kiwis get to within 19 runs of parity.

Now it's all set up for England - led by the nighthawk? - to flex their muscles with the bat tomorrow...

We have heard so much about the nighthawk and finally saw it in action. Chaos certainly ensued.

  11. Stumps - Eng 79-2published at 16 overs

    Lead by 98

The nighthawk has belatedly adopted the role of nightwatchman, turning down a couple of singles to protect Ollie Pope.

Scott Kuggeleijn really challenged him with some well-directed short balls but Broad survives, takes a leg bye from the last ball and that is stumps.

New Zealand really fought back with the bat but England have done enough in that last period of play under the lights to keep themselves ahead in the game.

  12. Eng 78-2published at 15 overs

    Lead by 97

Ollie Pope shoulders arms to the last ball of the over, is hit on the front pad and Tim Southee goes up with real enthusiasm. He must really like this one...

Nope. The umpire shakes his head and Southee immediately indicates to his team-mates that it was going well over the top.

We have a stoppage as Broad is hit by a bouncer from Southee. He seems to be OK but the physio is on to make sure.

The nighthawk, aka Stuart Broad, is causing chaos already!

He skies his second ball and really should be out. Kuggeleijn and Blundell both run towards it then stop, each leaving it for the other and the ball lands safely.

Crucially, that single keeps Broad on strike...
