  1. NZ 296-9published at 80.2 overs

    Trail by 29

Nearly for Anderson and England. Blundell tries to whip the ball extravagantly over mid-wicket, gets a leading edge but Stuart Broad can't quite get around to take the catch from mid-on.

It didn't look like Broad picked up the ball immediately and that brief delay was costly.

  2. new ball

New ballpublished at 06:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

England have taken the second new ball and Jimmy Anderson is ready to bowl the first over with it.

  3. NZ 296-9published at 80 overs

    Trail by 29

Blundell is having a fine time, he's got his best Test score after thumping back-to-back boundaries off Stokes and pulls a single to take the deficit below 30.

As well as being frustrated by this last-wicket stand, England's fielders are also struggling with the setting sun getting in their eyes, making it very tough to pick up the pink ball.

  4. NZ 287-9published at 79 overs

    Trail by 38

Blundell continues to defy England and gets a single fifth ball, too. Tickner sees out the last from Robinson and Blundell will be on strike to start the next over.

One more until the second new ball is available.

  5. dropped catch

Blundell dropped on 117published at 78 overs

    NZ 284-9

Big cheers as Blair Tickner fends off a short ball from Stokes and scampers through for a single, his first run in Test cricket.

Blundell then pulls for four before going for a big drive to end the over. He gets an outside edge but with no slip in place, Ben Foakes has to fling himself to his right.

The wicketkeeper gets a glove on it but can't cling on. More frustration for England.

Ben Stokes has had enough, he's bringing himself back on.

  7. NZ 278-9published at 77 overs

    Trail by 47

It's not pretty but it's another boundary for Tom Blundell. After five dot balls, a thick outside edge loops up and over slip.

New Zealand are within 50 of parity.

  8. NZ 274-9published at 76 overs

    Trail by 51

Tickner plays out a maiden from Leach but only after nearly being run out.

He pushed the ball out to point and set off for a single. Blundell was having none of it and Tickner had to turn back and gets there with a bit of help from a wayward throw.

    Trail by 51

Blundell is on the charge now!

Robinson is ramped for four and the Kiwi centurion follows that up by running at the bowler and slapping the ball back past him. Straight enough that the umpire has to duck it, top shot.

I can't remember it being mentioned, Sam, but why wouldn't they have been regulars at Edgbaston during the summers!?

Tickner reminds me of Arthur Shelby, I wonder if the Peaky Blinders were into their cricket?

Blundell keeps strike with a single, drilled out to deep mid-wicket from the last ball of Leach's over.

100 for Tom Blundellpublished at 73.3 overs

    NZ 265-9

Big cheers around the Bay Oval as Tom Blundell goes through to his fourth Test hundred!

He gets there from 143 balls with a lap sweep for two, he really sprinted that first, he made absolutely sure he was getting back for the second.

The run map shows Tom Blundell scored 100 with 1 six, 12 fours, 1 three, 10 twos, and 23 singles for New ZealandImage source, BBC Sport

Tickner survives... just! The tailender had been solid throughout the over but the last delivery from Robinson so nearly gets through him.

    Over to you, Tom Blundell...

  17. NZ 261-9published at 72.3 overs

Three balls down, three to go in the over for Tickner. He's done well so far and the home fans are cheering every delivery he survives.

    Blundell 96, Tickner 0

Tom Blundell has decided it's go time! He smashes Leach for two boundaries to end the over after nailing the third ball for six.

That puts him four away from a century but it also means number 11 Blair Tickner is on strike for the start of Ollie Robinson's over...

  20. Postpublished at 06:12 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

I was interested to see how New Zealand approached this session, they obviously want to get as close to England's first-innings total as possible.

But equally, they'll want to have a decent crack at England's top-order with the new ball under lights.

That wicket probably makes the decision for them.
