Tom 7.11, that's what everyone else is doing. Let's get behind Ben and the boys mixing the whole game up a bit. This is the new order of things. Have it!!

  2. Eng 21-0published at 4 overs

    Lead by 40

This should help Crawley settle down. Three boundaries from the Wagner over.

The first is sliced up and over backward point from a full ball, the next two are freebies.

Too short, wide and cut away with conviction each time. Just the start England would have hoped for.

  3. Eng 9-0published at 3 overs

    Lead by 28

Southee has found his rhythm quickly and is probing away, looking to expose Crawley's frailties around off stump.

He beats the edge a couple of times before the England opener flicks the last ball leg side for a single.

  4. Eng 8-0published at 2 overs

    Lead by 27

Neil Wagner shares the new ball and there is some swing for the left-armer as he bowls very full to Duckett.

Four! Full again last ball and Duckett thumps it through wide mid-off for the first boundary of the innings.

For me England need to be smart about how they go in the second innings. Could maybe try to build an innings with Crawley and Duckett and if they are at 100-0 or 100-1 then they turn on Bazball to put pressure on the Kiwis.

  6. Eng 4-0published at 1 over

    Lead by 23

Lovely shot from Ben Duckett, driving firmly through extra cover. He has to settle for three though as the fielder pulls it back just before the boundary cushion.

Very good ball to finish form Southee, drawing Crawley forward and beating the outside edge by a whisker.

  7. Eng 1-0published at 0.2 overs

    Lead by 20

England are away in their second innings as Zak Crawley nudges a single into the leg side.

No big swing yet for Southee but don't count on it staying that way.

Strap in, folks. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are back out there and Tim Southee has the new ball in hand.

England lead by 19, we've got an hour and a quarter - if we assume they'll need the extra half hour - left in the day.

Meanwhile in Delhi, Australia have lost their fourth wicket on day one of the second Test against India.

Travis Head, recalled after his shock omission in Nagpur, has been caught behind off Mohammed Shami for 12.

Earlier Steve Smith was out for a two-ball duck while David Warner made 15 and Marnus Labuschagne 18.

Usman Khawaja has hit an unbeaten half-century and Australia are 110-4.

England are not going to come out and defend. They will come out and try and put runs on the board.

Doesn't sound very Bazball to me, Tom. One thing we do know about Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum is that they don't care a jot what other people think about their approach...

We’ll learn a lot about this team tonight. Can we grind out for a 15 overs in the toughest conditions to set a platform for the next day. And if we lose 3 wickets due to brain dead cricket we shouldn’t just be able to say “that’s how we play”.

Tom Blundell played the situation with the tail so well. It is not an easy thing to do to keep the strike and score boundaries as well.

    It was a fantastic knock.

What a hundred that was. Tom Blundell has dragged New Zealand into the game and given New Zealand a great time to bowl.

It was controlled and the way Blundell manages to let the ball come to him so late all of the time, it looks so easy for him.

  15. England lead by 19 on first inningspublished at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2023

England do manage to secure a first-innings lead but it's significantly smaller than it looked like being when they reduced New Zealand to 83-5 earlier today.

Devon Conway and, in particular, Tom Blundell saw to that, while the lower-order played a part in sticking with Blundell.

Ollie Robinson took 4-54 and Jimmy Anderson 3-36 but now it's over to England's batters to face the new pink ball under the lights.

    Blundell c & b Anderson 138 (NZ 306 all out)

Straight up and Anderson takes the catch off his own bowling to wrap up the innings.

It was a fantastic innings from Blundell, he batted brilliantly and then went into T20 mode when left with the tail.

It's one big shot too many in the end though and Jimmy Anderson takes his third wicket.

As if Jimmy Anderson wasn't already irritated enough, the umpire gives runs after the ball flicks off Blundell's thigh pad and away for four.

Just waking up? England have not had it all their own way on day two. A brilliant innings from Tom Blundell is keeping New Zealand right in this match.

Things started well for Ben Stokes' side when they took two wickets in the first session to leave the Black Caps 83-5.

There was then a stand of 79 between Blundell and Devon Conway, but when Conway fell to Ben Stokes and Michael Bracewell quickly followed England were eyeing a big first-innings lead.

But Blundell has kept going in a hard-working, composed knock, putting on 53 with debutant Scott Kuggeleijn and now an unbeaten fifty stand with number 11 Blair Tickner.

England have a new ball under the lights but their first-innings lead has been whittled away.

  19. NZ 302-9published at 82 overs

    Trail by 23

Tickner not only gets through Stuart Broad's over but adds a couple more to New Zealand's total.

There was an appeal for caught behind as Broad got the ball very close to the edge but they choose not to review it.

Oh dear. UltraEdge shows there was a spike but Tickner survives. Yet more frustration for England.

Sometimes it is just your day. Tom Blundell has played superbly today, has earned a bit of luck and has just had it.

England put a fly slip in for the last ball of the Anderson over, expecting Blundell to go hard at it.

He does, the edge comes but it loops over slip, over the fly slip and away for four. That's the fifty partnership as well.
