After 11 innings without a century, Joe Root went to three figures for the first time since last July.

There was plenty of emotion in that celebration. Hopefully that'll put a stop to those of you texting and tweeting us to say he should be dropped...

    A tale of two centuries...

A nice little quirk of that Root century, it also brought up a ton for Neil Wagner.

I suppose that's not quite so nice for the bowler...

Neil Wagner's bowling in this innings: 8% full, 54% good length and 38% short. 17 overs, 1 maidens, went for 101 runs, took 0 wickets with an economy of 5.94.

And as Root celebrates his ton, the rain arrives and the umpires take the players off the field.

Let's hope they're not off for too long.

Test century number 29 for Joe Root!

What an innings it has been, he's played a more understated knock alongside Harry Brook but it's been top class.

A glorious on drive took him to 99 and after four dot balls, he clips the last ball of Wagner's over through square leg for two.

An understandably grumpy looking Tom Southee brings himself back into the attack to try and restore a bit of order.

He does just that, just a couple from the over.

Ross: Nice surprise to see that score at tea when one-year-old woke up screaming. Think he’s back asleep but I don’t want to go back to sleep yet. Something special happening...

  8. 300 runs

    Eng 307-3published at 63 overs

    Root 94, Brook 184

Joe Root has joined the (boundary) party!

After nailing a gorgeous drive back down the ground, the former England skipper decides the time is right to go back to that reverse-scoop of his and whack Wagner for four more.

    Why not?

  9. Eng 297-3published at 62 overs

The records keep tumbling, this partnership of 276 is now the highest ever for the fourth wicket at the Basin Reserve.

On top of that, Harry Brook has now gone past Vinod Kambli for the most runs scored after nine Test innings. 807 and counting...

It's time for the party tricks! Brook is across his stumps and ramps Mitchell over fine leg for six.

Who saw that coming at 21-3?!

Tom: New Zealand using Daryl Mitchell because he looks a little like Nathan 'Gary' Lyon - see if that works.

  12. Eng 289-3published at 61 overs

    Root 83, Brook 177

Brook's onslaught continues and he bludgeons Bracewell's first ball back past mid-off for four.

Meanwhile, Root continues to go merrily about his business, opening the face of the bat to add three with an elegant square drive.

  13. Eng 278-3published at 60 overs

It doesn't matter how much New Zealand spread the field, Brook is still able to find the boundary.

He starts Mitchell's latest by crashing the ball through extra cover for four before the England batters deal in singles for the rest of the over.

Tom D: Very impressive again from Brook, he plays with such skill and judgement. But I am more pleased for Root, he has to play at his own pace not force it. He is too good to mess with his technique and tempo.

If you want some context for just how good this Brook innings is, Joe Root - a man with a very strong argument to be England's greatest Test batter - has been at the other end the whole time and, as well as he has batted, has struggled to score at a run every other ball.

Brook is going at more than a run a ball, has faced 11 fewer deliveries than Root and has scored 86 more runs with 19 more fours and four more sixes.

Not a fan of these big T20-style shots in Test cricket? How about a classical straight drive, high elbow and sending the ball rocketing through mid-off for four.

Yeah, Harry Brook has got that as well.

    Root 75, Brook 159

Harry Brook goes to his highest Test score - and in some style.

Daryl Mitchell is back on, starts with three dot balls but sees his fourth walloped off a length, over long on for a big six!

It's just a shame the Ashes clashes with Wimbledon, Rich. Based on some of the shots we've seen from him lately, I reckon he's got a wicked forearm smash on him, too.

If Harry carries on this form through the Ashes summer he'll be nailed on SPOTY, and probably win Strictly, Bake Off and Love Island too!

It's been one of those days for New Zealand, at least since they took the third wicket.

Wagner has Root in bother and the leading edge looks like it is going to loop back to the bowler, only to drop just short.

A smile from Root, a grimace from Wagner. Maiden.
