  1. Recap - Anderson and Leach strikepublished at 04:59 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2023

Ben Stokes' declaration in the morning gave his side a few overs at New Zealand before lunch and James Anderson exploited bowler-friendly conditions to take two key wickets, both caught behind, to leave the Kiwis reeling at 7-2.

Anderson had Devon Conway given out on review after he feathered one while Kane Williamson was guilty of a loose shot. Ben Foakes had his third catch off Anderson when Will Young nicked off shortly after lunch.

Jack Leach backed up Anderson's impressive showing in the afternoon with three wickets of his own as England put the Kiwis under pressure. Tom Latham (35), Henry Nicholls (30) and Daryl Mitchell (13) all got starts but could not kick on.

Ollie Pope's brilliant close catch from silly mid-off was the standout moment of the day as he showed superb reactions to claim a screamer to account for Mitchell.

There was till time for Stuart Broad to have Michael Bracewell caught and bowled in the evening session, as Tim Southee (23*) counter-attacked, before the heavens opened and play was abandoned for the day.

The runs Joe Root did score today were very valuable because England did stutter a little bit.

Once they lost Harry Brook, it was all action: score as many runs as we can as quickly as we can to get bowling before lunch.

  3. Recap - Root sets up declarationpublished at 04:55 Greenwich Mean Time 25 February 2023

England resumed on 315-3 with Harry Brook having one eye on a double century, but he was only able to add two runs to his overnight score of 184 before he was caught and bowled by Matthew Henry.

That brought Ben Stokes to the crease for a cameo which featured the good, the bad and the ugly. He was dismissed after a 28-ball 27 after a filthy slash down the ground and was caught at mid-off.

Ben Foakes went for a duck after he lost his footing and there were useful contributions of 14 and 28 from Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson respectively.

All the while Joe Root mixed aggression with sensible strokeplay and when he passed 150 Stokes opted to declare on 435-8.

Mo Stewart: I left for work just before the first ball of the day. I was looking forward to watching us mop up the tail and set about another round of swashbuckling, or even make NZ follow-on. 15 minutes before I finished, the rains came. They better be coming back!

You can't do anything about the rain as a player so you just don't think about it. Then if you do get back on, great.

Rather frustratingly, the covers have now gone back on.

It'll be a good test of Ben Stokes' captaincy if he does enforce the follow-on because if there is one person who is an avid non-follow-oner it is our good friend Stuart Broad. He hates it with a passion.

So if he can persuade him to do it then he's got everything.

I think this break now might encourage them even more because if they don't get back out there tonight, they'll still be fresh having only done 40-odd overs today.

If we don't enforce the follow-on, you've got to ask has a captain ever declared in the third innings on day three of a Test match? Because he almost certainly will.

Ed (03:42), from someone who is currently up doing a night feed, I can confirm that being woken up by a little one to find out that England are still doing well is positively a pleasure.

Some mild resistance from Tim Southee and obduracy from Tom Blundell but England will back themselves to take these last few wickets.

It's how Tim Southee plays. He's hit a few bombs in his career and he's been hit for a few in this series so he'll be pleased to get a couple back.

The rain is only light, but there's not a great feeling of optimism around the Basin. It has arrived bang on time, according to the forecast. It was about this time yesterday the players went off and never returned.
