  1. NZ 41-3published at 12 overs

Stuart Broad, already a bit miffed after an edge from Latham went wide of the slip cordon and away for four, is getting frustrated by the foot marks now.

It looks relatively damp out there and so a bit more sawdust is required.

The last 40-year-old pace bowler to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket was the great Sydney Barnes, 109 years ago. Jimmy on track to match him.

Grayson: Jimmy Anderson is ridiculous. To be doing what he’s doing at 40 years of age is phenomenal and setting a precedent for future generation.

James Anderson's bowling in this innings: 0% full, 78% good length and 22% short. 6 overs, 1 maidens, went for 21 runs, took 3 wickets with an economy of 3.50.

Henry Nicholls has started very well here. He nails a drive through mid on for his second boundary.

Then, later in the Anderson over, flicks the ball off his hip and he must have middled it because it runs all the way to the boundary cushion.

Great work, Duncan. Someone had to make the 'Evergreen' gag and I was starting to worry it might have to be me.

Duncan Hamilton: The 'Evergreen' Jimmy Anderson taking Will Young's wicket. Poetic.

  7. NZ 25-3published at 10 overs

Maiden over from Broad to Latham and there is still plenty happening out there for the seamers.

Broad beats the edge with one that nips away from the left-hander. We've seen that one before.

Wayne Ellis: Going early here, but I don’t think New Zealand’s recovery from 21-3 is going to be quite as impressive.

  9. NZ 25-3published at 9 overs

Just as England did, New Zealand slip to 21-3 early in their innings. They simply need a 300-run partnership now and all will be well.

Henry Nicholls gets the first four of them confidently enough, thumping a back of a length delivery from Anderson through point.

    Nicely played.

Moose: Nothing feels longer than a Test match lunch break at midnight!

James Anderson's spell after lunch looks to have made it worthwhile so far, Moose.

Here's that Anderson to Young field I mentioned. No one in front of square on the off side. It worked, too.

    Young c Foakes b Anderson 2 (NZ 21-3)

He doesn't get older, he just gets better!

Jimmy Anderson has his third. Immaculate line and length, Will Young presses forward and the merest hint of seam movement is enough to take the shoulder of the bat.

A feather of an edge through to Ben Foakes.

Lamb for lunch in the press room. I had three lots. Quite full now.

  15. NZ 21-2published at 8 overs

Nine from the first over after lunch, New Zealand will be happy with that.

England won't have been too disappointed to see Latham driving at balls outside off, though.

Jimmy Anderson will continue from the other end.

James Anderson bowled that little bit fuller to get things rolling before lunch. Kane Williamson will be disappointed with his dismissal. It was a little bit of a waft. He didn't commit and not what you expect from a player of his quality. That's what pressure does, and England will look to put more on in the afternoon.

Lovely shot from Tom Latham. He stands up tall and punches Broad through the covers for four.

Good, positive intent from the Black Caps to start the session.

England will have a pretty hard ball to go with after lunch having got their two best batters out already. They might have liked a few more runs but the declaration moved the game on and set that up.

The players are heading back out to the middle. Ready?

I think we could be in for another exciting session.

(As predictions go, it's not the boldest in this Bazball era, I admit.)
