Ben Stokes might bring himself on to bowl after everyone else has had their go. It looks a really good cricket wicket - turn, bounce and you can make runs on it.

My second child arrived yesterday. He’s staying at hospital overnight with his mum. My oldest has thrown up several times and I’ve had to change him and his bedding twice. On the plus side, I can watch Jimmy Anderson at work.

Good first over back from Anderson, challenging Blundell consistently around off stump.

The Kiwi wicketkeeper-bat is up to the challenge, though, and when the bowler overpitches, drives firmly through mid-off for four.

Adam Davies: Two batters getting out on a greentop to a reverse sweep. That's England away that. Just not how we know it!

  5. NZ 80-5published at 27 overs

Leach rattles through a maiden to Mitchell. We're barely halfway through day two but there is already turn and bounce for the spinner.

We're going to get a bowling change at the other end, Jimmy Anderson is back to replace Robinson.

The stadium DJ is pulling out all the stops in a bid to lift the spirits of the home fans at the Basin Reserve.

Leach has got the two wickets but he owes a lot to the miserly Ollie Robinson.

He has bowled with remarkable skill and control, conceding just six from his eight overs.

On settee at folks' place debating how fast Test cricket has changed. Different era says mum. It wasn't like this two years ago I reply, so what's less than an era? New chapter? New page? At this pace, we're talking new paragraphs.

It's Mitchell and Blundell time again. Can England break this partnership who frustrated them so often last summer?

New Zealand are already in big trouble, lose either of these two cheaply and we may have to ramp up the follow-on chat.

Another reverse sweep, another wicket for Jack Leach!

Henry Nicholls had played so well but that is a a bit of a giveaway. He'd been nailing the conventional sweep but makes a mess of the reverse.

The ball comes off the top edge and bounces off his body to Ollie Pope at short leg. It's a very good, one-handed catch.

Mitchell is batting well out of his crease to try and negate the lateral movement that Robinson is finding but going by the last couple of balls of the over, it will only help him so much.

The fifth ball jags away to beat the edge before the sixth nips back to hit high on the pad as the batter shouldered arms. Good stuff from Robinson.

Ollie Robinson's bowling in this innings: 0% full, 93% good length and 7% short. 7 overs, 4 maidens, went for 4 runs, took 0 wickets with an economy of 0.57.

England have been disciplined with the ball. They've been relentless, which is the opposite of what New Zealand's attack were. England will need more of that over the next hour.

Henry Nicholls has decided his best option is to get the broom out and sweep Leach.

He does so twice to great effect, finding the boundary on each occasion. Two very sweetly timed shots from the left-hander.

During the drinks break, all of the England players had the bottom of their spikes cleaned by sub fielders Matthew Potts and Olly Stone. Literally lifting their feet up like a horse having its shoe seen to. Something about thoroughbreds, show ponies. You get the idea.

England have had two reviews out of five overturned in this series. New Zealand just one out of nine.

Robinson continues to probe as he goes in search of what would be a thoroughly deserved first wicket of the match.

No joy this time around, just a single from the over.

While Latham stews over that decision back in the dressing room, Daryl Mitchell comes out and thumps his first ball back past Leach for four.

Just to add to the debate around that Latham wicket, if the arm guard covers the glove then it becomes part of the glove according to the laws of the game...

Some boos from the home fans inside the Basin after that decision. Is Latham unlucky? Probably, but it was given out on the field and the pictures made it hard to overturn. It was a pretty ropey shot given how he had battled.

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 20.2 overs

    Latham c Root b Leach 35 (NZ 60-4)

Aleem Dar says it just flicked the top of the glove, Tom Latham is distinctly unimpressed but he has to go.

It was an attempted reverse sweep and it is so close as to whether it hit glove or arm guard first. There may have been an overlap between the two.

Either way, England have their breakthrough and it's a wicket for Jack Leach. It was given out on the field which probably made all the difference.

This is going to be interesting. It's very close to the glove but might it have hit slightly above it?

Good luck to the third umpire.
