This is a really vital partnership now between Williamson and Blundell. Williamson is doing what he does and accumulating but these two now need to really build this lead.

Of course, the man who started this discussion of who your favourite New Zealand cricketer of all-time is, is Kane Williamson.

The former Black Caps skipper overtook Ross Taylor to become New Zealand's record Test run-scorer in the morning session.

His celebration was that of a man who knew he still had plenty of work to do and he has done just that, reaching lunch unbeaten on 63.

Back to first half of the 80s primarily, big hitting Lance Cairns, father of Chris. Boy could he whack 'em.

It really is a remarkable story, Mark. Fantastic to hear that Andrew is back playing now!

Favourite Kiwi cricketer? Andrew Hazeldine, a left-arm quickie who has played for the Black Caps' B Team. He recovered from serious cancer (non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma) two years ago to resume his first-class career with Canterbury and now Otago - a remarkable story. (In the interests of disclosure, Andrew's my nephew, but that doesn't diminish his achievement!).

So England need to let New Zealand score another 99 runs to give themselves a shot at another record - and one that has stood for more than a century as well.

Maybe best not to let them know as I fancy that might appeal to them!

It feels like a good time to mention the highest total ever made to win a Test by a team that enforced the follow-on is 198. That was in 1911.

Thanks, Tim. I'm with you on that session - honours even.

With New Zealand looking like they want to up the ante from one end, while Williamson accumulates nicely at the other, we could be in for a cracking afternoon session.

England still on top but the home side have the chance to make things trickier for them.

Equals pequals you would have to say at the end of the morning session. A lot depends on Kane Williamson, I think.

Right, I'm going to grab a quick bite myself. Bit of cheese and crackers, I reckon. Sam Drury will guide you through the lunch break and beyond.

  10. Lunch - NZ lead by 99 runspublished at 00:03 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2023

Tom Blundell misses a pull off Ollie Robinson's last ball, leading to a gasp from Ben Foakes. Blundell chuckles to himself.

    That's lunch.

  11. NZ 325-5published at 112.3 overs

Wise heads Tom Blundell and Kane Williamson burn an extra minute or two ensure Ollie Robinson's over will be the last before lunch.

Blundell takes on a couple of short ones on the pull, but picks out the fielder behind square. Williamson comes down for a word.

Far fewer Newcaslte shirts on the banks today compared to yesterday! Interestingly there are more Sunderland shirts today. Enjoying the misfortune of their rivals across the Tyne!

Next ball and Tom Blundell clips Jack Leach for four as he pierces the field.

Two balls later and Blundell uses his feet to drill one straight down the ground. Leach sticks out a hand, with Kane Williamson out of his ground, but the deflection misses the stumps at the non-striker's end and races away for four.

Typically English response (by some) to a record of 10 wins in 11 Tests but then heaven forfend that NZ attempt to make a game of it... Don't throw the Bazball out with the bath water!

Jack Leach is thrown the ball. Can he winkle one out with his winklepickers before the break? Tom Blundell blocks his first ball.

Ron: Best Kiwi cricketer - Stephen Fleming. That cover drive was glorious. Kane is a close second mind.

  17. NZ 315-5published at 111 overs

Ollie Robinson drops his third ball in short into Kane Williamson who rocks on the back foot and pulls him square. That's not entirely convincing from the New Zealand batter - he's neither found the middle, nor the boundary.

A couple of balls later and Tom Blundell gets a good stride in as he drives elegantly through the covers for four. Shot of the day.

  18. NZ 306-5published at 110 overs

Kane Williamson happy to see out the rest of Stuart Broad's over. A few effort balls in there from the experienced Nottinghamshire pace bowler.

Around 10 minutes to lunch. Can England nip out one more before the interval?

I loved Jacob Oram and Scott Styris. Absolute workhorse all-rounders.

Much more convincing from Tom Blundell as he leans into a drive to a full ball from Stuart Broad, who, somewhat optimistically, chunters "catch it" to Ollie Robinson at short mid-on. Blundell picks up three for that.
