Favourite Kiwi is Tim Southee, a bit like a poor man’s Stuart Broad, great bowler, handy with the bat and always gives it his all.

I don't understand all the hate towards England enforcing the follow on. NZ are effectively 71-5...

    Alex

(Mark 22.32) Disaster?? Following on? It was all they really could do if they wanted to remain aggressive. They are not here to draw Test matches. They want to win.

  4. NZ 299-5published at 108.4 overs

Ollie Robinson draws an edge from Tom Blundell, who plays the ball with soft hands. Zak Crawley's diving stop at second slip prevents the boundary.

  5. NZ 298-5published at 108.3 overs

Stephan, as you may know, is a wicketkeeper... Part of the same union, and all that.

Ollie Robinson challenging Tom Blundell outside his off stump. The Kiwi batter looks much more nervous than his predecessor.

Huge assist to Ben Foakes for that last wicket. It just goes to show how important the keeper can be, even if he isn't involved in the dismissal.

Scott McCarthy: My favourite Kiwi cricketer is John Wright, Derbyshire longest-serving overseas player. He'd the gift of knowing when to attack and when to defend. An amazing 96 against the West Indies in 1980 and a century partnership when Derbyshire won the NatWest Trophy in 1981.

  8. NZ 297-5published at 108 overs

    Lead by 71 runs

Yes, Mark. Good bowling brings about batter error.

Stuart Broad finishes his over with a rasping delivery which strikes Tom Blundell near the box as he attempts to work it to leg.

Just over 20 minutes to lunch.

Mark Burt: Bit of genius cricket there. Best wicketkeeper in the world comes up to the stumps, Mitchell forced to change his position, perfect short ball from Broad.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 107.3 overs

    Mitchell c Root b Broad 54 (NZ 297-4)

A bit of a brain fade from Daryl Mitchell.

Ben Foakes stands up at the stumps to Stuart Broad, who bangs it in the deck and Mitchell loses his composure, as well as his balance in the crease.

The Kiwi batter takes on the hook and ends up skying it to Joe Root behind square who gratefully takes a comfortable catch.

Cheers from the England fans at the Basin Reserve. Another wicket and the momentum is with the tourists.

Mark Hollings: Ben Stokes has got most things right as captain. But enforcing the follow-on has proven to be an absolute disaster. Never do it again!

  12. 50 runs

Fifty for Williamsonpublished at 23:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2023

It's taken 148 balls and the best part of four hours but Kane Williamson has his half-century thanks after working the last ball from Jack Leach's over.

    Real graft from the Kiwi.

The run map shows Kane Williamson scored 50 with 3 fours, 1 three, 7 twos, and 21 singles for New Zealand

This Test is a good pre Ashes run-out to remind us that we aren't quite there yet. I think it probably confirms Bairstow back for Crawley, Archer or Wood are needed in as a very hostile option, and Jack Leach just isn't quite the option we need out of our spinner.

Kane Williamson now gets his chance to bring up fifty from the last three balls of this Jack Leach over. He nails the first one straight to the fielder, though.

    That's a half-century for Daryl Mitchell off 52 balls.

The run map shows Daryl Mitchell scored 54 with 1 six, 5 fours, 3 threes, 5 twos, and 9 singles for New Zealand

    NZ 290-4published at 106.2 overs

Daryl Mitchell dances down the pitch to Jack Leach and wallops the England left-arm spinner back over his head and into the stands for six.

    That got the full treatment.

Nigel Jones: Favourite NZ cricketer - Brendon McCullum. Not just because of his current role. He brought the same attitude to NZ cricket when he was captain. A positive force for the game.

  18. NZ 284-4published at 106 overs

At least not in the men's game, Jeff.

Meanwhile, more histrionics from Stuart Broad at the Basin Reserve. Daryl Mitchell's defensive push to Broad's sparring partner James Anderson at mid-off hangs in the air but the latter's dive forward is in vain. He could not quite get his hands to it.

  20. NZ 281-4published at 105 overs

Jack Leach, who has 2-88, continues to plug away at the other end. Kane Williamson backs way to give himself some room and then cuts the final ball of Leach's over to add a couple more.

He is one run away from a half-century now.

Jack Leach's bowling in this innings: 10% full, 88% good length and 1% short. 39 overs, 8 maidens, went for 88 runs, took 2 wickets with an economy of 2.26.
