England need 48 runs to win

Broad steps away again and cuts the ball into a gap on the off side. The sense of chaos he brings to the crease is mesmerising.

Matt Henry responds with an absolute beauty that beats Ben Foakes all ends up but just misses his outside edge.

  2. Eng 209-7published at 59.1 overs

    I'm sure he meant that.

Stuart Broad steps away to give himself room and top-edges over the wicketkeeper's head for four.

    49 now needed to win.

Patrick Brennan: Perhaps this could be a fairytale ending for Neil Wagner...

  4. Eng 205-7published at 59 overs

    England need 53 to win

Wagner's short delivery is causing England all sorts of problems.

Stuart Broad, predictably, plays two violent pulls from his first two balls that both fall short of the fielder and England can run singles.

In-between Ben Foakes plays a nervous pull that lands just short of short backward square.

    Tense stuff.

That was a magnificent innings from Root but that was not the greatest shot. He knew straight away as well and was shaking his head as he walked off.

Anyway, you all know who is in next...

    Neil Wagner does it again!!

He goes over the wicket to Joe Root and bangs it in short again, with Root making a complete has of his pull shot and looping the ball up in the air into the hands of Michael Bracewell at mid-wicket.

Wagner has turned the match on its head!

  9. Eng 202-6published at 58 overs

England need 56 runs to win

Joe Root attempts the reverse scoop but misses the shot and Tom Blundell, standing up to Matt Henry, makes a smart stop to prevent the ball running away for byes.

You can hear the New Zealand fielders chattering away around the England batters. They sense an opening here.

This is like Guardians of the Galaxy or some Marvel Comic fantasy. The chief Superhero we thought would save the day was wiped out early in the plot - but we now know his cohorts are a team, and they will save the day. Even if one of these two fail, we know that their friends will step up, in the last over if need be.

Well, that has livened things up a bit.

England still need 57 to win, but their tail is now creeping into New Zealand's view.

We could be in grandstand finish territory here.

No! There is nothing on Ultra Edge so Foakes survives.

    Here we go!

Neil Wagner is pumped up as he bangs in another bounce to new batter Ben Foakes - but has he feathered through to the wicketkeeper attempting a pull?

    New Zealand send it upstairs.

    This could be huge.

Neil Wagner DOES provide a moment of inspiration!

It is a short ball that lures Ben Stokes into an attempted pull, but he makes a bit of a mess of it - likely because he cannot put much weight on that back leg - and he ends up top-edging the ball into the sky and Tom Latham pouches the catch.

    Game. On.

Matt Henry is being mighty miserly this spell. He is denied a second successive maiden though when Joe Root clips the last delivery off his pads for a single to bring up the England 200.

The victory target is looming into view and New Zealand respond by bringing Neil Wagner into the attack. They need a moment of inspiration, can he provide it?

There's plenty of oohs and ahhs as Michael Bracewell gets some turn outside Ben Stokes' off stump. When Bracewell strays a little straighter Stokes is able to nudge the ball into the on side for a single.

Two runs could have been on there in normal times, but not in Stokes' current condition.

A century from Root would see him overtake a certain DG Bradman for Test hundreds. That would be quite nice to see, wouldn't it?

New Zealand have been sharp in the field today and Daryl Mitchell has to be alert at short fine leg to make a diving stop to deny Joe Root some runs and ensure another maiden for Matt Henry.

The former skipper is nine away from a century. The current captain, on one-and-a-half legs, is 32 from 109.
