That was a fascinating session. New Zealand really started with purpose to put England under pressure, dismissing Ollie Robinson and Ben Duckett early.

Ollie Pope then fell for a scratchy 14, before that horrendous mix-up between Joe Root and Harry Brook saw the latter run out without facing a ball and left England in a real hole at 80-5.

Credit to Root though, he has put that error behind him to make a fine run-a-ball 74, including a couple of hefty sixes off Michael Bracewell.

At the other end Ben Stokes, so often England's hero, is doggedly playing the support role, resisting the urge to play any loose shots to nudge to 20 from 75 balls.

Who said Bazball is about reckless slogging?

Favourite moment has to be Harry Brook... taking a Test wicket. From the polite plea to the umpire, to the semi-disbelief yet fully trusting captain, ending with scenes of infectious incredulity that it was one of his trundlers that made the breakthrough. Priceless!

    Fookesy, Sussex.

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

While Joe Root is in there Ben Stokes is just going to make sure he is there with him. If Root gets out then he will take over the run scoring.

England will win the game if Stokes is there at the end and he has a great history of doing that.

Thanks, Sam. You go for a much-deserved rest.

Don't be long, though. This match is set up for a thrilling finish.

Kinda getting used to that with this England team aren't we?

After all that excitement, I'm in need of a brew and a brief lie down!

To take you through the lunch break and what I would expect to be the last session of the match, it's over to our man for the big moments, Tom Mallows.

    Target 258

Just a single from Southee's over and that is lunch. Another fascinating session.

England were in all sorts of bother at 80-5 when Harry Brook was run out without facing a ball.

However, since then Joe Root has batted beautifully alongside Ben Stokes.

England need 90 more runs to win, New Zealand need five wickets. It's still anybody's game!

banhambtfc: Has to be Harry Brook's 150 in this game. What a joy he’s been to watch. Or watching Jimmy and Broad picking up 1000 Test wickets together. Bring on the Ashes and the ODI on Wednesday.

Root is toying with Bracewell now. Following up the maximum with a clever paddle sweep that is just out of reach of the backward short leg fielder and runs away for four.

A single follows before Bracewell gets a couple to turn big away from Stokes.

It's quite clear who England want on strike to face the off-spinner.

    Need another 96 to win

Root is on the charge and lifts Bracewell over long on for six! Timed beautifully.

England's runs required dips into double figures...

  12. Eng 156-5published at 42 overs

    Target 258

Root keeps trying to play that late cut he loves so much - and plays so well.

There is an element of risk to it, a bit of variable bounce and he could be done for, but it takes two good stops to deny him boundary.

A wider ball from Southee allows him to play a firmer cut. Out to deep point for one.

I have to say, I think Rawalpindi would have to be my favourite. What a Test match and what a moment when England finally took the winning wicket.

Ben: That last wicket of the first Test v Pakistan has got to be the highlight. Pure joy, pure theatre, pure sport.

Nick The Unit: My favourite moment of England's winter of Test cricket has to be first Test win against Pakistan at Rawalpindi. Went hard for five days, winning with minutes to spare.

  15. Eng 155-5published at 41 overs

    Target 258

Ben Stokes does not look in a good way. He appears to twist his knee after playing a cut shot to the first ball of Bracewell's over.

He's not moved comfortably since but still manages to thrash a long-hop through the covers for four.

Something to keep an eye on.

Nicholas: My favourite moment of England's Test winter has got to be the 500 in a day at Rawalpindi. Utterly mad and I'm still not really sure how it actually happened.

  18. Eng 151-5published at 40 overs

    Stokes 16, Root 61

Root opens the face to run the ball past gully for a couple but Southee adjusts his line and forces the batter to defend the rest of the over.

A little over 15 minutes left in the session. This game is still incredibly delicately poised.

  19. Eng 149-5published at 39 overs

    Need another 109 to win

Root is able to play a couple of attacking shots in the over: pulling a short ball and then a reverse sweep.

On each occasion he has to settle for a single, though, with plenty of fielders patrolling the boundary for New Zealand.
