  1. Eng 146-5published at 38 overs

    Target 258

Root and Stokes are happy to work in singles against Southee for now.

They take three of them from the over, leaving Root on strike to face Bracewell. Can he stay on strike long enough to get after the spinner this time?

  2. Eng 143-5published at 37 overs

    Target 258

Stokes is showing remarkable restraint and control so far against Bracewell.

No doubt he wants to go at the spinner but, as it stands, he doesn't see it as a worthwhile risk. Maiden.

8.30pm here in Brazil. Was going out but not sure I can take my eyes off my screen.

    Thomas

What a quandary: some much-needed sleep before a day on the Wilder Kaiser ski slopes or following the BBC cricket blog?... Like Tattz at 00.15 (Austrian time) I'm excited rather than nervous!

So England winning at about 9pm then. Great!

Southee continues and gets Stokes to push at a delivery wide of off. There's a thick edge from the England captain but it goes wide of the slips.

The ball runs down to third but a good diving stop prevents a boundary. Good running means Stokes gets three though.

Another tidy over from Bracewell as Root gets a single first ball again, leaving Stokes to work his way through the next five.

With England needing another 120 to win, they would need 24 more overs to win if they went at fives, Frank.

So a bit more than half an hour to lunch, plus another hour and a quarter afterwards. What's that? Around 02:00 GMT?

Lots of big ifs and buts in there, mind.

Frank Maguire: Clever people on live text / BBC towers - if we tick over at five runs an over, what time would we win if we make it to the target factoring in lunch etc? Debating a quick nap and setting an alarm…

  8. Eng 138-5published at 34 overs

Stokes blocks the delivery from Southee and that's over.

How will New Zealand cope now, a bowler down? Could mean Daryl Mitchell is called into action to help Southee, Wagner and Bracewell.

It looks like that could be that for Matt Henry, at least for the time being.

He walks off with the physio and Southee will complete the over. Just one ball remaining.

A big blow for the Black Caps.

Concern for New Zealand as Matt Henry goes down holding his back. He initially tried to stretch it out but the physio has to come out to tend to him.

Tim Southee takes the opportunity for a little stretch of his own.

Root is clearly going to try and take Bracewell down but after skewing the first ball for a single, it's over to Stokes.

The off-spinner is turning it away from the left-hander, there is plenty of turn so it won't be so easy for Stokes to attack.

In fact, he decides to take a more cautious approach, no further runs from the over.

Tattz: It's a sign of how good England have been for so long, that I'm simply not used to feeling this nervous about an England run chase. NZ bang on it as well this morning. Such a good game this.

michael: Fabulous that Ben Stokes has needlessly made this into an exciting match.

GardinerLDN: They just need to continue to be positive and do what has consistently worked for the last 12 Tests! A quick 40 completely changes momentum again! That’s how this teams thinks and we love it!

Michael Bracewell is coming back into the attack. He's changed ends after being taken for 17 in his one over earlier in the day.

  14. Eng 134-5published at 32 overs

    Target 258

Stokes sees width from Henry and decides to go after it. A booming drive attempted, an edge found but the ball goes just over the outstretched hand of Bracewell at third slip.

    Four more. They all count.

Short, wide and cut away behind square for four. If Root could've hand picked a delivery to take him to his half-century, that would've been it.

Effortlessly put away. A run-a-ball fifty for the former England skipper.

The run map shows Joe Root scored 51 with 1 six, 6 fours, 6 twos, and 9 singles for England

Every run is valuable at this stage so Root is grateful for a wide half-volley from Wagner that he drives elegantly through the covers for four.

Another single and he'll keep strike once more.

Joe Root just keeps ticking over, clipping Henry through the leg side for two.

Even he is not finding it easy, though. Henry finds the ideal line and length, finds the edge but it falls short of second slip.

That's happened a few times today and now the slips take a pace or two closer to the stumps.

Root turns the ball off his hip for a single to keep strike.

How is everyone doing? You can't keep your eyes off the action so far in this session!

Ben Stokes playing the Jack Leach role here?

    Connor in Glasgow

This is just setting it all up for a Ben Stokes heroics special. He always starts really slowly when he does these amazing innings... plays himself in then when we need seven an over to win before the close he will go ballistic. You heard it here first.

Lovely shot. Too wide from Wagner and Root nails a square drive away to the fence.
