Wow. What a delivery from Henry.

A short ball but it just keeps rising, takes the edge of Stokes' bat before flicking off the fingertips of Blundell's gloves and going over the slips for four.

There is still plenty in this pitch and not much more Stokes could've done with that ball.

This is why Test cricket is such a wonderful game.

We all had England as quite heavy favourites before start of play but an hour and 15 minutes in and New Zealand have found a way to change that.

The Bracewell spell ends after one 17-run over. We're back to seam as Matt Henry returns to the attack.

Interesting that Joe Root is really targeting the leg side today. No unfurling of the hands through the off side.

The run map shows Joe Root scored 32 with 1 six, 3 fours, 5 twos, and 4 singles for England

Eng need another 151 runs to win

New Zealand could barely have dreamt of a better start to day five, four wickets before drinks including the big one of Harry Brook - who they didn't even need to bowl a ball to!

Joe Root and Ben Stokes are trying to rectify the situation for England and look set to attack the spin of Michael Bracewell. It's all about risk and reward again...

  6. Eng 107-5published at 27 overs

    Target 258

Neil Wagner does his bit to help calm everybody down after the chaos of that Bracewell over.

No, I know, that doesn't sound very Wagner but it's true.

Just a single to Root from the over before an edge from Stokes falls just short of slip to end the over. Time for drinks.

  7. Eng 106-5published at 26 overs

    Target 258

After being swept, Bracewell drops short and Root pulls the ball away for four more!

Short again and Bracewell is saved by Root's shot bouncing off Tom Latham at short leg - painful for Latham but he's saved three runs.

Big turn away from Stokes to finish the over. Is that enough for Southee to stick with him?

  8. 6 runs

    Eng 101-5published at 25.3 overs

OK, here we go! After gloving an attempted sweep over the wicketkeeper's head first up and getting a fortuitous two, Root skips down and plants the next one over long on for six!

Now a hard sweep, four more and that brings up the 100 for England.

    Pressure on Bracewell early.

  9. Eng 89-5published at 25 overs

    Target 258

Three singles, including a first run for Stokes, from Wagner's over as England try to calm things down a bit.

We're about to see spin for the first time this morning, Michael Bracewell is coming on to bowl.

80-5 isn't ideal, but I've heard the fella at the crease can bat a bit. Ben Stokes lives for situations like this.

    James from Manchester

Joe Root will be really fired up to compensate for that run-out. This isn't over yet.

Stokes is yet to get off the mark as he plays out another maiden from Southee.

It's not what we've seen from him too much as skipper but we know he's more than capable of soaking up pressure for long spells before counter-attacking.

  12. Eng 86-5published at 23 overs

    Target 258

Joe Root, perhaps feeling he has a duty to make amends for his not insignificant part in the Harry Brook run out, clips Wagner through mid-wicket nicely for two.

The Kiwi left-armer is making things happen, though, and finds the edge a couple of balls later.

It goes at a catchable height but thankfully for Root and England, it is in the gap and away for four.

I’m not really that concerned if England lose - even as an England supporter. I’m just glad they didn’t bat New Zealand out of it and we all have to watch a fifth day batting dull fest on a batting wicket. At least now all results still possible.

    Stevo, Cheltenham

In reply to Greg’s earlier comment (22:01)…. I say fortune favours the brave. If you dig in for 100 overs, the good ball will come along and getcha. Carry on England.

Ben Stokes is in with England in a hole of their own making. They need another 178 to win and only five wickets remaining.

Zak Crawley gets a lot of stick but you'd say he is the only batter in this second innings who could claim to have been done by a good ball.

This game is impossible to predict. Full credit to New Zealand for the way they have taken to the field today, but I have no idea what was going on there between Root and Brook.

I think the blame has to be on Root's shoulders, that was a big misjudgement.

What on earth is going on!?! Harry Brook is run out without facing a ball.

Joe Root dabs the ball, trying to find the gap between the slips, and although Michael Bracewell moves to his right to stop it, both batters set off for a single.

You can only assume that Root called for it but why Brook didn't say 'no', I have no idea!

There was never a run there and Brook is barely in shot as Blundell breaks the stumps.

Oh. England are in a bit of trouble now.

Pope tries to cut, gets a thick edge and the ball goes quickly to Tom Latham at second slip.

Good catch and Neil Wagner roars in celebration.

  18. Eng 80-3published at 20.3 overs

That angle from around the wicket ends up working against Wagner when he drops too short, the ball bounces up invitingly for Pope to pull it away in front of square.

    Four runs.

Just a single from Southee's over.

The New Zealand skipper has started very well today, offering the England batters very little.

Blundell is still up to the stumps for Root, keeping the England man firmly in his crease.
