  1. SA 56-0published at 8 overs

Archer's speeds have been around 84mph to 88mph so far. Obviously not his quickest as he finds his way in this comeback but decent.

Moeen Ali is going to have an early bowl.

Grace Scrivens has won the toss and the England captain has opted to bat first in the Women's U19 World Cup semi-final against Australia.

India are waiting to play the winners in Sunday's final. England have won every game so far in the 20-over tournament, while Australia have lost just once.

Play starts at 11:45 GMT. Keep up-to-date with the action from Potchefstroom here.

  3. SA 51-0published at 7 overs

The South Africa fifty is up after just seven overs as Bavuma beautifully whips a leg-stump half-volley from David Willey between two fielders. Shaun Pollock is suggesting on the TV commentary that England's bowling has been a bit inconsistent. I wouldn't disagree although there's nothing in this pitch for the bowlers.

    Archer continues...

Six but not where Bavuma played it! He's got away with this big time, top-edging Archer's bouncer over the slips.

Archer's first three overs have gone for 26.

  5. SA 36-0published at 5.3 overs

Shot! Temba Bavuma pulls Jofra Archer's feared bouncer - that said it doesn't take much to bounce little Temba - from in front of his grille.

    Four runs.

The England trumpeter bursts into a rendition of The Great Escape. It hasn't got that bad just yet.

As ever your thoughts and contributions are welcome. Any news? Predictions for the year? Let me know.

  7. SA 31-0published at 4.4 overs

Another drive from Quinton de Kock. There's no stopping this one either.

I think England have read this script before...

  8. SA 26-0published at 4 overs

    De Kock 14, Bavuma 11

Archer has gained a fluffy beard on his chin in his time away and some beads in the back of his braided hair. I'm a fan.

Another beauty of a drive from Quinton de Kock ends his second over with a boundary. A decent start for South Africa.

  9. SA 18-0published at 3 overs

It's not too long ago England's white-ball team were playing at the huge MCG in front of an ear-splitting, Pakistan-supporting crowd. This is a very different feel. This is a game being played in front of grassy banks in front of a small crowd in South Africa.

Bavuma flicks a three through the slow outfield.

  10. SA 9-0published at 2 overs

    De Kock 8, Bavuma 1

Lovely from Quinton de Kock, welcoming Archer back by driving him back past the stumps to the boundary.

Archer didn't do a lot wrong in that over. The pace is decent, that fearsome action still the same.

  11. SA 5-0published at 1.1 overs

On the money to start from Jofra Archer, nibbling the ball on a good length at 87mph.

It's just so good to see him back in an England shirt.

  13. SA 4-0published at 1 over

A decent start on a seemingly slow pitch is ruined by a wide delivery from David Willey and some dodgy fielding from Jason Roy.

Quinton de Kock slaps the first four of the day.

  14. SA 0-0published at 0.3 overs

Jerusalem echoes around this leafy ground in Bloemfontein. How do those guys get so many days off work?

It's January too. Maybe the flights were a Christmas present.

  15. SA 0-0published at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Jos Buttler is going to wait just a little longer to see Jofra Archer back with ball in hand because David Willey is going to bowl the first over.

The dangerous Quinton de Kock is on strike.

Here we go then for 2023...

Trying to pick England's XI for the first game of the World Cup is actually trickier than you'd think.

Jonny Bairstow will, hopefully, be back. You'd expect Joe Root to be in too.

What about Liam Livingstone? If he plays, how do you get Harry Brook in? And should Ben Stokes come out of ODI retirement to play?

All of these issues need to be decided over the next nine months.

  18. World Cup qualification on the line for South Africapublished at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

This series is crucial for South Africa too.

They are currently 11th in the World Cup Super League standings.

"What's that? I hear you ask..."

Well... you need to finish in the top eight to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup this winter.

South Africa have five matches left - three against England and two against Netherlands. They need three wins to stay in contention.

  19. Archer at 80% as he makes his comebackpublished at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

It is 678 days - almost two years - since Jofra Archer last played for England.

He has had two elbow operations and a back stress fracture since then.

Archer made his comeback to competitive cricket in the SA20 earlier this month and did pretty well. Today is another landmark on his comeback journey.

He reckons he's at about 80% of his best form.

"It's just been good to play cricket and actually not have to worry about if my body's going to give way," he said.
