England captain Jos Buttler: "We were actually going to bowl. It looks a really good surface but we fancied a chase.

"It means a lot, we don't actually have very many games before the World Cup so every game is vital for us in preparation for that. We have three games here, three games in Bangladesh in March and then nothing until September. So these are crucial games for us.

"Little bit of refocusing into the 50-over format, just that mental shift back into 50-over cricket and how we want to play our cricket.

"Really exciting that Jofra is back in an England shirt. He plays today which is great for him most of all. Harry Brook is going to make his debut today - a really exciting player who has excelled in all formats."

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma: "It looks a good wicket, runs on the board in the first game of the series.

"It's a unique set of circumstances that both sides find themselves in. We got together yesterday, one day or prep and we're trying to prepare ourselves as best as we can for the series. We knew it was going to be like this, we've just got to get on with it and try to play our best cricket.

"Mentally, we know what is at stake. We've had a lot of conversations, we know that this is a big World Cup year. We're trying to collect as many points as we can but we're also trying to find our way and how we want to go about things. This three-match series is an opportunity to do that."
