Nadine de Klerk gets the breakthrough! We have the first wicket of the 2023 World Cup!

It was a fuller ball by de Klerk and Harshitha Madavi hits it straight to into Tazmin Brits' hands at mid-wicket.

    In comes Vishmi Gunaratne...

I am pleased that Sri Lanka haven't lost any wickets.

I'm surprised that Chamari Atapattu has been so tentative. I spoke to her a few days ago and she said she feels like she can play with freedom now because of the young players around her in the squad.

It was controversial to leave Dane van Niekerk out. For me, the bottom line is, they are a worse team without her in.

She is leader and she galvanises the girls. However I can understand where Cricket South Africa are coming from, they will feel like they behind the rest of the world when it comes to fitness.

I would have her in my side any day though.

South Africa's Dane van Niekerk, speaking on Sky Sports. She is commentating after failing to meet the required fitness to play in the competition: "Bittersweet, I would love to be out there. What an occassion, with this packed stadium, I wish I could experience it out there."

Back-to-back boundaries to start left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba's over.

She gets the length wrong in the first two balls and Chamari Atapattu isn't missing out, she hits both balls to backward square leg for a boundary.

It's the end of the powerplay and Sri Lanka are picking up the pace.

It has been on the slow side so far. These two are their best batters and without losing a wicket they will feel like they are giving themselves a chance.

Eight an over from here would get them to 138 and that would give them a chance. These two would have to bat for the majority of the innings to get them to that.

A great scoop shot from Harshitha Madavi to get another boundary straight behind the wicketkeeper.

These two are really struggling to time the ball. Chamari Atapattu is always trying to hit the ball too hard now and she's losing her shape.

Although, that was her freeing the arms! She has the longest arms I've ever seen of a female cricketer. She's got a massive wing span.

The runs are not exactly flowing but the crowd don't seem to care one bit - they just need a wicket to cheer.

This is going to be South Africa's strength throughout the series, the fiery and often unplayable nature of their two opening bowlers, Kapp and Ismail.

You just can't take your eyes off them when they're in full flow.

We have the first boundary of the 2023 World Cup!

Chamari Atapattu takes a step forward and hits Kapp through cover. Straight away the slip goes out.

Sri Lanka were finalists last year in the Asia Cup. They beat Pakistan in the semi-finals but lost to India in the final.

South Africa bring their slip and the person stationed at third up.

Shabnim Ismail is going through the gears - notching 75mph.

An over full of dot balls, South Africa will be getting frustrated. Try as she might, Ismail just can't find the edge of Sri Lanka's flashing blades.

South Africa will want two or three early wickets and they'll be into the Sri Lanka middle order.

Sri Lanka have a lot of left-handers and that might work to their advantage because there isn't a lot of them around the world.

South Africa will be expecting to win this game though.

Chamari Atapattu is really strong off her legs. She's waiting for the bowlers to pitch the ball just outside leg.

It's a single run to end Marizanne Kapp's first spell before the ball is handed back to Shabnim Ismail.

It's not quite sold out here, but it's busy, and the noise is brilliant every time Ismail runs in at the moment.

The stand to my left is packed with schoolkids, who are making the bulk of the noise and it's very heart-warming.

I'm looking forward to hearing what it's like when a wicket falls...

I spoke to Dane earlier and she said she was OK.

I was surprised by how fit she looked. She looks as fit as she ever had.

South Africa have made a rod for their own backs if I'm honest.
