The Canterbury shadowsImage source, Alex Hoad - BBC Sport

The shadows are lengthening at Canterbury.

Around 15 overs remaining in the day and Northants are taking their second innings very steadily since opener Ricardo Vasconcelos' departure, inching along to 15-1.

  7. Postpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 222-8 v Surrey 442

Lancashire number 10 Will Williams is holding Surrey up a bit.

He doesn't have too many shots, but his defence is good and he has kept Colin de Grandhomme company for 40 minutes even if the scoreboard is not moving very quickly.

  8. 50 runs

Half-century for Lewis Gregorypublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Somerset 229-7 v Warwickshire

Somerset have finally found two men to stay together and form a decent partnership.

But the hosts already have three batting points in the bag in Cardiff and will be seeking a fourth. They also have a large first-innings lead, having more than doubled their visitors' tally with wickets still in hand.

Kiran Carlson hit 106 earlier and Billy Root is close to joining him in the century club, having compiled 85 so far.

    Kent 222 v Northants 117 & 6-1

    Big early breakthrough for Kent.

It's been an incredibly nervy start from Northants, surviving a couple of hearty lbw appeals and also almost gifting Kent a run-out opportunity.

But their luck runs out as Ricardo Vasconcelos chips one up and Ben Compton takes an excellent if unorthodox catch.

  16. Kent can take big strides in final sessionpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Northants 117, Kent 222

    Andrew Radd
    BBC Radio Northampton

Northamptonshire are still afloat in this match thanks to the efforts of Chris Tremain - on his County Championship debut - and Jack White, who shared nine wickets to restrict Kent's lead to 105.

But with 23 overs remaining on the second day, the home side could take big strides towards wrapping up victory if they can dismantle Northamptonshire's top order in the final session.

Tremain must have a liking for Canterbury - in his only other first-class appearance in England, also on this ground, he picked up 4-70 for an Australia XI against England Lions in 2019.

Kent's strong position owed much to Zak Crawley who fought hard in testing conditions to make 91 in nearly five hours at the crease.

  17. 'Nervy game'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 231 v Nottinghamshire 185 & 118-4

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

The game has got a bit nervy again after that quick three-wicket burst from Kyle Abbott.

Notts started bright and breezy in their second innings as Mo Abbas and Keith Barker weren’t quite their usual miserly selves.

Whilst Abbott took the plaudits for his wickets he was well backed up by James Fuller whose eight- over spell cost just ten runs and he had a very good shout for an LBW decision turned down against Mullaney.

  18. 'Champions in control'published at 17:53 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Lancashire 210-8 v Surrey 442

    Um-E-Aymen Babar
BBC Sport at Emirates Old Trafford

The defending champions Surrey are in total control here.

Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings added 76 before being bowled by Jordan Clark to spark a dramatic collapse of four wickets for 15 runs.

We should get a full day's play here too. The sun is still shining and players' shadows are starting to lengthen.

The crowd has followed the sun and moved from the left of the pavilion to the right.

  19. Division Two updatepublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Sussex 271-7 v Durham 376

Durham are into the Sussex tail after removing Cheteshwar Pujara and George Garton.

Pujara made 115 and Garton 28, but Durham will fancy getting a good first-innings advantage now.

  20. Postpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 7 April 2023

    Hampshire 231 v Nottinghamshire 185 & 108-4

Ben Slater and Steven Mullaney are really digging in for the team.

They have added 22 and are trying to take the sting out of the Hampshire attack, as the lead nudges up to 62.
