Essex have been ruthlessly efficient with the bat in the opening session.

The visitors have only scored from 42 balls across the opening 30 overs but 23 of those were dispatched to the ropes, with just 11 singles run.

Nick Browne and Tom Westley have punished the loose balls and not allowed their hosts to build any real pressure.

The early dismissal of Sir Alastair Cook already seems a distant memory for the home faithful.

    Glamorgan v Durham 104-1

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Durham had the better of the first session despite being put in by Glamorgan on a sunny but cool day, with David Lloyd left to ponder his decision at lunch.

Alex Lees, who hit an unbeaten 182 in last season’s opener, made a confident start despite a testing opening spell from Michael Neser, but was given lbw for 24 to Timm van der Gugten.

Lees obviously thought himself unlucky, but there was some fortune for the cautious Michael Jones who had left one from Neser which almost grazed his off bail.

Glamorgan had only themselves to blame when Kiran Carlson spilled a slip catch early in Scott Borthwick’s innings, with Jones and Borthwick putting on 64 by lunch.

  3. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Sussex 103-2 v Yorkshire

Sussex went off like a train with a flurry of fours after winning the toss at Hove, but Yorkshire gradually stemmed the charge and were rewarded with the wickets of Ali Orr and Tom Haines, the latter for 48.

Dom Bess removed Haines with the help of an lbw decision and has 1-18 from seven overs, with Jordan Thompson the other successful bowler.

Tom Alsop is 26 not out and Cheteshwar Pujara has eight.

Bowling has been hard work on this surface, which looks close to pristine.

Fluent batting from the Notts openers this morning after losing the toss.

Slater plays Bamber defensively through the off side and then squeezes a ball between slip and gully for four.

Bamber has been the pick of the bowlers, taking the wicket of Hameed just before the break and coming ever so close to an early breakthrough when Duckett edged past first slip for four this morning. He beats Slater outside the off stump with the last ball of he session.

The two Bens (Duckett and Slater) take Notts through to the break.

    Kent v Essex 121-1

No playing for lunch from Nick Browne as he gets two fours in the final over of the morning.

A terrific session for Essex, scoring freely after winning the toss.

Browne reaches lunch on 34, captain Tom Westley has 48 with Sir Alastair Cook the only wicket to fall for a bright-and-breezy 39 off 30 balls.

  6. Lunch at Wantage Roadpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Northants v Hampshire 77-2

Nick Gubbins plays out a maiden from Gareth Berg to end the morning at Northampton and it is the visitors who are likely to be the happier team as lunches are consumed.

Northants got rid of Fletcha Middleton early, but two or three catches went down in the slips before Felix Organ was finally caught behind for 38.

Gubbins has been solid in making 34 not out, playing with soft hands in defence, and Hampshire captain James Vince is on one.

  7. Lunch at Tauntonpublished at 13:02 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Somerset 91-4 v Lancashire

Lancashire's morning in the west country.

Two wickets for Jimmy Anderson in an excellent opening spell before a good counter-attack from Tom Kohler-Cadmore ended on 38.

Somerset captain Tom Abell reaches lunch on 16. Home hopes probably rest with him.

A nervous moment for James Rew as he edges Colin de Grandhomme towards Keaton Jennings at slip.

But the ball does not quite carry and the Somerset wicketkeeper breathes a sigh of relief.

50 for Haseeb Hameedpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 100-0

Andersson drifts a ball into the pads and Hameed clips the ball away for one to reach his half century off 86 balls with ten fours.

It's also the 100 partnership between Hameed and Duckett.

Middlesex have bowled well for the most part - but the first session of play has been won emphatically by Notts.

Disappointment for Somerset. Relief for Lancashire.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore's counter-attack is brought to an end. He goes for another big shot and it finds the big hands of Tom Bailey at long leg.

Kohler-Cadmore ends with 38 off 40 balls, including six fours and a six.

    Organ c McManus b Berg 38 (Northants v Hants 72-2)

    Felix OrganImage source, Getty Images

He had a couple of let-offs earlier in his innings but there is no reprieve this time for Felix Organ, who jabs unconvincingly at a decent one from Gareth Berg and provides a comfortable catch for Northants keeper - and vice-captain - Lewis McManus.

Not what Hampshire wanted in the final half hour of the morning session and skipper James Vince takes the long walk to replace Organ, with Nick Gubbins still on 30 at the other end.

A stiff breeze is getting up at Wantage Road - "It's funnelling down from the Wash" says Radio Northampton commentator Andrew Radd and Berg beats Vince with another good one.

  16. Postpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 97-0

Hameed is targeting mid wicket with plenty of flicks outside off stump off Andersson but doesn't get the ball away this time. Just one run off the over.

Duckett picks up a single off Hollman at the other end - and Hameed moves to 45 with a back foot cut through the covers.

  17. Postpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Northants v Hants 72-1

More runs for Hampshire as Felix Organ crashes a rare wide one from Ben Sanderson through the covers for four.

Organ tries his luck again, this time off the back foot, but Sam Whiteman makes a good stop at point to keep him to a single.

    Northants v Hants 67-1

Nick Gubbins is suddenly looking to be more expansive - a glorious cover drive brings him four runs off Gareth Berg and is his second boundary in successive overs bowled by the Northants all-rounder.

He is 30 not out and poised to overtake his partner, who has 33.
