    Somerset 101-4 v Lancashire

A lovely clip to the midwicket boundary from skipper Tom Abell off Tom Bailey brings up the Somerset 100.

Lots of batting still to do from here with four wickets down, though.

    Northants v Hants 88-2

Nick Gubbins flicks away Jack White off his hip. Ben Sanderson makes a diving save at backward square leg but only succeeds in pushing the ball into the rope a few yards further on.

The pace bowler responds with a superb delivery which cuts away off the pitch and just beats the outside edge.

Gubbins has 41 not out and James Vince is on five.

BBC Radio Northampton's Andrew Radd tells us: "Hampshire are chasing their first Championship victory at Northampton since 1993 - when BBC Radio Solent commentator Kevan James was a key player, removing the likes of Allan Lamb and Rob Bailey before helping Hampshire to their victory target with a knock of 71."

    Middlesex v Notts 125-1

    A blustery afternoon at Lord's.

Another tight line and length from the Middlesex captain - plus a hint of swing as Ben Slater is hit on the pad.

A half appeal but its not out. Looked a bit leg side.

Duckett tucks Bamber away to square leg for one. Slater leaves carefully outside off stump.

Steady start to the session of play.

    Sussex 113-2 v Yorks

A productive first over after lunch for Sussex.

Cheteshwar Pujara finds the boundary from Matt Fisher's opening delivery and there is another later in the over which costs the paceman 10 runs.

    Somerset 92-4 v Lancashire

Jimmy Anderson is opening the bowling immediately after lunch for Lancashire.

Remember, his spell this morning was 7-2-13-2 as Somerset slipped to 24-3.

  9. Somerset prospects 'looking gloomy'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Somerset 91-4 v Lancashire

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset commentator

Somerset's top order batting still isn't firing. Put in by Keaton Jennings, they lost three wickets in the first three quarters of an hour to JImmy Anderson and co, and a spirited counter-attack was cut short when Tom Kohler-Cadmore played one aggressive shot too many to be caught on the long leg boundary by Tom Bailey off Colin de Grandhomme's medium pace.

Tom Abell is still there, but the injury-dictated absence of Craig Overton and Josh Davey means a longer tail than usual as well as a seriously weakened bowling attack.

The sun may be shining but Somerset's prospects in this game are already looking distinctly gloomy.

    Northants v Hants 81-2

They are under way again at Wantage Road and James Vince finds the square leg boundary from a Jack White delivery that is fractionally short of a length.

There's a loud lbw appeal but Vince is given the benefit of the doubt. Must have been a close call.

  11. Play resumes at Lord'spublished at 13:43 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 123-1

A very encouraging start for Notts - who put on an opening stand of 117 in 28 overs before the wicket of Haseeb Hameed just before lunch.

His half century brought the visitors to a very welcome batting milestone, as reported by Dave Bracegirdle this afternoon. The 7000th half century scored for Notts no less.

Bens Slater (4 not out) and Duckett (58 not out) to resume the batting - and another Ben to resume the commentary here.

Very much a Yorkshire theme during the lunch break - you can listen to an excellent interview with coach Ottis Gibson below. He thinks the late Malcolm Marshall is the best fast bowler ever.

Wonder if Bazball would have worked against Malcolm? No-one would have dared to try it against that West Indies attack.

Essex have dominated with the bat after winning the toss at the Spitfire Ground.

Seemingly picking off boundaries at will on a pitch giving little assistance to the seamers, they raced to 43-0 in the 9th over before losing their first – and so far only – wicket of the day, Sir Alastair Cook going caught behind off Australian Wes Agar for an uncharacteristically rapid 39 off 30 balls.

At a sunny but brisk Canterbury, coat and scarf muffled spectators have been treated to an assured display from Essex skipper Tom Westley (49*) and Nick Browne (34*) who’ve been relatively untroubled by Kent’s attack so far.

The home side have struggled to make things happen on what looks like a benign surface, and may be in for a long day in the field.

    Sussex 103-2 v Yorkshire - lunch

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex commentator

Honours about even at Hove after Sussex won the toss on a good batting wicket at Hove.

Ali Orr and Tom Haines got Sussex off to a flying start before Orr played a loose shot to be caught in the slips for 20, and then Tom Haines looked either disgusted with himself, or more likely the decision, as was given out two short of a half century.

Mickey Edwards, the Australian making his Yorkshire debut, has looked impressive, bowling with good pace, and might on other occasion have picked up a couple of wickets.

What a first morning of the season at New Road.

Seven wickets gone - four of them inside the first half hour.

Bad shots? Possibly. But really more to do with fine bowling, from a Worcestershire pace attack spearheaded by the ageless Joe Leach, who led the way with an opening spell of 13-2-8-3.

Jack Taylor and Zafar Gohar have dug in a bit for Gloucestershire with a 28-run stand to shore things up - but it's still been the hosts' morning - and in glorious Pear weather too.
