  1. Bad light stops play at Northamptonpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Northants v Hampshire 287-4

James Vince faces one ball from Jack White at the start of a new over and the umpires decide the light isn't good enough to continue.

Those two recent wickets - Nick Gubbins and James Fuller - will have perked up Northants, but Vince is 104 not out and they need to get rid of him after putting Hampshire in before the start of play.

Gubbins earlier made 125 before a flying slip catch by Ricardo Vasconcelos sent him on his way - a piece of fielding in marked contrast to the four dropped catches earlier in the day.

    Worcs 85-5 v Glos 231

Still 14 overs left this evening and no immediate danger of rain or bad light.

An awkward time for Ben Cox to begin his innings.

Marchant de Lange takes over the bowling from Zafar.

Tom Abell takes a single off Saqib Mahmood, and that brings up the 200 partnership for this fifth wicket.

He and James Rew have done a wonderful job for Somerset.

    Somerset 279-4 v Lancashire

With Jimmy Anderson dropping that caught and bowled chance off James Rew, here is a frightening thought.

Anderson first played Test cricket in May 2003. Rew was not even born until January 2004!

Agreed, Ed. Really, really good catch by Bracey.

  6. Close of play at Hovepublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Sussex 275-5 v Yorkshire

The umpires don't hang about after taking the players off for bad light - that is the end of day one at Hove.

Yorkshire reduced the home side to 124-4, but Tom Alsop made 95 before falling to George Hill from the second ball after tea.

He was well supported by Oli Carter, who is 60 not out and has added 57 for the sixth wicket with Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Apparently the scoreboard has stalled at New Road but the Pears are ticking over quite nicely at around three runs per over.

    Out! Tom Price has four!

Brilliant one-handed catch from Bracey, diving to his right as the ball flies off an inside edge.

  8. Durham keep stumbling in Cardiffpublished at 17:43 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Durham 321-6 v Glamorgan

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham keep finding ways of losing wickets, just as they look set for a big partnership, on what looks like a very good batting track.

Coach Ryan Campbell said earlier he would have expected a score of 425 to 450 on this pitch, but despite having three half centuries so far, nobody has gone on to get to three figures.

Borthwick (59) clipped a ball from Michael Neser to Marnus Labuschagne at short mid-wicket when he looked quite comfortable in the middle.

But there was certainly contention about Jones' decision. He was given out LBW by umpire Tom Lungley. But Labuschagne was bowling around the wicket and the ball pitched down the leg side. As Jones (69) looked to reverse sweep, it hit him in the pad and he was given out. That decision caused quite a stir among viewers.

Meanwhile, Robinson (73) was given out caught behind off Labuschagne but looked stunned by the decision, to the point where I wonder if he hit it or not?

  9. dropped catch

    Somerset 277-4 v Lancashire

Jimmy Anderson creates his own chance, but he can't take it!

James Rew can't keep his drive down and it's a one-handed return chance for Anderson - it hits the fingers but doesn't stick!

    Further frustration for Lancashire.

    Fuller b Sanderson 16 (Northants v Hants 287-4)

When you're tired after a frustrating day in the field, James Fuller isn't the kind of batter you want to see striding to the middle.

As it to underline that point, he strikes back to back boundaries off Jack White on either side of the wicket and then is down the track to smash Ben Sanderson away for the first six of the game.

But that is his final contribution as Sanderson atones by nipping one through and cleaning him up.

The floodlights are on at Wantage Road - will we get the full allocation before the close?

Maiden from slow left arm bowler Zafar.

Three slips for Tom Price. The second ball of his 7th over is driven through mid off for four by Waite.

Waite has looked surprisingly assured, given the pressure of the three wickets in three balls that preceded his innings here.

Slightly out of control from James Rew as his shot races to the point boundary, but Somerset continue on their merry way.

The 19-year-old is onto 90, 10 away from his second first-class ton.

  13. Bad light stops play at Hovepublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Sussex 275-5 v Yorkshire

The light has closed in at Hove and the players are off the field.

Perhaps they've done well to get 79 overs of play in with just 42 possible at Canterbury in neighbouring Kent.

Oli Carter took a couple off Dom Bess before the interruption and is 60 not out, with partner Fynn Hudson-Prentice on 32.

    Worcs 77-4 v Glos 231

Tom Price continues from the Diglis End.

Waite drives the bowler down the ground for two runs. Two more behind square on the leg side.

A sense of calm is slowly returning at New Road...

  15. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 252-5

Sadly, our worst fears have been confirmed as the gathering cloud and rain has ended the day's play with 69 overs bowled.

An intriguingly poised game with dominant Notts batting in the morning session, three quick wickets after the break - and an innings of real promise from Lyndon James, who made 41 off 66 balls to arrest the post-lunch decline.

But the day belongs to Ben Duckett, who scored his first century at Lord's and is unbeaten on 119.

    Gubbins c Vasconcelos b White 125 (Northants v Hants 270-3)

The waiting is finally over for Northants as Jack White brings Nick Gubbins' innings to an end at Wantage Road.

He appears to be surprised by a little extra bounce and Ricardo Vasconcelos pulls in a superb one-handed slip catch diving to his left.

Gubbins batted for 321 minutes, faced 249 balls and hit 15 fours - and his partnership with James Vince added 198 to the Hampshire total.

It is a third-wicket record for the club against Northants - the previous one set in 1927.

    Northants v Hants 265-2

With Harry Brook playing brilliantly and Jonny Bairstow nearing a return to full fitness, it's hard to see a way back into Test cricket for James Vince. But four runs off Jack White sees him to his 28th first-class hundred - this one off 167 balls. A quality player.

  20. new ball

New ballpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Somerset 256-4 v Lancashire

Lancashire have grabbed the new ball and thrown it to Jimmy Anderson. The Red Rose county need a bit of magic.

But it's a different game when the two batters are set on 106 and 75 than both starting on nought.
