Just eight minutes were possible after the return from bad light and before the rain arrived at Canterbury.

The final ball of that spell saw Tom Westley flash an edge over third slip.. about as close to an opening as Kent have created since Sir Alastair Cook nicked behind in the ninth over.

The covers are on, and so bright are the colours on the weather radar, they might well be on for a good while yet.

  5. wicket

WICKET Borthwick c Labuschagne b Neser 59published at 14:50 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Glamorgan v Durham 157-2

Breakthrough four Glamorgan and a soft dismissal in truth as Borthwick clips a leg side ball from Neser straight to Labuschagne at mid wicket.

Time for David Bedingham to have a bat.

    Somerset 144-4 v Lancashire

This fifth-wicket stand is now worth 60 between Tom Abell and James Rew.

The Somerset innings is starting to feel similar to ones by Surrey and Essex in Lancashire's previous two games.

Surrey were 44-3 and reached 442. Essex were 25-3 in difficult batting conditions and got to 219. Somerset were 24-3 this morning.

    Sussex 142-4 v Yorks

Tom Alsop made 930 Championship runs last summer and he is looking good at Hove today as three fours in the same Jordan Thompson over carry him to 50 from 96 balls.

Sussex were regrouping after the loss of Cheteshwar Pujara and Tom Clark since lunch, but that over has broken the shackles.

  8. 6 runs

Tom Price runs riot at Worcesterpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Worcs v Glos 176-9

More fireworks from Tom Price, who top edges a pull over the keeper's head for four, belts another six down the ground and slaps another for down to long off.

The unlucky bowler on this occasion is Josh Tongue.

Six more runs to long on off the bowling of Joe Leach at the other end.

Leach digs one in short and Price hooks another four seemingly off his eyebrows through mid wicket.

    Northants 131-2 v Hants

It certainly isn't a fast outfield at Wantage Road.

Nick Gubbins drives a rare half-volley from Ben Sanderson and it only just reaches the rope.

A square cut follows later in the over, but only travels far enough to allow the Hampshire batter to run two as Northants skipper Luke Procter prepares to bring himself on to bowl from the other end.

    Middlesex v Notts 154-4

The new batsman is Lyndon James - who is in the middle earlier than he might have expected after Notts went into lunch on 123-1.

James is squared up and edges a ball from Bamber but it doesn't quite carry to the slips.

    Soft hands saved him there.

The fourth ball of the over is steered away to Pieter Malan at mid wicket and a very tight single is taken.

    Northants v Hants 125-2

    Kevan James

Nick Gubbins has just scored his third half century in as many matches. His innings so far has been chanceless but he needn’t worry on that score.

Felix Organ who made 38 before lunch was dropped three times in the slips. Now James Vince, who got underneath a hook shot off Tremain, has been dropped at fine leg and it wasn’t difficult.

Maybe the cold wind blowing across the ground has something to do with the poor catching efforts.

    Stoppage number two.

We almost had a wicket the ball before as Tom Westley's drive flies just over the head of Jack Leaning at third slip.

Leaning's hands would still be stinging if the ball had hit them in these conditions!

A nightmare dismissal for the Notts captain, who drives the ball on the up straight to Martin Andersson at cover.

Middlesex have come roaring back into this match since lunch.

  14. wicket

WICKET De Lange c Cox b Tongue 22published at 14:38 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

The fun is over - for now.

One ball after rocking back and belting Tongue over long on for another six, the number ten top edges a pull and skies it. Cox has seemingly a minute or two to wait for the ball to land safely into the gloves.

  15. Not quite South Australia weatherpublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Kent v Essex 159-1

Wes Agar is bowling on his Kent debut.

Not sure bowling on a breezy spring afternoon this is what he had in mind when he agreed to come over from South Australia!

  16. dropped catch

Another one goes begging for Northantspublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

    Northants v Hants 122-2

Chris Tremain digs in a short one, James Vince top edges an attempted pull, but the catch is floored by Ben Sanderson at long leg. That is four chances spurned now by the home side and Sanderson hurls the ball back to the keeper with plenty of frustrated venom behind it.

That was a short stoppage in Canterbury.

The players have returned to the field. The light has improved, but it's still very windy and not the nicest time to be in the outfield.

Nor to be in the stands either!

  18. wicket

WICKET Montgomery c Simpson b Bamber 9published at 14:33 British Summer Time 20 April 2023

A persistent length from Bamber pays off as Montgomery is forward and edges a loose defensive prod to the Middlesex keeper.

Joe Clarke is the Notts number five.

Little footwork but a great eye and plenty of muscle as de Lange launches Leach down the ground again for his second six.

That's a partnership of 50 in 48 balls with Tom Price.

What a fine, whirlwind innings in adversity.

Tom Price drives Pennington crisply through the offside for his 6th four and he has a 50 in 47 balls.

Two sixes in that knock as well.

Gloucestershire were 89-8 at one stage!
