A fair bit of rain around today but it's been a decent one for England players preparing for a summer of Test cricket.

Ben Duckett made 177 for Notts at Lord's and Stuart Broad picked up a Middlesex wicket just before the close.

James Anderson completed a five-for at Taunton and Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings reminded the selectors of what he can do with an unbeaten 124.

At Hove, Ollie Robinson claimed his first wicket of the summer for Sussex and will be looking for more tomorrow against Yorkshire.

We'll be back with you from 10:30 for full coverage. See you then.

  3. Close of play at Hovepublished at 19:33 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 216-7

The umpires take the players off with one over left to play due to bad light.

That will be that for day two - a day that belongs to Sussex after those late wickets.

  4. wicket

WICKETpublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Hope b Carson 38 (Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 216-7)

What a late evening bonus for Sussex!!

The prize wicket of Shai Hope in the penultimate over as he goes back to one that keeps low and it strikes his stumps.

Jack Carson has a third wicket to go with a great catch and he has put his team in a great position.

  5. 6 runs

Postpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 212-6

    Lovely shot from Jordan Thompson.

Short and a bit of width from Henry Crocombe and he smashes it to the fence. He won't turn down the chance to score.

And to prove the point, when Crocombe drops short next ball, Thompson sends it over the fence at deep fine leg for six.

He's then gifted a leg-stump half volley. 14 in three balls!

  6. Postpublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 199-6

This really is a no-win situation for Yorkshire. The close of play can't come quickly enough as we tick towards half seven.

Another wicket would put Sussex in a very strong position.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 19:14 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Bess c Carson b Crocombe 13 (Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 198-6)

    Great catch!

Dom Bess takes on the short ball from Henry Crocombe, but he picks out Jack Carson in the deep, who grabs it with a diving low catch.

That wicket is a great, late, strike for Sussex.

  8. Not outpublished at 19:11 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 198-5

Jack Carson with a huge appeal as he strikes Dom Bess on the pads. Down on one knee with both hands in the air - full marks for that.

Unfortunately the ball was probably missing leg stump.

  9. Postpublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 196-5

Shai Hope takes on a hook shot from Henry Crocombe, but the West Indies batter gets it a lot finer than he would have chosen. The top-edge still gets him four though.

Yorkshire will want him there at the close of play.

  10. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Northants 95-5 v Hampshire 482-8 dec

Umpires Mike Burns and James Middlebrook deprive us of the final seven overs as they decide the light isn't good enough for play to continue at Wantage Road.

Very much Hampshire's day as James Vince made 186 to propel them towards the declaration.

Northants were 47-1 in reply but then lost three wickets in the space of five balls and face an uphill battle to avoid the follow-on in what is likely to be an extended third day, if the weather is kind.

    Middlesex 111-2 v Notts 364

Broad has a leg slip in as he bowls to Pieter Malan.

Struck on the pad and Malan is gone!

Adjacent to middle and leg with movement off the seam from a full length.

With five deliveries remaining in the last scheduled over of the day, that's the close of play.

Solid innings for the most part from the Middlesex top order - but that's a crucial breakthrough for Notts.

Hats off to Ben Duckett for a superb 177 earlier today.

  12. Eight overs leftpublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorkshire 188-5

We have reached seven o'clock in the evening and there are still eight overs left to bowl.

The sunshine is bright, so we may well get all of those in.

  13. Postpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 111-1 v Notts 364

Forward short leg in for Patterson-White, who bowls very full and is steered away to mid wicket by Malan for four.

Not quite out of the middle but well out of the reach of the close catcher.

A single off the fifth and Stoneman leaves outside off.

  14. Postpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Northants 94-5 v Hants 482-8 dec

A double change by Hampshire as Liam Dawson comes on with his left-arm spin. Just one run from it. Tidy stuff.

Still nine to go if the umpires permit.

  15. Postpublished at 18:53 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 104-1 v Notts 364

Malan is able to leave Broad outside the off stump initially.

The second one is going down leg and that's a superb diving take from keeper Joe Clarke.

Malan pushes the ball into the offside and runs a very tight single as Hammed quickly retrieves the ball.

    Two overs left tonight.

Notts have turned to the spin of Liam Patterson-White.

Shai Hope scoring a century for the West IndiesImage source, Rex Features

Shai Hope hits successive fours off Nathan McAndrew, one front foot and one back foot.

Hope moves to 28. The West Indies man really is a classy player.

As Adrian Harms on BBC Radio Sussex points out, it's remarkable that his only two Test hundreds came in that famous West Indies win at Headingley in 2017.

  17. Postpublished at 18:51 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Northants 93-5 v Hants 482-8 dec

Hampshire decide that spin is needed to allow them to prolong the second day's play and here comes Felix Organ.

A short leg is in place but Josh Cobb turns his first ball away fine for a couple. Little sign of turn in that over.

  18. Postpublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 103-1 v Notts 364

Brett Hutton is bowling round the wicket - and that's spearing down the leg side as Stoneman helps it around the corner for four runs.

Stoneman ducks under a bouncer and the ball runs away for four byes.

No way the keeper (standing up) could've stopped that.

That brings up the Middlesex 100 in the 28th over and also the 50 partnership for the second wicket.

  19. dropped catch

Let-off for McManuspublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Northants 89-5 v Hants 482-8 dec

James Fuller finds the edge of Lewis McManus' bat but keeper Ben Brown is unable to gather a low right-handed chance.

The light isn't great at Wantage Road and Northants don't want to lose another wicket before the close.

  20. Postpublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 95-1 v Notts 364

Five overs left tonight - and Stuart Broad is back on from the Pavilion End.

His second ball is short. Pieter Malan waits in the crease and pulls it away to square leg for four.

Five dot balls make up the rest of the over.
