    Northants 17-1 v Hants 482-8 dec

Wisely, the two Northants batters appear disinclined to play at anything that isn't threatening the stumps. If they can see off Hampshire's new-ball pair that will be a big job done for their side.

"[Hassan] Azad is very good at playing the ball late," opines BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James.

Sam Whiteman is fortunate, though, as an inside edge just misses the stumps and runs away fine for four.

  2. Middlesex batting at Lord'spublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 0-0 v Notts 364

This is a more than handy Notts total so runs will surely be needed all the way down.

To date, most of the Middlesex Championship runs this season have come from batters in the lower middle order and tail.

Sam Robson will open with Mark Stoneman.

Bright sunshine at Lord's as the heavy roller moves up and down the wicket.

Stuart Broad will bowl to Robson. 31 overs left - conditions permitting.

    Somerset 441 v Lancashire 179-1

Another slog sweep, another six for Josh Bohannon.

That is the fifth six that Jack Leach has been hit for in this innings. He really has been expensive so far.

WICKET Paterson b Higgins 0published at 16:44 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 364

It's all over in the blink of an eye as the Notts number 11 gets a first baller.

    Bowled through the gate driving.

A good innings total nonetheless, led by a superb century from Duckett and valuable support from Hameed, James and Mullaney.

Higgins ends with figures of 2-50. Bamber was the pick of the attack with 4-89.

  5. wicket

WICKET Shakeel b Crocombe 3published at 16:42 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorks 65-2

Horror dismissal as the batter shoulders arms to a ball that jags in and hits the top of middle stump.

Dawid Malan is Yorkshire's number four.

    Kent v Essex 245-1

You could perhaps forgive the Kent bowlers for looking wistfully at the bright skies we now have at Canterbury and yearning for the return of the thick rain laden clouds we had this morning.

On a good surface for batting, Tom Westley and Nick Browne have looked assured and comfortable with little to seriously disrupt their afternoon’s work. Westley’s century was full of his trademark clips and drives and Browne’s innings has been built steadily and patiently.

The Kent captain, Sam Billings, has rung the changes with his bowlers and tried to build pressure with his field settings but the fact he deployed boundary riders either side of the wicket for the 20 minutes up to tea tells you where his thinking lies.

  7. wicket

WICKET Duckett c Andersson b Higgins 177published at 16:41 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 364-9

Broad is forward to Andersson, tucking the ball behind square for two.

Out! Duckett steps outside off, slog sweeping Higgins to Andersson at fine leg and a wonderful innings is over.

He's applauded all the way back to the pavilion.

    Northants 4-1 v Hants 482-8 dec

Not sure what Hassan Azad is trying to do here - he certainly isn't a Bazball exponent based on his previous record.

He again comes down the pitch then turns his back and lets a short ball from Mo Abbas hit him.

A couple of extravagant leaves follow before he turns the final ball of the over to long leg for a single.

Nick Browne edges one through a gap in the slips and away to the boundary, to bring up the 200 between him and Tom Westley.

The partnership has actually lasted for over 28 hours since Sir Alastair Cook was out yesterday morning!

    Northants 2-1 v Hants 482-8 dec

Kyle Abbott shares the new ball with Mo Abbas, but Hassan Azad - a devotee of the Rory Burns stance - has the first runs for Northants as he tucks the ball away into the leg side.

For reasons best known to himself, the Northants opener then takes a couple of paces forward as Abbott fizzes one past the outside edge.

  12. Postpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex 360-8 v Middlesex

Higgins finds the outside edge of Broad's bat but the ball doesn't carry to keeper Simpson.

Broad strides down the wicket and tries to force the pace but is cramped for room and can't swing his arms through the line of the ball.

  13. Evening session begins at Lord'spublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Middlesex v Notts 358-8

How many can Ben Duckett get here? He looked busy in that final passage of play before the break - and Broad may well have a biff too.

36 overs left in the day's play as Higgins resumes the bowling.

  14. Postpublished at 16:31 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

    Sussex 361 v Yorks 63-1

Finlay Bean drives at McAndrew and gets a thick inside edge off McAndrew.

The ball skims through square leg for four.

A brace of twos to complete the over, which goes for nine runs in total.

It looks decidedly gloomy here at Hove but we're fine to play for now.

The start of the final session in Taunton where, touch wood, we have not lost a single ball of action.

Josh Bohannon is the new batter as he comes to the crease with captain Keaton Jennings.

If there's a screw to be turned, there are few better men for the job than Mohammad Abbas. He is right on the money with his first delivery and Ricardo Vasconcelos is gone. It's a wicket maiden and Northants have 42 more overs to survive.

  17. Play resumes at Hovepublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 21 April 2023

44.4 overs remaining so McAndrew completes the over, bowling to Yorkshire number three Saud Shakeel.

    Two runs off the over.

The floodlights are on as Finlay Bean solidly plays out a maiden, bowled by Henry Crocombe.

As Andrew Radd and Kevan James chat about Chevrolets and Ford Mustangs, Hampshire press on towards 500 but Rob Keogh has Liam Dawson lbw as he tries to sweep and the visitors declare.

Over 40 overs remain in the day's play so this will be a tough 'session within a session' for Northants. Keogh finishes with 2-97.
