for Michael Burgesspublished at 18:38 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 338-5

You won't find all of his shots this evening in a textbook, well, certainly not a cricket one, but this has been a fun and aggressive knock by Michael Burgess and he's helped his side to a healthy position at the Ageas.

His 17th first-class half-century came from 70 balls with five fours and a six.

The lead is 108. The visitors have Hampshire exactly where they want them.

  2. Postpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 334-5

It's not been the fastest session to say the least and it's getting slower as the hosts are given permission to change the ball. One too many big hits to the fence may have taken their toll.

This pair have added 84 from 104 balls and they need 16 more from the next four overs to secure a third batting point.

  3. Postpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 158-4 v Northamptonshire 255

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is racing along - up to 73 not out now off 53 balls.

    Positive, rather than anything reckless.

The deficit is under 100 as well.

  4. for Wiaan Mulderpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 317-7 v Leics 122

After that earlier dropped chance, Wiaan Mulder decides to take matters into his own hands and bowls the advancing Luis Reece.

    Essex 314 v Surrey 240

    Jamie PorterImage source, Rex Features

Gus Atkinson has a go at a Jamie Porter bouncer and a top edge brings him four runs.

That's as far as it goes for Surrey, who yield a 74 run first-innings deficit, as Porter has his fellow pace bowler leg-before and finishes with 4-51.

Advantage Essex - but what can Surrey do in the remaining overs on day two?

  6. Postpublished at 18:28 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 317-6 v Leics 122

Wiaan Mulder begins celebrating a five-wicket haul, then notices that wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb had dropped the chance offered to him by Zak Chappell.

    Derbyshire's first-innings lead is approaching 200.

  7. Postpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 321-5

Given the weekend forecast, bonus points might be useful all over the country.

Hampshire need another wicket to land one while Warwickshire are 29 runs away from a third bonus with 36 balls remaining to get them.

Kyle Abbott is brought back in to help Hampshire on both fronts.

Michael Burgess has 44 already with Ed Barnard on 65.

  8. Bad light stops play at Worcesterpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcestershire 264 & 17-1, Sussex 373

    Ged Scott
    BBC Sport at New Road

Off they come for bad light at Worcester - and by the body language and the handshakes that looks like it might be it for the day.

Still 11.2 overs left in the day though. And you would think that Sussex would be keen to get out there.

It all took a few by surprise, even the man on the tannoy. But it did suddenly cloud over.

    Confusion and delay.

  9. wicket

    WICKET - Abbott c Browne b Porter 31published at 18:22 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 235-9

Superb one-handed catch by Nick Browne as Sean Abbott clips Jamie Porter to mid-wicket. Number 11 Kemar Roach comes out and the one downside of this situation for Essex is that they could find themselves facing a few overs from the West Indies fast bowler before stumps.

  10. wicket

    WICKET - Libby c Pujara b Robinson 5published at 18:20 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 & 16-1 v Sussex 373

Cheteshwar Pujara stations himself as an additional slip.

It's an astute move as Jake Libby spars at one from Ollie Robinson and edges it to the Sussex skipper.

  11. Postpublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 312-5

Michael Burgess is tucking into some wayward fare from James Fuller, clubbing him for 10 off two deliveries sent down the legside, with the fielders struggling to pick up the ball looking into the low sun.

Fuller's now been officially warned for running down the wicket too. Not a fun few minutes for him. 12 off the over.

12 overs to come. Hampshire would gladly walk off now, you feel.

  12. wicket

    WICKET - Lamb b Mulder 22published at 18:18 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 310-6 v Leics 122

Derbyshire might wish they hadn't come back out after that rain delay, having lost both of their set batters since the resumption at 18:00.

Matt Lamb follows Leus du Plooy back to the pavilion after being bowled by Wiaan Mulder.

  13. Postpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 233-8

Leg-spinner Matt Critchley becomes the sixth bowler tried by Essex in this innings. His batting has improved so much in the past two or three seasons, it's easy to forget his bowling ability.

It's a decent start by him, just a couple of singles from the over - 10 more to come.

  14. Postpublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 & 16-0 v Sussex 373

Four runs to Jake Libby, the first boundary of his innings, off Ollie Robinson, a deliberate deflection wide of the slips.

Worcestershire badly need their two openers to still be together at close of play.

  15. Postpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 300-5

Warwickshire have definitely begun to accelerate, the lead is up to 71 and the run rate is rising.

Michael Burgess finally gets his pull technique right to dispatch James Fuller to the rope before a one-footed swat at the next ball which he slaps away for two.

The partnership is already 50 and they have a second batting point to reach five for the match, to Hampshire's one.

Nick Gubbins is back on the pitch for the hosts though, with some tape on his fingers.

  16. 50 runs

for Tom Kohler-Cadmorepublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 134-4 v Northamptonshire 255

Tom Kohler-Cadmore hits a 37-ball fifty for Somerset, his first for the county since joining from Yorkshire, containing 11 fours.

  17. dropped catch

Abbott in luckpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 226-8

Shane Snater finds the edge, surely that's gone - but no, Simon Harmer floors the slip chance. He can't believe it. Sean Abbott survives on 28 not out.

  18. Postpublished at 18:07 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 222-8

Ones and twos from Jamie Porter's latest over and there are 13 more scheduled at Chelmsford.

Sean Abbott is 23 not out and Gus Atkinson has four.

  19. 50 runs

for Ed Barnardpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 277-5

    Ed BarnardImage source, Getty Images

He played second-fiddle to Sam Hain for a little while but Ed Barnard has his first half-century as a Bear, after falling for 49 against Surrey last week.

His 21st first-class fifty featured that recent six and three fours from his 92 deliveries. Can he go on to complete his sixth first-class century?

The lead is up to 54...

  20. wicket

    WICKET - Du Plooy c Handscomb b Mulder 94published at 18:01 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 299-5 v Leics 122

Back under way at Derbyshire and within two balls of the restart Leus du Plooy is out.

Wiaan Mulder comes around the wicket and puts one in just the right area, Du Plooy has to play at it and edges behind.

A terrific delivery which ends a fine knock by the Derbyshire captain.
