    WICKET - Steel c S Cook b Harmer 7published at 16:27 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 163-6

It wasn't a great ball but Simon Harmer won't care about that - he has a bonus wicket for Essex and that is tea at Chelmsford.

Short of a length, it was there to be hit but Cameron Steel picked out Sam Cook on the square leg boundary.

Surrey added 83 runs for the loss of five wickets in the session. Ben Foakes remains on 20 not out.

  2. wicket

    WICKET - Dickson c Gouldstone b Sanderson 17published at 16:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 25-2 v Northamptonshire 255

Sean Dickson goes early once again. He's thrown his bat at one outside off-stump from Ben Sanderson and feathered a catch to the keeper.

That's 55 runs in seven knocks for the Somerset opener this term.

Tom Abell replaces him in the middle alongside Cameron Bancroft.

  3. Postpublished at 16:16 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 161-5

You could call that a chance but in reality Michael Pepper had absolutely no chance, standing up to the stumps, of taking an inside edge as Shane Snater bowls to Cameron Steel.

It brings Steel four fortunate runs as Surrey look to avoid any further loss before the tea interval.

Lancashire will be very happy with their afternoon's work, reaching tea on 98-1 and leading by 63.

George Balderson (44 not out) and Josh Bohannon (38 not out) have so far added 83 for the second wicket.

A big final session ahead for both sides on day two.

  5. Tea at Derbypublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 299-4 v Leics 122

Derbyshire are in complete control against Leicestershire as the tea break begins, which might be an extended one if the clouds above are anything to go by.

    It's not raining - yet.

Some gung-ho running from the hosts there, Sean Dickson chances a quick single off Ben Sanderson but would never have reached the crease at the non-striker's end before the ball flashed past the timbers from cover.

A time for cool heads, given the magnitude of the game.

  8. Postpublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 157-5

Ben Foakes has played one false shot recently, the ball lobbing over the fielder at cover, but there's nothing wrong with that one as he eases Sam Cook away for four.

No extravagant flourish, just economy of movement from the England wicketkeeper, who is 19 not out. Tea will be taken in 15 minutes.

Two overs to go until tea at Trent Bridge, where the weather has been set fair pretty much all day.

George Balderson and Josh Bohannon are batting in bright sunshine and extending Lancashire's lead.

Cheteshwar Pujara goes to tea on 97, within one shot of a second century in successive visits to New Road.

The Sussex skipper hit 109 on his last visit in April 2022 - and he is now just three runs away from a repeat.

It was a day set up for Australian star Steve Smith - instead it is India's in-form run machine that is performing, backed by Fynn Hudson-Prentice (27) in a stand so far worth 58, which has taken Sussex into a seven-run lead.

  11. Tea at Southamptonpublished at 16:01 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 207-4

A quickfire 43 between Sam Hain and Ed Barnard before tea has taken the visitors within 22 of the Hampshire total with six wickets remaining and within touching distance of a batting bonus point.

Hain has looked largely comfortable for his 59 while Ed Barnard has 23 from 30 balls.

Hampshire need some inspiration from somewhere.

The afternoon session was bookended by rain breaks, with play resuming half an hour late. Yorkshire’s bowling ranks lacked the potency of Ben Coad, who did not take to the field because of a groin strain.

They did, however, manage to pick up a couple of Glamorgan second-innings wickets, Jordan Thompson trapping Andrew Salter lbw for 15 when the total was on 44 and then Mickey Edwards inducing an uppish drive by David Lloyd, who was caught at point by substitute fielder Jonathan Tattersall for 33.

That proved to be the final ball of the session, as a heavy shower brought an end to proceedings at around 15:30, with Glamorgan leading by 196 runs.

The visitors look to be in a very strong position, with what remains of the match likely to be bowler-friendly conditions and with both Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Northeast at the crease when play resumes.

Tea will be taken at 16:10 as the ground staff have another sizeable clear-up ahead of them, with play set to resume at 16:45 provided there is no further rain before then.

WICKET - Jacks lbw b Snater 26published at 15:59 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 149-5

Will Jacks nudges Shane Snater past the slips for four, but next ball he is gone. That one kept a little low and struck him below mid-shin.

Essex won't care, though. Half of the Surrey order are gone and they have a great chance of a first-innings lead.

WICKET - Lammonby lbw b White 5published at 15:55 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 13-1 v Northamptonshire 255

The wait for a Somerset opening stand of 50 reaches seven innings.

Jack White angles one in to the left-hander and Tom Lammonby gets his footwork all wrong and has to go.

Australian Cameron Bancroft, making the final appearance of his deal with Somerset, is in at three.

Olly Stone is giving George Balderson a tough time in the last half-hour before tea at Trent Bridge.

He's consistently beaten the outside edge of the left-hander's bat in the past couple overs and potentially a chance went down at first slip, although it was very tight as to whether it carried.

  17. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 144-4

Will Jacks has made a really impressive start to this innings. He follows his two sixes off Simon Harmer with a well-placed cover drive for four in Jamie Porter's latest over.

He is 22 not out and Ben Foakes has 13.

That's not a good delivery by Simon Harmer, pulled down short and Will Jacks goes back onto his stumps and belts it over mid-wicket. Looks like the ball may have suffered some damage. Will the replacement bring a change of fortune for Harmer?
