    Worcs 264 v Sussex 340-7

Matthew Waite is now armed with the new ball, but Ollie Robinson takes two steps forward Bazball-style and crashes it over mid-wicket for four.

Two balls later, he finds the boundary again, clipping it away sweetly past mid-on.

  2. Postpublished at 17:07 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 178-7

Simon Harmer wheels in and Sean Abbott swishes it away over mid-wicket for four. Surrey need some runs from their tail to at least ensure that any first-innings deficit is not too big.

Harmer may not have been at his best in this innings, but he'll certainly be a threat in the fourth.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore joins Cameron Bancroft, who is 22 not out.

  4. Postpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 60-2 v Northamptonshire 255

    Beautiful.

Tom Abell times a shot through mid-wicket perfectly for four and Somerset move onto 60-2, still 195 behind Northants.

    Bright sunlight at Taunton.

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 243-4

Mohammad Abbas has figures of 1-23 from 20 overs. Half of them were maidens. He's some bowler.

Sam Hain has had to be incredibly patient today. He has faced 167 balls for his 84. What a useful knock it has already been. Bonus point number one is seven runs away.

WICKET Hudson-Prentice lbw Waite 54published at 17:02 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 330-7

A moment's relief for Worcestershire as Fynn Hudson-Prentice plays across the line of a straight one from Matthew Waite and is adjudged lbw.

Sussex are 66 to the good as Ollie Robinson joins Cheteshwar Pujara. The new ball is imminent.

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 326-6

Fynn Hudson-Prentice made 51 for Sussex against Worcestershire at Hove towards the end of last season and he now has another half-century, this time at New Road.

He reaches it from just 59 balls with a push for one off Joe Leach. Together, he and Cheteshwar Puajar have added 113 so far for the seventh wicket.

    Somerset 52-2 v Northamptonshire 255

Somerset pass fifty... only five scoring shots in the last four overs, but they have all been fours. Cameron Bancroft onto 18 with Tom Abell on 11.

  9. Pujara - the run plundererpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcestershire 264 v Sussex 323-6

    Ged Scott

Cheteshwar Pujara really has had an amaxing 13 months since coming to Sussex at the start of last season.

In 12 matches, he has now hit over 1,500 runs and is averaging over 100.

Of his eight hundreds, three have come in four matches this season - and even that is not quite up to last year's standard, when he got five in his first six games, three of which were doubles.

And he has an eight out of eight conversion rate from 50 to 100. Wow! Pujararama!!!

More to the point, his contribution in ths game, most notably in this unbroken century stand with Fynn Hudson-Prentice (47) is quickly taking Sussex out of sight.

The new ball is now just two overs away - and Worcestershire really need to take full advantage of it.

    WICKET - Foakes b S Cook 24published at 16:51 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 167-7

    Sam CookImage source, Rex

A huge breakthrough by Sam Cook.

Ben Foakes edges the second ball of a new over but it doesn't carry to the keeper and runs away for four.

The next one, though, bowls the England player off the inside edge as he tries to drive. A pretty loose shot and not typical of the man.

  11. Postpublished at 16:50 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Essex 314 v Surrey 163-6

The final session begins at Chelmsford. Jordan Clark is the new Surrey batter following Cameron Steel's dismissal by the last ball before tea.

He is content to block out Simon Harmer's three remaining deliveries.

  12. Postpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 232-4

Hampshire have taken the new ball and given it to Kyle Abbott.

Ed Barnard taps him away to move to 30 and take Warwickshire into the lead before a two from Sam Hain moves him onto 74.

    Essex 314 v Sussex 163-6 - at tea

    Paul Newton
    BBC Essex sport

After a heavy shower during lunch, the afternoon session ran from 2.30 to 4.25 and Surrey appeared to be easing themselves into a strong position passing 100 only one down.

But three wickets then fell for five runs. Dom Sibley and Jamie Smith were both caught behind off Doug Bracewell and when Jamie Porter replaced the New Zealander he trapped Ollie Pope lbw with his first ball.

Will Jacks joined Ben Foakes, the pair putting on 39 before Jacks was undone by a Snater delivery that shot along the ground. Both Pope and Jacks made 26 and Cameron Steel holed out at deep square leg off Harmer on the stroke of tea.

  14. Postpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 44-2 v Northamptonshire 255

Jordan Buckingham takes his first over in English cricket and his first ball is guided through the vacant gully area to the deep backward point boundary by his compatriot Cameron Bancroft, potentially on his last knock in English cricket for a while.

He replies with four dot balls but Bancroft has the final say with a lovely drive through the covers to finish the over.

They're also not resuming on time in Nottingham because of the weather.

The sun is out now though, so we await news of when/if the players will make it back out onto the field.

  16. Postpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 308-6

Sussex really are stepping on the gas now as Ben Gibbons' latest over costs the left-arm pace bowler five boundaries - three by Cheteshwar Pujara and two for Fynn Hudsdon-Prentice.

Skipper Pujara is 124 not out and FHP has 41.

Rain at HeadingleyImage source, Rex Features

With the covers on the field and the weather appearing to be set in for the day, it's an early finish at Headingley.

But day two, although truncated, has had its fair share of drama.

Michael Neser took a hat-trick as Yorkshire were bowled out for just 106. Jonny Bairstow was unbeaten on 20.

Then Glamorgan extended their lead to close to 200 when the rain came, and they'll be in a good position for victory should the weather hold during the weekend.

  18. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Derbypublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Derbyshire 299-4 v Leics 122

As we feared, the rain has arrived in Derby and there will be a delay to the restart after tea.

  19. Postpublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Somerset 29-2 v Northamptonshire 255

More kamizake running and Cameron Bancroft comes close to being run out for a second time, this time it's his own call. A full length dive to make his ground would likely have fallen short if the shy from Sam Whiteman at cover had hit the stumps.

They are making some poor decisions out there. A sign of pressure?

  20. 100 runs

for Cheteshwar Pujarapublished at 16:27 British Summer Time 5 May 2023

    Worcs 264 v Sussex 281-6

    Cheteshwar PujaraImage source, Getty Images

He made 115 against Durham, 151 against Gloucestershire and now has a century against Worcestershire. Cheteshwar Pujara is certainly 'seeing it well' at the moment.

He nudges Brett D'Oliveira round the corner for one to reach 100 off 138 balls and that is his eighth in 11 Championship games for Sussex.

The next over is bowled by Ben Gibbon and Pujara starts by cutting for four. Steve Smith was supposed to be the star attraction in this game - he isn't now.
