Well, it was a day that began with a lot of pomp and ceremony.

But it ended really as a bit of a damp squib,

Three games ruined completely by the weather - and all the other four affected in some considerable way.

A day of rain to launch the official start of a new reign.

Fitting really for King Charles III. As that was how his mum got started too on her big day. it rained on her parade too, 70 years ago. And the covers were not as good then.

The forecast for Sunday is apparently a bit nicer. Something a bit more regal.

Let us hope there will be more blue skies over and less need for covers.

  3. Stumps at Tauntonpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 66-1

Northants made a bright start to their second innings and dragged the deficit back into double figures but that stunning catch by Craig Overton in the penultimate over has changed the dynamic.

Ricardo Vasconcelos is a big scalp for Somerset, Hassaz Azad has already retired hurt and they have a nightwatchman in situ.

Jack Leach found some turn in the final half-hour too.

The deficit is still 91 for Northants after Tom Kohler-Cadmore's 130 and 89 from James Rew guided Somerset past 400, but, with a vastly better weather forecast on the final day, this one is going to be interesting.

Cancel your Sunday afternoon plans now!

    WICKET - Vasconcelos c Overton b Leach 26published at 18:28 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 63-1

Craig Overton that is an outrageous catch.

A huge breakthrough for the hosts, Jack Leach gets Ricardo Vasconcelos to play one off his pads and he feathers a nick to the left of Overton at leg slip who somehow dives and takes a one-handed catch.

My description cannot do it justice. Seek out footage online immediately.

Jordan Buckingham comes in as a nightwatchman and is welcomed with four fielders around the bat and a silly mid-on.

  5. Close of play in Nottinghampublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 219-4, Notts 249

Game over for the day at Trent Bridge.

    No more play today.

The Broad-Anderson derby could yet ignite into an exciting final-day contest but it is most likely to end up on this season‘s increasingly congested cutting room floor of games ruined by the weather.

Lancashire lead Nottinghamshire by 184 runs with six wickets remaining. Let us see what the elements offer tomorrow - and the two captains, Lancs old boy Steven Mullaney and Dane Vilas.

  6. Postpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 57-0

Sam Whiteman has caught Ricardo Vasconcelos up in the run-scoring stakes and then overtaken him. The skipper has 28. The former skipper has 24. Four fours apiece.

The Australian clips Kasey Aldridge down to fine leg for a four and then squirts one off the edge past fourth slip and to the fence to take the deficit down to 96.

  7. 50 runs

up for Northantspublished at 18:20 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 52-0

... in the 16th over. Sam Whiteman drives Jack Leach past mid-off, it gets hauled in by the rope but again they come back for three.

The deficit is down to 105, with three overs to come, the visitors would be very happy if it's into double-figures overnight.

  8. Bad light stops play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 219-4, Notts 249

Potentially 11 overs left tonight - and the light meters are out again.

    And off they come.

This one might be terminal too.

Lancashire lead Nottinghamshire by 184 runs with six wickets remaining - and the contest is still intrigungly poised, if either side were to gamble in the morning.

But the word from the locals already is that there will not be any more play at Trent Bridge tonight.

  9. Postpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 40-0

It took 17 deliveries for the first scoring shot off Peter Siddle, who has hit the ground running, Sam Whiteman cracking him into the deep to run three.

The deficit is down to 117.

  10. ouch!

Olly Stone injured againpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 213-4, Notts 249

Oh No! Another Olly Stone injury.

The England paceman has pulled up four balls into his next over.

The former Northamptonshire and Warwickshire fast bowler really has had the most appalling luck with injuries over the past few years, and he’s been led off here looking very unhappy.

Skipper Steven Mullaney completed the over for him.

Let us hope this is nothing serious - and just precautionary for Stone.

  11. Postpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 36-0

Just like that, skipper Tom Abell has brought on Jack Leach to replace Lewis Gregory, and popped in a short leg against Ricardo Vasconcelos.

  12. Postpublished at 17:53 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 36-0

Lewis Gregory coughs up six off his latest over to Sam Whiteman and I wonder if we might be about to see Jack Leach introduced for the 10th over.

Ricardo Vasconcelos and Sam Whiteman already look very settled on this placid track and a spot of spin might give them something else to think about.

  13. wicket

WICKET - Vilas lbw James 2published at 17:51 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 212-4, Notts 249

Lancashire have lost another wicket - their third since the five o‘clock restart

This time it is Dane Vilas as Lyndon James eans an lbw decison against the Lancs skipper.

A decision that sums up his luckless start to the season.

George Bell is the new man in, to join Steven Croft.

  14. Postpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 30-0

Peter Siddle is brought into the attack in the place of Craig Overton who has struggled for consistency, going for 20 off his three overs.

Siddle starts with a maiden over.

  15. Two games leftpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

Only two games left now then - at Taunton and Nottingham.

And a lot of overs still to be bowled, if the light holds in Somerset and the East Midlands.

  16. Play abandoned at Headingleypublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Yorks 0-0 (target 492) v Glamorgan

They won't be coming back out again tonight at Headingley, with umpires Muhammad Syed and Ian Blackwell ruling the pitch hasn't dried out sufficiently after that teatime downpour.

Yorkshire will have all day to survive tomorrow after Glamorgan declared and set them a notional target of 492.

Wonder if the visitors may end up regretting the decision not to pull out earlier?

  17. Postpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 26-0

Really regretting the Azad sad situation pun earlier now...

Hassan Azad has been forced to retire hurt as he can't seem to grip the handle of his bat properly. Can only imagine he was struck by a delivery.

Sam Whiteman is in at three and gets a couple of ripsnorting deliveries from Lewis Gregory to welcome him to the crease.

Ricardo Vasconcelos picks Craig Overton off for a couple of fours past mid-off from his latest over. He's onto a breezy 19.

  18. Covers coming off again at Trent Bridgepublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 205-3, Notts 249

After two ten-minute passages of play in which Lancashire lost both George Balderson and Josh Bohannon after a 188-run stand, it looks like there might be play here again after all.

The latest shower has passed, umpires Martin Saggers and Rob Bailey are of one mind - and Dane Vilas and Steven Croft are on their way to the middle.

The scoreboard still says 21 overs left in the day as Olly Stone steams in to resume the game again.

  19. Postpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Somerset 412 v Northamptonshire 255 & 16-0

Hassan Azad needs some attention on his left hand, so there's a meeting in the middle as he gets some treatment.

He has three from 12 balls so far with Ricardo Vasconcelos taking nine from nine.

  20. rain stops play

Bad light stops play at Trent Bridge - followed by rainpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2023

    Lancs 214 & 205-3, Notts 249

And off the players come again, to be passed along the way by the covers.

Cruel luck this on any crowd that had remained.

Cruel on George Balderson and Josh Bohannon.

But Notts must be laughing. So little time - and two such match turning wickets.
