  2. 'I hope Crawley is kicking himself'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Crawley wasn't at his best today. He played a few beautiful shots but he got some lucky edges too that could have easily been out.

I like watching him because he is positive but do I think he is going to be consistent in the Ashes? Absolutely not.

But do I think he can create an impact and some momentum, which is what they want from him - yes, I think he will do on a few occasions.

I hope that he is kicking himself not to have got that bigger score today but it is how he plays.

  3. 'We have to see things different with Crawley'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I have said for a while now about Zak Crawley that we have watched Test match cricket for a long time now and we have got to get our mindset away from the past, and that is that Test openers need to see off the new ball, be watchful outside off stump.

But this England side do not see Zak Crawley for that. They want him to create momentum, like a T20 style approach. If he's got five Tests against Australia, 10 innings, can he get England momentum in at least four?

That is what they want. I'll be sat up here seeing him get 50-odd against an Ireland team, and thinking he should have gone on to get 150 and play a bit more sensibly, but they don't think that way.

  4. 'I'm addicted to playing in this environment'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

More from Stuart Broad, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "As long as I am fit and fresh, I have done my job. I want to be ready to be called upon and whatever stage I am needed. It's one of those environments that if I don't play at Edgbaston for example, I might play a bigger part at The Oval.

"I don't really think about it [this being his last summer]. When I got left out of the Caribbean last year, I made a promise to myself to not look too far ahead and just give everything to the game I'm playing in the moment. I want to enjoy whatever result comes my way and that has really helped me because it keeps me fresh.

"I have bowled really well in the past year under Ben and I have done exactly what I want to do by taking important wickets. I am actually pretty addicted to playing in this environment and to this brand of cricket. It is just so fun, and our main objective is just to entertain everyone who is in the seats, on the radio or on the TV and that is so fun as a player because you are not thinking about the results, you are purely thinking about entertainment.

"I was thinking about batting tonight, I was ready to go from about six o'clock but Leachy was ready to go after that. He's called himself The Owl because he's supposedly more watchful than me.

"About tomorrow, your guess is as good as mine! You never know with Ben. I'll be happy as long as I get the first hour off, I think!"

  6. 'Back in the day it was all about economy rates'published at 18:59 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

England bowler Stuart Broad on BBC Test Match Special: "It was a nice feeling. I was happy with how we bowled as a group. Conditions were fantastic first thing this morning and that's what you want at Lord's because you have to make the new ball count.

"I have really focussed on improving my outswinger past the outside edge, but my favourite and more natural way to bowl is to get it nipping back in. I was happy with being able to bring the slips in to play a little more and I think that's going to be important throughout the summer.

"I certainly feel more comfortable bowling fuller and that just comes naturally when you know what the team wants. Back in the day, it was all about economy rates, so you had to bowl a little bit shorter to protect the runs, but now it's all about wickets so I am backing myself to pitch it up more to give us a chance of taking 10 wickets quicker.

"Within this changing room, one of Brendon's major mindsets is to just live where your feet are so not looking too far forward. The Ashes hasn't even been mentioned at all."

  7. Postpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

Zak Crawley always seems to come to the crease with debate over his place in the side and today was now different.

He scored 56 from 45 balls in a mixed bag of an innings.

The opener hit some glorious boundaries but also edged three drives dangerous close to his stumps.

He eventually fell caught and bowled to Fionn Hand.

  8. 'Stokes always makes you think'published at 18:52 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

When you're batting, you always want to find some rhythm and some routine. You want to get to 20 or 30 and see the same things, see the same fields.

But Ben Stokes doesn't allow you to do that. He is constantly tinkering with the field and moving things around. There may not always be a tactic or a reason but he is always making you think and playing on their minds, challenging you to do something different.

I think Australia will be stubborn and they will just bat time, they won't be impacted by England's approach, but it will be interesting to see how Stokes' captaincy can impact the likes of Smith and Labuschagne, who like to get into their bubble and block things out.

  9. Debut 'very special' - England's Tonguepublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

England bowler Josh Tongue speaking to Sky Sports after taking 0-40 on debut: "It was a very special day, making your debut at Lord's it was just an amazing feeling. I've never played here before but I'd obviously been here to watch cricket.

"There was no better feeling than Jimmy Anderson giving me my Test cap and having all my family here was a special feeling. Jimmy just said you're here for a reason, go and nejoy it.

"I had some nerves but bowling a maiden was nice. after the first ball I just got into my work.

"I thought I started my spell quite well and I was a bit unlucky with some plays and misses, but I was happy with what I did.

"As a bowling attack you've got to be different so with my extra pace, to make the batter just be a bit doubtful in their foot movement, we went shorter. Whatever Stokesy wanted me to do I will just say 'definitely'. I have done similar for Worcestershire.

"We are very happy. It was a great day all round."

  10. 'England want to win in two days'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Michael Vaughan
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

You can see England's confidence. They want to do things that no other team has done and they want to win in two days here.

When I watch them, I just think "Where do you bowl?" Yes, Ireland's bowling attack isn't as strong but they have done it against some really strong bowlers in New Zealand and against South Africa.

Ben Stokes is a very smart cricketer. I think he's smarter than we ever considered him to be. He tempts the batters with his fields, always aggressive, and he gives Jack Leach the opportunity to sneak a couple of wickets which he did today.

  11. Postpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

By the time England came out to bat the sun was out and, with a lot of help from some poor Ireland bowling, they took full advantage.

They have scored at more than six runs per over to reached 152-1 at the close.

There have been 24 fours in 25 overs.

  12. 'Leach wickets will frustrate Ireland'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The wickets to Jack Leach are the ones that Ireland will be frustrated with. If Stuart Broad takes five against you, that can happen because he is that world class.

But the pitch was not turning.

Ireland needed a bit of luck, because we all know that England are a much stronger side, and they didn't get it.

  13. 'A difficult evening in the Ireland camp'published at 18:39 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

    Niall O'Brien
Former Ireland wicketkeeper on Test Match Special

I expect it is going to be a difficult evening in the Ireland camp. They will be disappointed, especially the batters, because it was a bit tough this morning under the clouds but it was not difficult for batting.

It is a good pitch. When they look at their dismissals, they will know they have gifted four of five dismissals away.

That's not taking anything away from Stuart Broad, and England have set a marker for the summer there.

  14. Postpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

The day couldn't have gone much better for England.

Ben Stokes won the toss under cloudy skies this morning and they bowled Ireland out for 172.

Stuart Broad was, once again, superb.

He took 5-51 - his 20th five-wicket haul in Tests - while Jack Leach claimed three wickets and Matthew Potts two.

I suspect Ireland have a slight feeling of foreboding about what is coming their way tomorrow. England have got quite the platform to absolutely launch.

Ollie Pope is such a confident young man these days. He was so nervous at the beginning of his career but he has changed so much. You can see him wanting to score from every ball.
