With number 10 at the other end, Curtis Campher must have been thinking it was time for him to get a move on.

Jack Leach has bowled really well today. That was a bit slower, a bit of a teaser and it worked.

We were just saying how Campher had played with so much control!

  3. wicket

    Campher b Leach 33 (Ire 172-9)

Nine down! Curtis Campher falls to a hideous swipe across the line as he tried to smack Jack Leach into orbit.

    That's Leach's third wicket.

That is Stuart Broad's 20th five-wicket haul in Tests. 14 of them have come in England, and three at Lord's.

He got the top four batters out today, and that is the fourth time he has done that in his career.

It's also Broad first five-wicket haul at Lord's since 2013, way back in the pre-bandana days.

    Stephan Shemilt

This is Stuart Broad's first five-wicket haul in a home Test for three years.

Stuart Broad is giving the selectors a question. It is hard to leave him out of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston if he takes seven wickets here.

  8. Ire 169-8published at 54 overs

Fionn Hand emerges on debut. He defends his first ball befiore Broad waves his hat to the crowd as they applaud.

How many more could he get today - and in his career? He has 581 to his name now.

Stuart Broad, starts what could possibly be his last summer, with another five-wicket haul and in the best possible way. It is an excellent start for Broad.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 53.5 overs

    Broad b Adair 14 (Ire 169-8)

    Five wickets for Stuart Broad!

He swings one back between Mark Adair's bat and pad and onto the top of off stump. That's a perfect delivery.

You can just never count Broad out.

  11. Ire 165-7published at 53 overs

    Campher 32, Adair 10

After a set from Stuart Broad it's over to Jack Leach and there's a big appeal for lbw at the end of it. Leach initially sounded confident but then turned with a shrug, waving his arm to suggest the ball was going down to miss leg.

I don't want to get grumpy on the first day of the summer but Ireland's classic sweaters are excellent. The clash with the bright white shirts less so.

I can see players on the Lord's outfield.

    We're good to go again.

England have to be patient. Four days is still a long time. We have seen five-day Tests being done in two days.

We know Ben Stokes manoeuvres his chess pieces like never before. In that last over he went from four slips to the short-ball tactic.

  15. Postpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 1 June 2023

There were three wickets in that session, one each for Broad, Leach and Potts.

I'm not sure about that but thank you anyway.

Ireland have dug in pretty well from 19-3.

England have bowled nicely, but fair play to Ireland for keeping them out there.

Campher will be the key man after the break.

  20. Tea - Ire 162-7published at 51 overs

    Campher 32, Adair 8

A handy knock from Curtis Campher keeps Ireland in it as the players head off for tea, with a wicket each for Potts, Broad and Leach in that afternoon session.

It's been what I guess you'd call "classic" Test cricket since lunch, which we've not really been used to in recent times.
