  1. wicket

WICKET Burns lbw b Hogan 14published at 17:43 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey 25-1 v Kent 278

    What can't the man do?

Michael Hogan angles one in which pins Rory Burns in his crease after he plays across the line and misses.

Easy decision for umpire Nigel Llong.

Ollie Pope joins Dom Sibley. He's apparently quite handy at the Oval, maybe you've heard.

  2. wicket

WICKET De Leede st Bracey b Gohar 65published at 17:41 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucs v Durham 338-6

A touch of over confidence, perhaps? Bas de Leede tries to swipe Zafar Gohar's spin to leg, but the ball turns and James Bracey completes a smart stumping.

De Leede and Graham Clark - who is 81 not out - added 124, a club record for the sixth wicket against Gloucestershire.

  3. wicket

WICKET Rossington lbw Hutton 35published at 17:39 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 288-7

Brett Hutton has his third wicket of the innings for Notts as Adam Rossington is given out leg-before despite taking a couple of steps out of his crease. Despite the distance between his front pad and the stumps, that did look very straight. Shane Snater is in at nine.

  4. Postpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 288-6

A leg-stump half-volley by Stuart Broad is put away unerringly for four by Doug Bracewell. The New Zealander is six not out and Adam Rossington has 35 - 11 more to be bowled.

  5. Postpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey 21-0 v Kent 278

Just two runs came from Michael Hogan's first 15 deliveries but the all-rounder (!?) sends one down leg side and Rory Burns tickles it nicely to the ropes to move to 14 from 18 balls.

  6. Postpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 282-6

Brett Hutton gives Adam Rossington too much room and he square cuts nicely for four to move to 33 not out.

A single follows and he will keep the strike, with Stuart Broad to come in again at the other end.

  7. 100 runs

partnership for Durhampublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucs v Durham 329-5

Graham Clark drives Ajeet Singh Dale for four to bring up a century stand with Bas de Leede and flicks the next one to the rope at mid-wicket.

Frustrated, Dale bangs it in half-way down and Clark pulls it for his third successive boundary. There is one to third man for Bas de Leede from the fifth delivery as the over costs Gloucestershire 18.

  8. Postpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 288-6 v Northamptonshire

Liam Dawson is unbeaten on 33 with Keith Barker on six.

There are still 10 overs scheduled this evening, though with the cloud cover and afternoon light failing I can't promise you we get them all in at the Ageas. The floodlights have been on for a while already.

  9. wicket

    WICKET Kohler-Cadmore b Murtagh 68published at 17:32 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 293-5

    Six. Six. Gone!

First ball of Tim Murtagh's over - Tom Kohler-Cadmore with a full swing to send it into the Grand Stand.

Second ball - Kohler-Cadmore down on one knee and that's six more over midwicket, not far from where the previous ball went.

    Third ball - out!

The batter goes for a repeat and gets in a tangle and sees his bails dislodged. The end of a fine 59-ball knock, full of power and big shots - seven fours and four sixes.

  10. Steve Smith effectpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex 152-4 v Glamorgan 123

The commentators on BBC Radio Sussex are talking about the 'Steve Smith effect' in and around the Sussex dressing room.

What an opportunity for 19-year-old James Coles to be out in the middle with him.

And as he hits successive fours, one has more than a hint of Smith as he punches it through the offside.

  11. Postpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 60-9 v Leics 173

It won't be long, judging by that shot from Jack Brooks.

The Worcestershire tail-ender swishes at a ball from Wiaan Mulder and sends it steepling over the covers for four.

Not where he intended it, but they all count.

  12. 50 runs

partnershippublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 281-4

Middlesex have the new ball in their hands, but a leg bye allows James Rew and Tom Kohler-Cadmore to bring up their 50 partnership.

There is probably an hour's cricket left today and they could push the Somerset score up towards 350 if they remain together.

  13. 50 runs

for Bas de Leedepublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucs v Durham 310-5

He has two 50s in one-dayers and four in T20 internationals but that is still a big moment for Dutch all-rounder Bas de Leede, who reaches only his second first-class half-century off 106 balls by steering Ajeet Singh Dale through mid-wicket for two.

Graham Clarke is 67 not out at the other end.

  14. Postpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey 9-0 v Kent 278

Poor old Michael Hogan is going to need a hot bath and an early night tonight.

Not only does he spend an hour and four minutes at the crease as last man, he's also thrown the new ball to open the bowling with Wes Agar. Just the one off his first over.

The man is 42 later this month for crying out loud.

  15. wicket

WICKET Leach c Scriven b Mulder 4published at 17:23 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 52-9 v Leics 173

I suppose he can't be blamed in the circumstances but that was a very ambitious shot by Joe Leach.

The ball from Wiaan Mulder wasn't anywhere close to half-volley length and he lobs a catch to cover.

  16. wicket

WICKET Holland lbw b Buckingham 4published at 17:21 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 281-6 v Northamptonshire

Another breakthrough for Northants. Jordan Buckingham gets the new ball to keep low, skid through and thump Ian Holland on the back pad. He's plum lbw.

Keith Barker strides out to join Liam Dawson.

  17. wicket

WICKET Harmer lbw Broad 46published at 17:20 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 270-6

The new ball does the trick for Notts as Stuart Broad removes Simon Harmer after his previous ball was edge through the slips for four.

Harmer put on 75 with Adam Rossington, who has now been joined by Doug Bracewell.

  18. Postpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 264-5

The new ball has been taken by Notts.

Stuart Broad will bowl to Simon Harmer and there will be 15 more to come in the day's play after this one.

  19. wicket

WICKET Haines c Neser b McIlroy 58published at 17:16 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex 131-4 v Glamorgan 123

No sooner does Tom Haines bring up a 50-partnership with Steve Smith, then he is on his way.

Jamie McIlroy finds a little bit of extra bounce to surprise the opener, it finds his edge and ends up in the hands of Michael Neser at first slip.

A useful breakthrough for Glamorgan and McIlroy after Haines' big shots at the start of the innings.

Measured approach works for Clarkpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucs v Durham 304-5

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Durham chose to bat this morning and gave themselves a decent start before batsmen started finding ways of getting themselves out through a series of unenforced errors.

At 214-5, I started to wonder if they were leaving too many runs out in the middle on what looked like a decent track. Since then Graham Clark has reached his first half century of the season and has put on 89 runs with Bas de Leede.

Clark's 50 was really measured. It came in a patient 109 deliveries and included only four fours and a six. He's 30 but this is only his 43rd first- class match. He's been seen as a white ball specialist in recent seasons.

De Leede is playing in his second County Championship match and has 47. The new ball has just been taken.
