    Surrey 8-0 v Kent 278

First ball of the reply comes from Wes Agar, a leg-stump half-volley which Rory Burns cracks away square for four runs.

Burns opens the face to a shorter third ball and glances an edge, we'll call it deliberately, past the slips for another boundary.

    Surrey are off and running...

  2. 50 runs

for Tom Kohler-Cadmorepublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 269-4

Ethan Bamber gifts Tom Kohler-Cadmore a full toss which the batter gets away down to the legside boundary.

It's a run-a-ball half-century for the Somerset number five, who will be thrilled with his first 50 since switching from Yorkshire in the close season.

  3. for Chris Wrightpublished at 17:12 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 48-8 v Leics 173

Chris Wright completes the 19th five-for of his career as he has Adam Finch lbw for one at New Road.

We doubt that loan signing Jack Brooks imagined walking out to bet for Worcestershire for the first time with the score 48-8 - not unless he has an especially active imagination.

  4. Postpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 259-5

Calvin Harrison is into his second over for Notts.

It only costs him two runs but Essex have already earned their first batting point, with two more overs to go before the new ball is due.

    Sussex 127-3 v Glamorgan

Steve Smith has just played out 17 successive dot balls as he remains on 28 not out.

Coming off 71 balls, he won't be accused of playing Bazball cricket but he will play at his own tempo.

It's served him pretty well on the way to 8,792 Test match runs, however.

  6. 50 runs

for Graham Clarkpublished at 17:04 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Gloucs v Durham 284-5

That's wide of leg stump from Zafar Gohar and Graham Clark sweeps for four to reach 50 off 109 balls for Durham.

He'll be relieved after being dismissed twice in the 40s earlier in the season and he and Bas de Leede have now added 69.

  7. wicket

WICKET Hogan c Foakes b Lawes 43published at 17:03 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 278

The dream dies. Kent have added 82 runs for the last wicket but Michael Hogan edges Tom Lawes behind to bring the innings to a close.

He made 43 from 48 with his ninth four coming from the penultimate delivery.

Joey Evison is stranded on 77 from 105 balls with nine fours and two sixes.

He was the bedrock of an astonishing recovery from 118-7 in the 41st over to 278 just 32 overs later.

Lawes joins Jordan Clark and Dan Worrall with three scalps apiece.

  8. First batting pointpublished at 17:02 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 250-4

Division One's leading run scorer, James Rew, picks up his second run of the innings out to midwicket and that gets Somerset's first batting point.

They have 34 more overs to chase up to four more.

Middlesex already have one bowling point.

  9. wicket

WICKET Vince c Vasconcelos b Keogh 95published at 17:01 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 268-5 v Northamptonshire

A century has felt inevitable since about 20 minutes after he first strode out but James Vince has fallen short of his 29th first-class century after edging Rob Keogh to the keeper.

He looks furious. It has been a walk in the park for him, in truth, but he's fallen short of a second century against Northants in a month.

Ian Holland comes in to join Liam Dawson.

  10. wicket

WICKET Waite c Scriven b Davey 0published at 17:00 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 46-7 v Leics 173

The Worcestershire collapse continues as Matthew Waite clips the ball to Tom Scriven at mid-wicket.

Just to update you on our previous post, Worcestershire's second lowest score against Leicestershire was 57 at Loughborough in 1963, but once again the Foxes didn't need to take all 10 as Jack Flavell retired hurt.

  11. 6 runs

Postpublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 249-4

One to keep the spectators in the Grand Stand interested as Tom Kohler-Cadmore hooks one over the ropes into the crowd at the short boundary off Ethan Bamber.

Two balls later, he guides one down to a vacant area for third.

Kohler-Cadmore is always dangerous if he gets into his groove.

  12. 50 runs

partnership for Essexpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 247-5

Adam Rossington pulls Lyndon James away uppishly for four as he and Simon Harmer post a half-century stand from 94 balls.

Having fought back so well during the afternoon, Notts are now looking to the new ball, which is only six overs away.

  13. Sussex leadpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Sussex 125-3 v Glamorgan 123

Steve Smith punches one down the ground for a couple off Timm van der Gugten to bring up his county's lead.

Shortly before, he played a gorgeous shot for four just behind point for four.

He is starting to get into the groove as he is now 28 not out.

  14. Postpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 263-4 v Northamptonshire

The Ageas is shrouded in a blanket of cloud and is looking pretty gloomy after the bright day thus far.

No threat of weather but the lights might be needed at some stage with another 18 overs on the slate for today.

Two balls until the new ball can be taken.

  15. wicket

WICKET Pollock c Ackermann b Wright 30published at 16:51 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 45-6 v Leics 173

It is becoming a procession at New Road.

After racing to 30 from 24 balls, Ed Pollock is caught low down at second slip by Colin Ackermann and that's four scalps for Chris Wright.

If there is any good news for Worcerstershire, perhaps it is that they have already surpassed their lowest total against the Foxes - 40 on this same ground in 1971.

That doesn't really count, though, as they only lost eight wickets because Ron Headley and David Stewart were unable to bat.

  16. wicket

    WICKET D'Oliveira c Handscomb b Davey 6published at 16:49 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Worcs 45-5 v Leics 173

Home skipper Brett D'Oliveira pushes a long way forward in orthodox defensive mode, but the ball does enough to find the edge and Peter Handscomb does the rest.

Two wickets for Josh Davey on his Leicestershire debut.

  17. Postpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Notts v Essex 237-4

Simon Harmer doesn't get anywhere near the pitch of the ball from spinner Liam Patterson-White but a thick edge flies to third man for four. He collects another boundary at the start of the next, from Lyndon James, clipped nicely to square leg, and it looks like Adam Rossington is content to play the supporting role for the moment.

  18. wicket

    WICKET Bartlett c Roland-Jones b Higgins 121published at 16:46 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Middlesex v Somerset 231-4

George Bartlett's fine innings is over.

He tries a lofted shot off Ryan Higgins but running back from mid-on, captain Toby Roland-Jones takes a good catch.

Still a deserved round of applause from a knowledgeable Lord's crowd, having come in at 10-2 this morning.

Bartlett's score came off 214 balls with 21 fours in almost four-and-half hours at the crease.

  19. 250 runs

up for Hampshirepublished at 16:45 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Hampshire 256-4 v Northamptonshire

Liam Dawson guides Alex Russell away for a single to bring up Hampshire's eighth batting bonus point of the season.

The following ball sees James Vince move onto 83 with a punch through the covers for four.

Five overs away from the new ball, is that Northants' best hope of a breakthrough?

  20. Tea at the Ovalpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 18 May 2023

    Surrey v Kent 271-9

An astonishing session comes to a close.

That's now 75 unbroken for the last wicket at tea, delayed by the extra 30 minutes, of course.

No11 Michael Hogan has 39 from 45 balls and Joey Evison 76 from 105.

They are 29 away from a second batting point, a total which seemed unthinkable at 118-7, it must be said.

Dan Worrall and Jordan Clark have three wickets apiece with Tom Lawes having two but Surrey's stellar lineup have had no answer to the flurry of late afternoon boundaries.

A rousing reception from the crowd as the players head off for a very cold tea.
