Well that sure was a hot one!

Comfortably the most times any of the three of us have ever written the word "Kookaburra" in one day.

The Kook has taken 83 wickets (including Sir Alastair Cook) but there have also been seven centurions.

Even Steven then. Too soon to make any snap assessments.

If you fancy more of the same tomorrow, join us at about a quarter to 11.

    Lancashire 274, Surrey 70-4

    Huge late blow for Lancashire.

Ben Foakes plays on to Jack Blatherwick from the first ball - and that is the close of play for the day.

The 83rd and last scalp of the day for the Kookaburra.

  4. One over left . . .published at 18:58 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

  5. dropped catch

Smith dropped at slip on 23published at 18:55 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Lancashire 274, Surrey 67-3

Lancashire miss out on a fourth wicket tonight as Jamie Smith is put down at slip by Daryl Mitchell.

The New Zealand Test man that is.

By his standards, a bad miss.

THE Daryl Mitchell, the Worcestershire one would have had that. Even now!

  6. 50 runs

50 up for Surreypublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Lancashire 274, Surrey 56-3 (16 overs)

Jack Blatherwick also goes for eight off his first over.

    The pressure has been relieved.

Surrey have four overs left to face.

  7. Five overs left for Surreypublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Lancashire 274, Surrey 48-3

Five overs left for Surrey to avoid losing another wicket this evening.

Lancashire duo Will Williams and Tom Bailey have made a great start with seven superb overs each, taking three early wickets, but the first change did not go well as George Balderson went for eight runs off his first.

Jack Blatherwick hoping for a bit better.

  8. Stumps at Worcesterpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

Worcestershire 237 v Derbyshire 32-2 (Derbyshire trail by 205 runs)

A wicket with the final ball of the day swings the balance in Worcestershire's favour.

Dillon Pennington finds the edge of Luis Reece's bat with Ed Pollock taking the catch.

Navdeep Saini earlier bowled Harry Came as Derbyshire began their response to the hosts' 237.

  9. Close of play at Leicesterpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Leicestershire v Durham 422-4

The runaway Division Two leaders have piled up the runs against third-placed Leicestershire.

Two runs from the final ball of the day took Ollie Robinson (111) and Graham Clark (85) to an unbroken 201-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

It built on earlier big scores from openers Alex Lees (101) and Michael Jones (78) and crushed the hope that Leicestershire had begun to build after pegging back Durham from 145-0 to 221-4.

  10. Close of play in Cardiffpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Glamorgan 242, Sussex 65-1 (22 overs)

All over for the day at Sophia Gardens, with Tom Clark closing on 32 and Tom Alsop on 27, following the early loss of Tom Haines.

So Sussex, the only team in the County Championship with a Tom-Tom-Tom top three, have reduced the deficit to Glamorgan to 177.

  11. Close of play at Northamptonpublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

Northamptonshire 237 v Kent 110-1 (Kent trail by 127 runs)

A partnership worth more than 100 from Tawanda Muyeye and Daniel Bell-Drummond sees Kent to the close of play nicely.

Muyeye is unbeaten on 58 and Bell-Drummond finishes the day two runs short of a half-century.

Ben Compton was the only Kent wicket to fall - bowled by Ben Sanderson in the fourth over.

Earlier, Rob Keogh batted brilliantly but fell agonisingly three runs short of a century as the hosts were bowled out for 237.

  12. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Yorkshire 393-6 v Gloucestershire

It’s been a long day for the Gloucestershire bowlers after visiting skipper Graeme van Buuren lost the toss.

Yorkshire looked shaky at 33-2, but Fin Bean (114), George Hill (101) and Jonathan Tattersall (79) have put them in a commanding position at stumps on day one.

How many more can Yorkshire rack up?

And how much of a toll has a long sapping day in the field taken on the visitors before their first innings?

  13. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Essex 391-7 v Warwickshire

Fine day for Essex at Chelmsford.

Hot, tiring day for the Warwickshire bowlers.

Centuries for Dan Lawrence and Tom Westley.

Some ugly figures for the bowlers.

But England spinner Dom Bess, on his Bears debut on loan from Yorkshjre, and Jake Lintotto, on only his second red-ball start at the age of 30, did at least each take a couple of wickets.

  14. Stumps at Southamptonpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Hampshire 284-4 v Middlesex

Nick Gubbins can't quite reach a century this evening, he is on 98 not out at the close.

Liam Dawson did manage to grab a century and he will begin tomorrow morning looking to add to his 111.

Those two have firmly moved the game in Hampshire's favour as they day has worn on.

When Ben Brown was out in the 34th over, the hosts were 94-4, and since then they have added almost 200 runs without losing another batter.

Middlesex's Josh de Caires was kept busy today - he bowled 27 overs - taking 2-93.

  15. wicket

    WICKET - Latham c Jennings b Bailey 10published at 18:21 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Lancashire 274, Surrey 27-3

Excellent stuff from Tom Bailey as he comes in round-the-wicket and has New Zealand Test player Tom Latham well caught at second slip.

Ben Foakes is the new man in.

Still nine overs to come after this. Not time for a nightwatchman yet.

  16. Postpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Yorkshire 388-6 v Gloucestershire

Five overs have been lost to that rain break so we'll have 14 more balls at Headingley this evening.

  17. 50 runs

for Tawanda Muyeyepublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Northamptonshire 237 v Kent 100-1

A four and six in consecutive balls take Tawanda Muyeye over a half-century.

The runs also mean Kent have reached 100 in response to Northants' first-innings score.

Daniel Bell-Drummond is on 43 not out at the other end with about three overs left.

  18. More to come at Headingley?published at 18:16 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Yorkshire 388-6 v Gloucestershire

The covers are coming off at Headingley and we may yet get some more play.

There were 7.2 overs remaining when the rains came, but we may lose some overs if the players get out.

  19. wicket

    WICKET - Harmer c Burgess b Lintott 30published at 18:14 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Essex 373-7 (92.5 overs) v Warwickshire.

Jake Lintott, like Dom Bess, also picks up a second wicket to help massage some expensive bowling figures.

Simon Harmer is seventh man out, caught at the wicket.

  20. Robinson's fine season continuespublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 25 June 2023

    Durham 401-4 v Leicestershire

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Ollie Robinson has been a joy to watch this season following his move from Kent.

A few weeks ago he scored three T20 Blast half-centuries in a row.

He's already scored two centuries and three half-centuries in the County Championship in the run up to this and has today notched his third ton of the season.

He's also put on a partnership of more than 180 with Graham Clark, who has 74 and is enjoying a renaissance after it looked like his first-class career was over under the previous coach.

Robinson got there in 143 balls and hit 11 fours. It was a timely intervention after Durham found themselves on 221-4 earlier on what is a great batting track.

It's been tough going for the bowlers in the heat, as they try to deal with the vagaries of the Kookaburra ball, which seems to soften quicker than a Dukes ball, despite that company's recent travails.

The seam is also less pronounced. A good toss to win.
