That's your lot, folks. Not quite as much cricket as we'd have liked today but the rain was always going to play a part in this series at some stage.

Thanks for all your texts and tweets to keep us going during those rain delays. They were great, even if I am a bit Star Wars-ed out now!

Those two wickets in the gloom leave England 28-2, leading by 35, so perhaps Australia with the upper-hand going into day four?

We'll be back bright and early tomorrow - 08:00 BST to be precise - with Test Match Special starting at 10:00 BST on Radio 5 Sports Extra. Join us then!

  2. 'Anything over 300, we're in the game'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

England bowler Ollie Robinson, speaking to Test Match Special...

On the yorker to get Khawaja: "Trying to get him to play shots he’s not comfortable with. Before the ball, [Ben Stokes] said go back to Rawalpindi and Pakistan and the umbrella field.

"I've been practising a bit of T20 recently, went to the yorker and it came off."

Difficulties of the yorker: "You have to be ready for all formats and it was great that it came off in Test cricket."

On England's second innings: "It was sort of the first time the pitch came out a little bit in three days. The lights and overhead gave it a bit of nip and carry. If we carried on batting, it might have been a slightly different approach, but still positive."

On what score England need: "I think anything over 300, we are right in the game."

On Moeen Ali's finger: "I haven’t actually seen it, by all accounts it will be fine. Sometimes you get little niggles and tears in the skin but you have to get on with it."

On the rest of the match: "Hopefully we can get the ball moving and bat all day tomorrow."

  3. How's stat?!published at 18:28 British Summer Time 18 June 2023

    • Australia lost their last four wickets for 14 runs. It was a stark contrast to the equivalent innings at Edgbaston in 2019, when they went from 112-7 to 284 all out, thanks to Peter Siddle's 44 at number 10.
    • Zak Crawley was dismissed playing a defensive shot for the 28th time in his Test career, meaning he has been dismissed once every 32 balls he's defended. That is the lowest balls per dismissal for defensive shots for any player in the CricViz database (min. 700 balls defended).
    • Ollie Pope has been much less assured for England in the second innings of Tests. He averages 47.91 in the first innings of matches, compared to just 16.66 in the second innings.

The rain stopped long enough to allow roughly three overs of play.

But with conditions ideal for bowling, Australia took their opportunity and dismissed both England openers.

It was a wicket each for Pat Cummins and Scott Boland in the gloom prior to another downpour...

England had a seven-run lead on first innings and the openers started brightly before the rain came in...

Australia then frustrated England for a while with Usman Khawaja and Pat Cummins sharing a handy seventh-wicket partnership.

Ollie Robinson broke that by bowling Khawaja with a superb yorker and England quickly mopped up the tail.

In total they took four wickets for 14 runs in 21 balls.

After all that, day three has come to a close. It was severely shortened due to the rain but we still had plenty of action.

Jimmy Anderson got England up and running by bowling Alex Carey for 66...

The first inspection was at 5pm, it's now 6:15pm. It's now been called off. For England, it is immense relief that they don't have to go back out in these conditions.

The umpires have split, one heading to each dressing room. Ben Stokes asks what is happening and Joe Root appears to take off his pads.

Yep, there's the confirmation. It's been dragged out but we are done for the day.

England will be happy enough with the outcome. They'll be less happy at having to wait around for quite as long as they did before the decision was made.

I would not be relaxed at this situation, I would be so cross. Really cross. It's almost too late now, the message needed to go out almost two hours ago.

The England team are watching on from the balcony, the covers are coming off and Marais Erasmus has just made a gesture up to the dressing rooms.

What that gesture means is anyone's guess though.

Australia are also watching on. Mitch Marsh is sporting a pairs of Crocs...

My worry for England would be if they go too hard too soon, they could find themselves four done very quickly.

Bazball needs some sleep, a kip and to come back tomorrow!

We're looking at it and thinking 40 minutes, they need to survive. They are looking at it and thinking 40 minutes, that could be 70 runs. That's Bazball!

The umpires are looking rather thoughtful there, if anything is to go by from the last one, we won't get a decision straight away.

It sounds like the light won't be an issue then. It'll come down to the state of the outfield and whether we get anymore rain.
